Stayed for 2 weeks last September and had a good time. Returned for 5 nights this time. Still good but a little more jaded this time. Not sure if it was because the guests were different or the weather, or what it was, but definitely not a good as previously, a very different feel this time. The fact that they seemed to allow people to smoke more was an issue as well. Also was not great that we asked for our bags to be brought down from our room after check out in time to meet our driver and an hour later, nothing had happened so my partner went and did it himself, in the heat and having to haul them up and down an awful lot of stairs.

Room Tip: Away from lobby 1 although the whole hotel is fairly noisey.

We had the pleasure of travelling with another couple to Panama for a two week split all-inclusive between the Royal Decameron and the Hard Rock Hotel in Panama City from Feb. 26 - Mar. 12, 2013.

Where to begin ... first of all - we'd like to reiterate that vacations are definitely what you make of them and that no matter what reviews you have read, it's your attitude and willingness to have a great time that counts. And we definitely had a great time! Having been to several all-inclusives in a variety of countries, our expectations were mediocre - and we are so pleased to report that this resort is so much more than mediocre. It is truly a gem.

Yes, the bus ride from the airport in Panama City to the Royal Decameron is long and somewhat boring, but we knew this and were prepared - and that's definitely not the fault of the resort. We do wonder how the new airport, when it opens, will impact the resort.

It was dark when we did arrive, which was a bit of a disappointment only because we wanted to explore our surroundings as quickly as possible. The check-in was very fast and efficient and we were thoroughly pleased with our rooms (2nd and 3rd floor) and their placement. Block 13 beachfront is a fabulous place to hang out. We were right at ocean level with pools directly in front of us, buffets and bars to the left and right, and the ocean in front of the pools. What more could we have asked for? After a few days of very hot weather, we realized that there was no better place to be than right by the water - whether pool or ocean. Speaking of the ocean - it is not the calm blue waters one might be used to and expect, but again - not the fault of the resort.

The beach is long and wide and there are many, many places to hang out - in the shade or in the sun - whatever your preference. We never had any difficulties obtaining chairs at any time of the day. The pools and meandering waterways were always a treat to walk through or lounge in. The amount of water on this resort is astounding.

For such a big resort, we found all the buffets and a la cartes to be very good - some nights may have been better than others, but there was always something to eat. There was always a plethera to choose from - whether at breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Of course it can get a little repetitive, but that comes with the territory. We always looked forward to and enjoyed the wonderful array of fruits and breads at each meal, as well as the desserts. There were times when the main items could have been hotter, but other than that - no real complaints. The buffet staff always seemed to be working and busy and they could have been more attentive to guests, but we had no trouble flagging them down when we needed them. They were always courteous and polite to us when we did. We enjoyed many of the a la cartes, and had no difficulties in booking them at all.

The bars were well tended and we had no trouble getting drinks no matter which bar we bellied up to. In fact, even though it's such a big resort, we were amazed at how many bartenders remembered our drink of choice! Hats off to them for making us feel so special. We never found the drinks to be watered down and thought that all bartenders were quite willing to give us whatever we asked for. Even when language was a barrier - we always got our point across. We did have some difficulty in remembering or knowing which bars were open when, but all it took was a little jaunt in another direction to find one that was open. It was also nice to see that all the bars and restaurants had their floors cleaned regularly, as well as the pool areas.

Our rooms was cleaned early every day with a fresh supply of towels, water, etc. We had no difficulties with our room. Sure, it may have been nice to have a few extra touches on occasion (flowers, etc.), but definitely not required or necessary. Also, we never experienced any issues with noise, etc. from other rooms during our stay.

The grounds, as expansive as they are, are immaculately kept. The pools are cleaned regularly and the sprinklers kept the grass, shrubbery, and trees watered continuously. It was a treat to walk up and down several of the paths and see the different areas that included hidden pools and bars and "wildlife" like the iguanas and peacocks.

