“Worth it”

A very steep trail! Bring food, water, and warm layers. The conventional wisdom is to start hiking around midnight/1 am (took me about 5 hours to get to the top) because you can see the sunrise at the top. The real reason to hike in the dark is because if you could see how steep the trail is, you would be disheartened. Wide, rocky, dirt-road trail very easy to follow on the Boquete side.

“In Search of a Sunrise”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Go for the midnight hike, rise above the clouds and experience the sunrise. See both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans from the top of the world.

“Great masochistic hike”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

13 Km and 1700M vertical, average grade +15 percent, 5 hours up and 3 hours down on slippery sliding path, hiking poles suggested.
Start at first light and you will enjoy the day. Take 5 dollar bills for the Ranger station entry fee.

“Nice hike but do not go too early”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

We started our hike to Volcano Baru few minutes before midnight. The sky was clear, so we choose perfect night. We are in average physical condition, so we were expecting to reach the top of Volcano in approximately 6 hours, so that we would be there latest half an hour before sunrise. We were not in hurry (I would rather say we were really slow), but we reach the top in 4,5 hours. That would not be so bad if it would not be so freezing and windy there. Anyway the nigh view from Volcano is also magnificent and the felling is really great when you know that you made it. Way down in much more challenging, because it is very slippery, so it took us also 4,5 hours to the ranger station. As there is usually no taxis and buses to take you back to Boquete, do not hesitate to stop one of bypassing cars. People there are very friendly and sooner or later someone will give you a lift.

“A good hike and view!”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

Before doing the hike, I read a lot of comment on TripAdvisor and it all depends on your physical condition. I was suprised how easy it was comparing to the comments we read before. It may take you 8-9 hours to go up only if you are in a really bad shape. We were a group of 3 (one guy and two girls) around 25 years old and with backpacks of around 10-15 kilos. We did the hike for two days. The first day it took us around 5 hours to get to the camping but we stopped often to drink or eat something, make some pictures, look around. From the camping to the top is around 30-40 min. On the way back it was a bit hard and you have to be careful. So, the hike was not that difficult, average hike to the top. And I would not say that we were in some amazing physical condition. I personally train 3-4 times per week but nothing extreme, just average. And I go hiking several times per year. Before going just consider your condition. We were close to giving up after reading all the comment here and I am really happy that we didnt. The view from the top is amazing and we saw the both oceans at the same time. But for this you have to go early in the morning at sunrise. Also, it is very safe and imposible to get lost, so you can do it easily by ourself with out paying to a guid.
