We took a guided tour to the Monkey Trail at Chorcha, near David. This is hike through a patch of rainforest in between farmlands, up to a plateau 300 meters higher up. Our very friendly guide was helpful and knowledgeable and pointed out many different kinds of birds and species living there. At first we were a bit miffed that we went 1:15 hours out of Boquete towards David / Panama City along the Panamerican highway (we thought we were going into the cloud forest around Volcan Baru / Boquete), but it was worth it. We saw a few toucans and at the very end, up in an almostbarren tree, a troop of around 20 Howler monkeys. They were very close by and just eating the leaves and flowers of the tree, so we could really study them. Up on the plateau, there is a nice swimming area with waterfall. Our guide had brought us all some sandwiches and fruit bars, which was really nice. The Chorcha waterfallis a well-known spot for locals for an outing and unfortunately, like in many places in Panama, there was plastic waste and litter everywhere along the path. I really appreciated that our guide got out two bags and just started collecting trash on the way down. On the way back to Boquete, we stopped at the canyon / swimming holes of Cangilones and this was a really nice stop, at no extra cost to us. Jumping in the refreshing water of the canyon was just fabulous and great fun for the kids. We really enjoyed our tour with Beyond Adventure Tours.

Given the average level of hospitality service in panama, this tour company is a breath of fresh air: on time, courteous, and accommodating. We booked a rafting tour with them, as well as an easy hike and transportation from Boquete to Bocas. Prices are reasonable. Our tour guide as well as our driver was John, owner’s cousin. John spoke terrific English, was extremely courteous, tactful and knowledgeable. We’ve learned and saw a great deal from him. Can’t recommend him enough. Pictured smallest maracuya flower and smallest visible orchid in the world.

I had found out what I could about this ride before reserving on the internet. We went prepared for a bumpy ride(though it was worse than described). We also went prepared for the cold. But the tour lacked information about the face that it went to a height of 13000 feet, so people have to be careful about altitude sickness. Also I did not know that there was about 200 m of a walk over a very rocky climb in the dark(before sunrise). As a photographer I was carrying a lot of equipment which I typically walk with. On this 'walk' however it was very difficult.
The owner of the tour Robert was very helpful and helped me through the walk. But it would have been very helpful to know this information beforehand.
The views were nice - usually the Atlantic is hard to see, and this time too it was covered by fog.
I am writing this for the benefit of people taking this tour in the future - people over 50 especially should check on how they react to quick changes in altitude.

We did two tours with Beyond Adventure Tours while staying at Hotel Los Establos in Boquete in September 2018. Anthony and Juan were incredibly informed, fun and client focused. We appreciated their knowledge of plants and animals. I also liked how they didn't push their agenda on us, but instead modified the tour, the pace, etc. to meet our needs and interests. Highly recommended.
