“Portobelo Wonders!”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

This part of Panama is almost unknown and a real treasure for intrepid tourists! We explored this entire part of the coast with Jason's Portobelo Adventures by kayak and foot, through the rain forest of this World Heritage Site, up the rivers that empty into this beautiful bay, named by Columbus, and out to the unspoiled reefs for some of the best snorkeling we've ever experienced. This is one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet, besides being incredibly rich in history and Jason makes sure you see and learn all the best of it. His three-man kayaks are easy for even beginners to maneuver and the rivers and islands and reefs he takes you to have such an abundance of life that you'll never forget it. Don't miss this part of Panama and Jason's expertise at revealing it. He even offers free overnight accommodation at a guest house in the jungle with his tours which are very reasonably priced!

“Fascinating little city”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

If you have time, definitely go to Portobelo. You can see the original custom house where the Spanish would store gold etc, prior to transport back to Spain. There are several forts that you can walk through that have the original cannons sitting around. Walking to the end of the fort gives you great views of the small city, the Custom House and the church.

“Interesting history”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

The ruins and history of Portobelo are very interesting if you know a little history of Panama....otherwise you need a tour guide. My husband and I took a tour on our own with a guide and loved it. He provided the answers to questions that we didn't know from reading our tour book. The tour was a little pricey, but it did include lunch, train ride, Gatun Locks, Portobelo National Park (where the ruins were located) and pick up and drop off at our hotel in Gamboa.

“Some ruins”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

We came to Portobelo in a history trip with our kids since they are crazy about pirates. We were expecting some more forts and more preserved structures. Anyway we were able to see the cannons and learn about its history.

“Best place we traveled in Panamá”
Reviewed March 21, 2013 via mobile

We were advised to go to Portobelo by a resident who has lived and explored Panamá for almost 25 years. He was right. The drive up was great ( take the highway and not the street that runs through the town), we could go 120km/h until we reached the turnoff in Colon. It was nice to see the small towns along the way to Portobelo. The buses (red devils) are nuts and the drivers think they are king of the road. We did several hikes and saw the old forts and enjoyed the boats and the water views. Bring cash, especially if you stop by a small town en route to Pb from Colon. I will go back there next trip