If you get restless and bored at the resort, there are a few things that you can do to break up your day. We had appetizers at Woody's one afternoon, walked into Farallon on another, and also took a stroll through Noriega's abandoned beach house. If interested, there is also a Casino and Hard Rock store within walking distance. There are many activities occuring on the beach or by the pools daily as well.

We were saddened to leave and head to Panama City after our 11 nights. We booked the partial canal tour on the day of departure so that we only had one ride back into the city. It worked out wonderfully and we would recommend that to anyone doing a split vacation. The tour was fabulous and the Hard Rock was great. We loved our few days in the City and were very happy to see the different sides of Panama - from the resort, to the canal to Old Panama and New.

All in all, we were pleasantly surprised by our experience at the Royal Decameron and the Hard Rock. We have no negative comments to make and would definitely head back in that direction as there is so much more to discover and enjoy!

Room Tip: While there are many amenities spread out over the entire resort area, the beachfront rooms are clos...

My mother and I stayed at the Royal Decameron Panama all-inclusive for 10 nights. I have stayed at many other all inclusive resorts also rated as four stars, and compared to those, this resort is a tad bit over rated.

The resort layout, landscaping and multiple pools were very beautiful. All of the grounds were always clean and well maintained and the pools were always clean. They closed the beach to swimmers in late afternoon while the sun was up (we were told for safety reasons) but the pool closest to the disco was open late for the evening swimmers. Also, there is a lot of wildlife to observe. Especially iguanas running all over the place which did make things a tad more entertaining.

The overall quality of food was not very good. There was always an abundance of it, but very little selection and huge lack of flavour. I love South American/Central American food and was very disappointed to see they did not offer much of it. As for a la carte restaurants, we went to the Mediterranean restaurant (would not recommend), Japanese (decent), Thai (decent) and Italian (nothing special). None of the restaurants or buffets had very good air circulation or conditioning, which makes for a very uncomfortable eating experience in constant 30+ weather. Luckily for us there is a restaurant located only a five minute walk away called Woody's which allowed us to take a break from the resort's food. I enjoyed their hot wings and poutine (yes, poutine!).

As for the service, not even sure where to begin. The buffet staff were not very good. They mostly ignored our tables. Would only come by to visit maybe once during our meal, and could be seen busy socializing with fellow colleagues. I often had to track down water myself. They also hardly smiled, which is not a requirement, but I would feel a little more comfortable not seeing them as looking constantly miserable. The service was good at most of the bars. The best service was the stand alone bar near the Pacifico pool (also the pool open late). Their menu is very limited but if you advise them what you would like in your drink they will do their best.

One thing that really irritated me about this resort was the rudeness of many of the employees. When walking down the paths they would walk five abreast leaving no room for the clients to walk. They do not move to accomodate the guests, instead they force you to walk off the path and around them.

The rooms were pretty clean, but very worn. My sheets and comforter were VERY itchy and scratchy and the bed was extremely uncomfortable. But on the plus side, the shower always had hot water, we had a very nice view of the ocean, and the air conditioner worked, perhaps too well. It was always extremely cold in our room and there were no controls on the air conditioner.

I would not advise this hotel for people with physical disabilities or people who have difficulty walking long distances. Everything is very spread out, and there are steep hills to be walked. There is a shuttle service available but it does take awhile for it to arrive, so plan ahead if you need it to be somewhere at a certain time.

The price was very good, but after a 10 night stay, we were excited to leave (not a good sign). I don't think I would return here unless the price was even better. Beautiful country, but the resort needs some training and work.

We stayed at the Royal Decameron in Panama in January 2013 for 1 week with Transat Holidays/ Nolitours. We brought our 4 month old along with us.
Air Transat was good, we were able to get bulkhead seats which allowed us access to a "skynet" or basinette that fastened to the wall that we could put our son in. It came in very handy for that 7 hour flight. We did have to take him out during turbulance and hold him during take off and landing. The food onboard was ok. The flight attendants were great and very helpful being it was our first time flying with a baby. - We were allowed to take anything we needed for the baby onboard (Ex. milk or formula, medicine etc.) We also took a stroller which we were able to check for free!

