After one of our hikes around Boquete this past week, we stopped for lunch at George's Fireside Grill. While there, we watched that day's catch of fresh ahi tuna brought in from Miguel's pickup truck, fileted in the kitchen by George, the chef and owner of the restaurant, and presented to us as a magnificent culinary delight - slightly seared, fresh tuna encrusted with sesame seeds, topped with a special fresh maracuya sauce and all presented on a toasted hard-crusted bun for a sandwich of unbelievable flavors and freshness (with sliced home-grown tomatoes, crisp lettuce and freshly picked herbs straight from George's own gardens out back) - and a side of traditional rustic thick "papas"were fried to perfection (or thick yucca fries could be substituted "as you like").Mmmm, mmm, all were the absolute best ever!

We walked down to George's Grill from the Palo Alto Hotel and found it to be outstanding--the food, the service, and the casual, rustic atmosphere. From the outside, it looks like a pit BBQ place you might find in Texas. Once you're inside, and see what is available from the menu written in chalk on the wall, it's apparent that George's serves higher-end cuisine that one might normally find in a fancy dancy restaurant. But eating is believing, and we were thoroughly impressed. My wife and I ate here twice. The first time I ordered the grilled tuna with mashed potatoes and vegis, and the second time I had the roasted BBQ pork loin with basil garnish and mashed and fried plantains. The drinks were also very fresh--we had a set of mojitos with mint from his garden. Perhaps the most interesting part of the experience was listening to George himself talk about his training as a chef in Canada and how he eventually lived in Costa Rica for a while as a chef, and then moved to Boquete to open his own restaurant. He is a fascinating person to talk and listen to, which for me was an interesting and memorable experience from our time in Panama. Make a point to eat at George's while you're in Boquete - I enjoyed it more than the beautiful but stuffy Panamonte restaurant, which was far more expensive and unnecessarily pretentious.

This is a small and very simple restaurant, with very few tables. It is run by the chef who is the owner and his wife who is from Boquete. It is a surreal ambiance because it is haphazardly decorated and while we dined they played Edith Piaf from a laptop into speakers and wine is served in champagne glasses. The food is good, however, and the prices are extremely reasonable by any standards. It is difficult to find a whole lobster at $18 nowadays! So if you are adventuresome, do try it, we found it great fun!

George's was a great surprise. Jason from the Garden Inn recommended we try George's, as it is just a short walk from the inn. It looks pretty rustic from the outside, but George's black lab, Bambi, will offer you a friendly greeting. We enjoyed wine, beer, and great food. We tried the Mediterranean appetizer plate, with George using his mother's recipes and veggies from his own garden. We also tried the lobster bisque, filet mignon, and the red snapper. Our plates were wiped clean. For dessert, we ordered a chocolate cheesecake. Instead, we got an amazing chocolate tort with creamy, light vanilla ice cream.
