I'd read several reviews about the locks. Some said it was boring. When we went, we must have timed it just right. We were able to watch 4 boats go through. You are able to get a great view of the boats by way of an elevated observation deck. There's a small fee but I thought it was worth it.

The Gatun Locks were very impressive and I understand why the Canal is one of the seven man-made wonders of the world. We watched a container ship pass through the locks with the use of a tug boat and the "mules". We would suggest anyone interested in the Canal to visit this attraction. It was only $5 to visit...well worth the money.

We did a combined train trip from Panama City to Colon along the entire length of the canal and were picked up by our tour guide at the final destination. He took us to Portobelo and were not disappointed.
On the way home we called in at the Colon free trade zone for some duty free shopping ( allow at least 2 hours) and decided to call in at the Gatun Locks which were only recently opened for tourists. Words cannot describe how glad we were to have made this little detour. This is the way and place to see the locks in operation. Just incredible.
We were lucky to watch 5 ships to enter and leave the locks within just over 1 hour. You are so close to the action you can almost touch the structure of the ships and exchange greetings with crew members. The best $ 5 we have spent to see this incredible spectacle with some great commentary from the local guide.
This is what you expect the Panama Canal to look like. Don't miss it!

Being engineers, my husband and I definitely wanted to see the canal locks while in Panama. When we arrived, a cruise ship was traveling through. I don't think the ship could have been any wider and still fit. Despite being a hundred years old, it was very impressive. I think we stayed there over an hour just watching the ships go by. Highly recommend visiting these locks to see them raise or lower (depending on direction) the ships 85 feet! Magnificent example of an engineering marvel!