Once we arrive in Panama we had to go through immigration, get our bags and then go through another immigration check where they scanned your bags. There were 3 buses going to this resort. (it has over 800 rooms)

The ride to the resort was about 2 hours. We stopped about half way for a bathroom/ drink break at a little restaurant.

Upon arrival at the resort, our bags had to go through a security clearance, so we were told that they would be outside our doors within an hour. They provided us with dinner reservations for one of the buffet restaurants. By the time we got down to supper it was around 9 pm already.

The rooms were nice, our was quite large. It had a king bed and 2 small beds with 3 sides, which we pushed together and put pillows around for our baby to sleep. We were on the ground level and had a little patio with 2 chairs and a nice view of the ocean. We were at the top of the hill.

The resort is on a hill and is very large. There are 3 lobbys. If you have any sort of mobility problems, this may not be the place for you. However there are shuttle vans that take people around. Most of the restaurants are at the bottom of the hill or in lobby 1 where there are stairs only.. No ramps (that i saw)
The resort itself is very beautiful! well landscaped and taken care of. The beach is beautiful, very long and wide. You'll need to wear shoes across it during midday, it is very hot until you get down to the wet stuff. The Ocean is quite warm, but a little cloudy from the sand being mixed up. There are alot of pools! Adults only, kids, activities etc! It's hard to find lounge chairs in the shade or under an umbrella around the pools though unless you get there first thing in the morning.

Lots of bars and the restaurants are good, not to much selection but enough that you don't go hungry!

We went to the following a la carte:
Mogo Mogo - Thai - This was very good, we went twice, they 2 different menus
Steakhouse - This was ok.. not the best in my opinion.
Italain - This was buffet style but very tasty!

The only excursion we did was the Panama Canal Partial Transit. This was very neat and interesting! We saw a panamax vessel going through a lock beside us and quite a few more throughout the canal. We were lucky there were no hold ups though, otherwise it could have taken hours longer! But i thought it was well worth it. They also had very tasty lunch on board!

The only downside to this resort is that it is so far away from Panama City and alot of the attractions. But they are building an airport right near this resort that is supposed to be finished in 2014 so that'll make the transfer 5 minutes instead of 2 + hours. And then doing a transfer for excursions won't seem so bad!

Overall we had a great time and enjoyed everything! We have no complaints! Definately got our exercise walking up and down those hills though! :) Makes you feel better about eating and drinking so much ;)

Room Tip: If you don't want to walk up and down the hills, opt for an oceanfront room. We were in # 41 bet...

Here are a few glimpses of hotel’s nightly entertainment offered by a group of dedicated and competent staff who deliver performances which frequently go beyond a traditional format of what is being offered through all inclusive-type of resort. Variety of themes, elaborate costumes, multiple choreographic efforts, stage designs, and lighting, where you can also brush with an art of visual effects. All of this is offered in combination of engaging semi-stand up consistently delivered with energy, ease and confidence by someone who was able to develop his own style. Great way to wrap up your day regardless of your cultural or linguistic background.

Let me begin by saying this is a Decameron hotel. Decameron is a Colombian company and their hotels reflect South/Central American culture and values. Every Decameron I have visited focuses on a fun-filled family vacation and not on a fancy North American-style room with North American amenities. Not everyone there speaks English but they do speak excellent Spanish! When in Rome, people!

Having said that, the Royal Decameron in Farallon proved to be a delightful place to vacation. Our room was basic but very clean and comfortable. The view was spectacular. Housekeeping was a little less attentive than I was expecting from a Decameron – even with a generous daily tip.

I rather enjoyed the drive from Panama City to Farallon but judging by other reviews, I’m the only person who did. You get to see the city, the entrance to the canal, the suburbs and some more rural areas.

