While visiting Boquete the top of my list was to see a quetzal. Late on the first afternoon we decided to scope out the start of the trail so we could make an early start the following day. FInding the trail head is very simple and we walked the first 200-300m in the last hour of light. Right in front of us was a pair (m + f) of quetzals. They didn't stick around long, but teased us by repeatedly flying 20 or 30 meters further down the trail, again perching in clear site.
As it turns out, the next day and a half (until we left) it was bucketing down so we didn't make it back. Thats for next trip

This is one of the top 10 birds, worldwide, for birders to see during their lifetime, and you can almost be guaranteed you'll see one if you book with Chago or his son Cesar. Both are excellent with their bird calls and very few guides know how to call a Quetzal.

On our visit, we saw two females and one young male; so no long tail feathers. Still it was a pleasure to walk the trail and talk with Cesar about the coffee plantation, the vegetation, and to identify several species of birds.

Chago gets booked in advance, so if he isn't available, ask to go with Cesar. Either one will give you a wonderful hike and you'll identify a lot of birds. And, give yourself a half day. You can go for a shorter length of time, but it's a perfect way to spend some time in Boquete.

Chago's cellular is 620-2187 and his home phone is 720-4548. If you're staying in Boquete, they'll also know how to get a hold of the wonderful guides.
