“Very convenient, clean, great for the price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2012

I spent a weekend in the Melia Panama Canal, and given the price ($80) it was very good. The price was for a king-size bedroom, and included free wifi, breakfast, large safe, large bathroom, use of facilities like the pool area (very large and clean), kayaks (used it to go around the Gatun Lake), gym, etc. The best part is that it is only 5 minutes off the main Panama-Colon road and 45 minutes from Panama City when using the toll road "autopista". Close-by attractions are the spectacular San Lorenzo fortress, the Gatun locks (Atlantic side of the Panama Canal), San Lorenzo National Park, and the Shearman Shelter Harbor. Service was not great (but difficult to get anything better I guess). I do recommend it for a weekend get-away.

Room Tip: Better to get high-floor rooms, and ask for rooms with a view to the Lake.

Best choice ever. I'd been to Colón with my girlfriend just for a night and we love that place. Nice breakfast, nice swimming pool, nice sight... Unfortunately, Colón city doesn't have a good structure to receive tourists. In my opinion, this hotel is the best choice around.
The ONLY PROBLEM I had was when I received my credit card bill. They WERE SUPPOSED TO RECHARGE U$ 128,60 INSTEAD OF U$ 200,00 FROM MY CREDIT CARD. I ATTACHED THE PROOF OF SALE in an e-mail and I`M STILL LOOKING FORWARD TO AN ANSWER. SINCE JULY, 2011!!!

I recently stayed here while touring the area. It is located on a lake and surrounded by lush vegetation. The grounds are beautiful and quiet . Service was slow checking in but no real problems. The room was spacious and clean and very attractive with painted tiles decorating the floor. The mattress was old and lumpy as were the pillows. The bathroom was also spacious. The shower was a combo shower-tub. It was hard getting in and out of the tub because the tub was placed deeper than usual. The breakfast buffet had a lot of choices and was good. There is a dinner buffet nightly but I was not hungry enough for that much food so decided to order off the menu. The waitress acted like that was not the norm and it took forever for the food to be served and it took forever to get the check.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front side have a view of the beautiful lake.

We got in at 5.30 pm and nobody seems to see us. Staff at the front desk were very busy doing nothing, had no attention to us. No one to help us with luggage.
Rooms are old fashioned. Fridge does not work, ice melting with a lot of water on the floor. Curtain dirty etc. etc
Staff asked to repair or change the fridge promised to come but did not. Big lights outside the hotel resulting in a very light room. We could read a book behind the curtain.
We like to drink a good glass of wine: the bar was serving just one sort (the cheapest they could find)
The buffet was not quality food for a high price.
We decided to leave next day.

The setting is beautiful. The condo we stayed in was very nice & the bed, great. It's good to have a kitchen if you are here. And, it would be a difficult stay if you had no car and no Spanish. For many people, it might be wiser to stay in Panama City and just do excursions up to Colon. This hotel looked like the nicest in the area, but it's not far to Panama City, and the complaints of other reviewers on this sight are understandable. They had a chronic towel problem when we were there, too, and I observed long queues at reception, though we were able to avoid them ourselves. BTW, the road signage in Panama is woefully inadequate...and even the GPS was hard to use if you didn't already know the area and the exact names the GPS would recognize. We had a relaxed attitude about where to go/what to do and enough Spanish to get by so it was a fine stay.

Room Tip: It's good to have a kitchen if you have a car and are staying more than one night. The restaura...

Great place to stay and a very nice restaurant. Really enjoyed dancing to the band in the lounge after dinner. Be sure to walk the grounds, we saw a sloth up in one of the trees by the boat dock.

We spend only one night here. Got in at 4:30 and there was nothing to do except swim, but there were no towels. The pool is really nice and the interior of the hotel pretty. The rooms are not very nice--battered and uncomfortable. Admitedly our Spanish is poor (our fault) and the only hotel worker who spoke English recommended a restaurant in Colon, but it was impossible to find and Colon is dangerous at night so we had to go back to the Melia for food. The restaurant grudingly seated us for an expensive buffet (not quality food), but wouldn't give us drinks or wait on us in any way. A hostess asked for our room number, so we assumed they were going to charge the meal to our room, but when we went to leave, a "bouncer" stopped us and made us give them a credit card anyway. We were confused because we were afraid they were going to charge us twice, but someone came and explained our credit card wasn't certified to pay for anything but the hotel stay, so we had to pay the restaurant directly. That wasn't a problem--we were just confused. We chose this hotel over the Gamboa Resort because we thought it would provide a more authentic experience, but the other guest were part of tour groups and there wasn't much to do. So I recommend you go to Gamboa instread.!