The hotel offered an array of trips for a reasonable cost – this is an interesting part of the world to visit and for sure don’t miss touring the canal. Check in/out was very efficient though we were left to our own devices to find our room in the dark. We followed the many maps without difficulty.

A variety of a la carte restaurants was offered but we dined at only one – the Mediterranean which was located on the beach and was truly excellent. My teenager preferred the buffets so that’s where we ate. Panamanian food is blander than many Latin-American cuisines but this is not the fault of the hotel. On the Mexican theme night, the food was particularly enjoyable. Fish is a staple in Panama and fresh fruits, vegetables and salads were always on offer as well as freshly baked goods – cakes, breads and cookies - yum.

We enjoyed the entertainment – aerobics, dance lessons, music and games in the pool during the day, and karaoke, cheesy show and disco at night. There were many opportunities to hang out with guests from all over South and Central America which I particularly enjoyed. I thought it a little odd that the hotel color-codes the guests but I guess they have a purpose.

The weather in February was perfect for a sun-lover – mid thirties Celsius each day but with a breeze off the ocean that one Panamanian laughingly described as “fresh”.

I was surprised by the mess left behind on the beach and around the pool by the local Panamanians. That probably explained why there was so much trash along the highway and strewn around the city.

We were very happy with this vacation – the country, the people and the hotel.

Sorry for such a late review, we stayed there late Feb. to early March 2012. We did a split trip 11 days at the Decameron and 3 days at the Radison in Panama City. We did enjoy our stay at both resorts. I would not rush back to Panama but would consider going again once the airport is open near the resort, the only concern I would have is that it will be almost too close and maybe a bit noisy from the planes coming and going.

If you have mobility issues this resort is not for you as it is built on a hill with lots of stairs .We paid extra for ocean front and was very glad we did as you are very close to beach, restaurants, and pools. We did find the resort to be in good shape, the rooms could use some updating but overall not bad.

The service and the food were fair and typical of what you may expect at a resort of this caliber. You will not go hungry, lots of food and was prepared well some different dishes but was okay, the ala cartes where all excellent and had excellent meals and service.

The beach is amazing long and deep , the only problem for us was the heat by 12 noon it is scorching and it is even hard to walk on the sand , you are looking for some shade .They do have lots of shelters on the beach and also by the pool. For us the best time of the day was early morning and at 3:00 till 6:00.

We went on 2 tours, one was a tour of a mountain and you visited a zoo and went on a trail over little bridges saw a waterfall not worth the time and money. The other tour we went on was a tour of the Panama Canal which was well worth the trip although it is a long day it was amazing to be on a boat and going through the locks and have a huge shipping boat right behind you.

My wife went on a shopping trip into Panama City went to a huge mall she says the shopping was good and you would not even know that you were in panama but could have been shopping at home ,very modern. I will have to take her word on that, although it takes a long time to go there and back. That would be my only complaint as this resort is a distance from Panama City.

In the area of the resort there is Woody’s bar and grill we ate there twice and had very good meals, also there is a couple of little stores where you can buy some clothes, hats, etc. and some groceries. There also was one other restaurant but we did not eat there, we felt very safe walking around day and night.

We did go into Penome a city not very far from this resort maybe a 20 min. car ride we hopped on the local bus just outside the security gate of the resort and had no problem getting back to the resort. We do not speak Spanish but we were able to gesture to the driver where we were to picked up at to go back to the resort .We went to Penome to check out carnival.

In conclusion I would go back to this resort or maybe try another if available from Saskatoon; this last year (2013) I believe the Decameron was the only resort that you were able to book for. I would most likely wait for the airport to open in that area as the traveling to and from Panama City gets to you as most of the activities/tours are in Panama City. Go and enjoy, travel and see new sights and adventures, sometimes you just have to go for it! I am always glad we try different resorts and areas of the world is it that what’s traveling is all about!
