“Nice room, no hot water and way too noisy”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

We spend 2 nights in private room at hostel Mamalena.

+ Rooms are simple but nice with wooden floor
+ location is great.
+ pancakes

- they DON`T have hot water at all. Only cold water.
- part of the staff is too laid back, they talk with you and same time keep they feet on table.
- cockroaches
- it is right place for you if don´t mind about kids playing loud they music at 1.30 am. Staff
don´t do anything about it. It is annoying because walls are very thin.

Would I go again? No.

We stayed 3 nights at mamallena. It's located in the center of boquete and was the only hostel which had free beds during carnival. We got a 4 bed room which was nice but the next day we had to move to a dorm (they did not tell is when we arrived). In the dorm one of us got bed bugs and the stuff did not really care about that. It was unorganized and dirty there.
The pancakes for breakfast were good.
The showers only had cold water.

Hot showers was a pleasant surprise. The private room was much nicer than I expected it to be. It was very clean and the bed was comfortable. There is a big kitchen and a nice back patio space. There is a lot of space for chilling. The central location is convenient. The biggest draw back of this place is the "bro" staff that were mildly helpful but acted "too cool" to really help with any questions about the town.

We didn't look around for other accommodations in Boquete as we were planning on staying at the Mamallena Hostel in Panama City also. As adults after travelling in many places around Europe and New Zealand, my expectation of a hostel was a bit different. European hostels have changed over the years to cater to adults and their needs. We stayed in a room with an attached bathroom. I cannot speak for the dorm rooms. This hostel was barely okay. We had no hot water at all for all the 3 days that we stayed there. Even getting regular water to shower wasn't a guarantee, as we found out later. Apparently we won't get water at all during peak times, like in the mornings or in the early evenings. I wish someone had told us this before we checked into the room. There was sewage stench every time the faucet was being used in the bathroom. And lastly, the toilet has a permanent water leak, at at times it was stuck and wouldn't flush, unless you opened up the tank and wiggled around the chain. There seems to be quite time after a certain time at night. The hostel is noisy all night long and walls are very thin. So, if you are a light sleeper this place is not for you. The beds were clearly very old and move every time you turn over. Breakfast was included in the cost and consisted of pancake batter, to make pancakes ourselves, syrup and coffee you can make yourself. However, if you wanted milk in your coffee you had to buy it at the front desk for 75-cents a pint. Kitchen is small and can get crowded at times. There were different young adults at the front desk at different times. No one seemed to have any good knowledge of pretty much anything, whether it was about a sight to visit, a hike or a restaurant. You better be equipped with information yourself. The hostel is very centrally located and this is a big plus. All is all, if the owners of this hostel would invest a little more time, effort and energy on the upkeep of this hostel, it would be a great place.

Thanks so much for you longer review... will tell you something all the backpacker travelers that have been in our place like our large ktichen and they told us that is one of the best kitchen in their travel....in march when you stop by here the entire town get in problems with water supply for the first time, thing that was out of our control by then....we place already a tank for water supply and the hot water are running well....thanks so much....

Even though the whole town was without water for our 3 day stay in boquete, mamallena boquete still stands as my favourite place in all of panama.
The young staff were hilarious and totally helpful when it came to answering our questions and suggesting good places for coffee and food. We arrived for all-you-can-eat BBQ night and eventhough we didn't partake in the festivities, we were welcomed to party and drink ron con colas with everyone else.
Eventhough the party is in the air, quiet time at 11pm was strictly enforced and we were able to get tons of sleep every night.
Speaking of sleep, the beds are definitely the comfiest we experienced in our travels. Getting out of bed for free pancakes seemed like a chore, we were so comfy.
The coffee tour we did through the hostel was excellent. Totally worth the $24 to go see a very small scale plantation with the entire production process on Tito's homemade equipment.
I would recommend this hostel to anyone. Thinking of our stay there still makes me smile.

Mamallena is a little bit overrated. The hostal is quite loud as it is in the middle of Boquete. Boquete is small no need to be so so central. A Bar is right next to it and gives you musicinfluences while sleeping. The hostal is quite big and the kitchen crowed. The staff is really helpful if you ask them and even if they sell tours they had good advices for doing things cheaper on your own (hikes). So big plus for that, but some of the staff was also really arrogant. Why, I do not know, but maybe it was just a temporary thing.

If you wanna have a busy place, it is okay.

Hello Stefi, thanks so much for you review in February 2014....according with what you said that our place is over rated i will clarify to you something, our hostel have 5 years old and we have been hosting more than 50,000 according to our books, so the majority of this clients have been satify with our place in general...is sad that people basicly dont write reviews coz they are busy traveling and enjoying their time rather than been attach to a computer.... YOU CANNOT said is over rated coz basicly 200 people give us a good rate in tripadvisor...be clear beauty is in the eyes of the beholder....thanks....
