La Montana y el Valle Coffee Estate Inn
Ranked #3 of 12 Hotels in Boquete
Reviewed April 17, 2010

Our recent stay of 5 nights at the Coffee Estate Inn far exceeded all expectations of both my husband and I. The luxury bungalow and surrounding grounds were nothing short of magical. Relaxing on our private deck overlooking the constantly changing skies of Volcan Baru and the rain forest was the perfect start and end to each day. Inn keepers, Jane and Barry, are keenly in tune to the environment that surrounds them, the Pamanian culture and all that the region has to offer. Their recomendations for hiking, dining and touring the area were superb and made our short visit of five days relaxing, invigorating and inspiring.

As hobby photographers the setting at Coffee Inn Estate was perfect for everything from landscape views of Volcan Baru to macro images of the incredible flowers, birds and butterflies that fill the grounds. Our hiking and touring excursions rounded out the porfolio of photos that we were able to capture. I have included a few of our favorite bird images from Coffee Estate Inn gardens with this review but, if you wish to view our photos from Panama visit our website www.pbase.com/larrywilkinson which includes a large variety of photography from the area.

The location of the Coffee Estate Inn was perfect for us, just outside the downtown of Boquete, easily accessible to the town as well as hiking trails but in a very private, quiet setting surrounded by nature. The cabana was immaculately clean and comfortable, with fresh floral bouquets from the gardens and extremely comfortable sleeping environment. The friendly and conciensious housekeeping staff kept the bungalow stocked with a basket of fresh fruit, also picked from the grounds, and fabulous breads baked by Barry and Jane. With the juicer in our kitchen we made fresh orange and papaya juice every day with fruits from the basket. And of course the fresh roasted coffee from the estate was superb. We brought several bags home with us to Michigan and every sip brings back great memories.

The Inn does not have a restaurant, per se. But Barry and Jane offer a terrific menu of delicious dinners served in the privacy of your bungalow along with great wines. We enjoyed dinner in our place on our arrival night which was terrific after 12 hours of travel. And with the fresh fruit, breads and coffee were the perfect breakfast fare for us. For dining out there are many great choices in Boquete including, French, Italian and Panamanian cuisine. We were also pleased to find some excellent live music in the evenings in town.

The value of the environment, the accomodations and the staff at Coffee Estate Inn far exceeded the cost. While in Boquete we visited many of the other accomodations we had considered and while all were nice, none had the ambience of the Coffee Estate Inn - we were more than pleased at our choice and cannot wait to return. The area has much to offer in culture and outdoor activity from the rainforest to the oceans and our first trip of 5 days allowed us just the beginning of our exploration of this gem of an area.

Our 5 day stay at the Coffee Estate Inn was perfect in every way. The hosts Jane and Barry were the most gracious and the Inn, grounds, and view exceeded our expectations in every way. The coffee and fruit grown on the Estate grounds, were both excellent.
We will return for a second trip.

Skip Mexico or the Caribbean one year and come here instead. You will be very glad that you visited Boquete and the Coffee Inn Estate and that you met Jane and Barry.
The highlands around Boquete have much of the awesome vegetation of the tropics, without the intense heat. Jane and Barry are some of the nicest, friendliest, eager to help hosts we have ever met. The coffee farm, gardens, and mountain and valley views are incredible. We learned so much about coffee from Barry...I've been motivated to learn more since I've been home. The food is as good as all the reviews say. Barry's coffee liqueur is one of the best things I've ever sipped. Squeezing our own orange juice in the morning was another highlight for me. The mangos were primo.
We had a great hike with Hans. I recommend you go out with a guide first and have him/her show you exactly some of the other trail heads you might want to go on. They aren't always well-marked and accessibility can change frequently. Also, it's easy to spend most of the time walking on roads instead of footpaths, which might not be what you want to do. (Although Jane does have a good set of instructions that is very helpful.) You can also walk right on the roads surrounding the inn.
Although you'll want to enjoy the food at the Inn, save some meals to explore the restaurants in Boquete. We absolutely loved Machu Picchu, especially the searfood -- for those who like or want to learn about Peruvian food.
Barry and Jane are always available to answer questions, give suggestions. Or you are sure to enjoying just chatting with Jane and Barry about Boquete, some of its characters, Panama, other parts of Central America, or some of their own adventures. I’m not sure how they get their work done, work with their staff, cook, roast, brew, keep up so well with their future guests, while always being available for the guests currently at the Inn. Their pride comes through, and rightly so!

The Coffee Estate Inn is the only place to stay in Boquete! Jane and Barry have created a one-of-a-kind garden estate on the side of a mountain. Your cabana is surrounded by flowering gardens, paths and fruit trees. From the cabana is a view of the mountains and the town of Boquete that is incomparable. Having read previous reviews of The Coffee Estate Inn, we booked three days and wished we could have stayed longer. The cabanas are new, beautifully maintained, exceptionally clean (the windows are sparkling!), the bed was amazingly comfortable (great mattress!), fluffy towels and the filtered water system on the estate eliminated any concerns about tap water. The best? Estate grown coffee roasted daily with Barry's homemade scones and breads and as many fresh oranges as you desire (seriously, I think we drank a gallon of orange juice every day). Jane and Barry want you to love their estate and Boquete as much as they do and it shows. Jane was so helpful in arranging our trip to Boquete, sightseeing in the mountains and town, and arranging a chaufered drive to the Bocas. Traveling so far from home is a leap of faith - Jane and Barry made it easy, memorable and super comfortable. They are to what every innkeeper should aspire.

After a kayak trip in Kuna Yala, and a trek in the Darien, a couple of nights at the Coffee Inn Estate seemed to be the perfect place to relax. It certainly lived up to all our expectations and in some cases surpassed them.

The cottage was perfect, it was like having our own house for a couple of days. The mountain views were superb, the gardens, flowers were lovely and the service was amazing. Jane and Barry have thought of everything and their attention to detail was amazing. Everything from the laundry, to the freshly baked cheese scones and banana bread and home grown coffee was divine.

The food was brilliant and everything was so perfectly done- the flowers on the table, the choice of wine, we were very impressed. We will certainly be back, it was a real pleasure to stay at the Coffee Inn Estate and Barry and Jane have done a tremendous job of sharing their lives with their guests. I recommend doing a coffee tour with Barry, it was very informative and enjoyable and it certainly made me take a new approach to coffee.
