“Medieval canons to protect Portobelo”
Reviewed January 31, 2012

The park is located on the Carribean coast of Panama.
When you enter Portobelo town you can park your car near the Bateria Santiago and visit the ruins of the 18th century defense system of the town. There is still a lot of work to do to make the site attractive. At the moment of our visit the ruins were a ruin!
You can see the thick walls with a lot of cannons pointing to the sea.
You can also climb the nearby hillside up to the Mirador El Peru which gives you a beautifull view on Portobelo town, the harbour and the ruins.
Apparently you can also take a boat here and cross the bay to see some ruins of another defense system.
In the town you can visit the Iglesia San Felipe to see the black Christ and the Real Aduana customs house.
Next to the church are the ruins of the Castillo de San Jeronimo. Here the ruins are well maintained. Once again you find a lot of cannons, thick walls and little towers to stand guard.
Portobelo must have been an important town and harbour in the past with this extended defense system. This is really a place you must visit if you are in the neighborhood of Colon.

“A piece of history”
Reviewed January 20, 2012

A few rusty canons and the leftovers of some old buildings, right at the Caribbean sea. Not really worth a big trip - but why not combine it with an excursion to Isla Grande, only about 30 minutes boat trip?

“Worth visiting.”
Reviewed June 4, 2008

El Fuerte de Portobelo is on the coast, in the Province of Colón. It is about two hours from Panamá City. It is worth going there to explore the ruins, see the church, and check out the town.
