“The Riverfront is great”
Reviewed April 3, 2010

Really charming little hotel close to the River, nicely decorated, clean and run by friendly helpful people.
The Location is perfect and really close to the center of the cosy little town.
Be sure to make your reservation for a room to the riverfront, as the backside to the street is kind of noisy sometimes - it's nex to the yard of the supermarket "Romero", so truck-deliveries happening there. On the Riverfront, you only hear the water of the river flowing over the stones - We loved to listen to this sound while falling into sleep. Eaven if the sound was quite loud. (Similar to the sound of close ocean waves).

Some rooms are in the neighbor-house called "Suenos Del Rio", where they also have a common kitchen and a small terracce at the Riverfromt with some tables and hammocks, which can be used by everyone - the houses seem to belong together.
However, cooking on your own is not really neccassary, as food in the the near-by restaurant "Central Park" is really delious and unbelivable cheap. Also the hotel-restaurant can be recommended with the perfect view on the river.

The hotel is also liked to a scooter-rental for USD 25,00/day. It's really recommended if you're no serious full-time hikers. A lot of things are to see in Boquete itself, but the surrunding is also so beautiful to explore on your own. The hotel staff hands out a copy/map with more than 11 interesting spots to see. Driving with the good-quality scooter in an aerea with less traffic was found safe and easy.

It will most probably be the first link when you search for accommodation in Bouquete. It is one of the most popular hostels in town. Great location, right in “downtown”, next to the river. I was persuaded to stay here by the great service I received even before coming to Panama. David - the owner - was very helpful arranging everything and answering hundreds of questions I had.

The hostel has a typical “backpacking” atmosphere and clientele. No surprises here. Rooms, hmmm – that’s where I’d make some improvements. For the price we were charged, I’d expect at least clean bedding. Plus, refreshing the wall paint or investing in new mattresses would not hurt either. (This is said by a person who completely didn’t mind a week in a bamboo shack with bucket, rain water shower in Kuna Yala.)

The neat thing about the hostel is the small terrace facing the river. On a hot day, stretching on a sun chair with a bottle of beer does the trick.

I had originally booked Hostel Rio Refuge because it looked cheapest online. When I went to confirm all my bookings a week before my trip they had no record of my reservation. I quickly emailed Hostal Boquete who hooked me up! I was so grateful for their last minute accomodation!

The day we arrived in Boquete we had left the San Blas at 9 am via boat and jeep, taken the 2 pm bus from Panama City to David, arrived in David at 9 pm to get on the one hour bus to Boquete, and then found ourselves in Boquete somewhere around 11 pm. We were exhausted. Boquete is DEAD at night and we weren't sure if that meant it was safe and quiet or abandoned and... not safe. I had emailed David about our late arrival and again he reassured me. We found our way to the Hostal and had our first hot shower since arriving in Panama!

We woke up to the sound of the river flowing out our window (GET A RIVER ROOM!) and went to have the best coffee in Panama. We wound up staying an extra night because we had so much fun in Boquete and the best nights sleeps at Hostal Boquete. We went to hot springs, swam in rivers, hiked Sendero de Los Quetzales, made friends at local coffee houses, enjoyed all the amazing restaurants, went ziplining (and saw a Quetzal!), and more. Boquete is great!

One night a ceiling tile did fall in the hallway outside our room and sometimes doors would bang due to the wind travelling through. The place definitely needs remodeling but for the price, all of that becomes character. :-)

PS If someone at the desk offers to hook you up with a guide for any activiites vet them better than we did. Since we usually don't use guides we didn't aggressively negotiate. We later found out the agreed upon price was PER PERSON, not total. Also, if they try to tell you you can leave to hike Sendero De Los Quetzales at 9 am tell them you'll find someone else. You'll wind up doing what we did, running the trail to avoid being caught out their after dark. You have to bus, or somehow travel to David and then Cerro Ancon, where you pick up the trail that will return you to Boquete. To have sufficient time you should be on your way by 7 am.

I spent four days here while I was in Boquete. My biggest pleasure was sitting in one of the hammocks out back by the river, reading in the morning sun. The staff is friendly (David, the owner, is from the US and a good source of info about what to do around Boquete and getting around), the place is clean, there's pretty decent hot water and internet access.

One thing to be aware of: one side of this hotel faces the river, but the back faces the loading dock of a grocery store. I was in a room in the back. I travel with earplugs and slept OK, but these rooms can be noisy, so light sleepers should consider this.

The crowd I met here was a mix of younger backpacker types and retirement age US expats. People were friendly, and those with limited Spanish will get by OK here. There's a small restaurant and porch facing the river that's a fine place to sit and have a beer.

We thought it was a very cute, charming hostal. We loved the river just outside and the possibility to sit by the river and relax. Nice vibe and friendly staff. Great location. Our room was a bit dark but otherwise ok, nothing special. Would stay there again.

The location of the hostel is the best in the whole town - riverfront makes it beautiful and the very center makes it practical! You can find more romantic places out of the town, but if you want to be in a close walking distance to everything (bus station, shops, restaurants and meeting&booking point for the organized excursions) and not to spend a fortune, and also to be lulled in sleep by the river, then definitely stay there.
Rooms are rather plain and look a bit more dirty than they are (actually they are not), but hey - what can you expect for that price, and with such an amount of outdoor activities as Boquete offers you are not going to stay much indoors anyway. And - there are lovely balconies!
A great asset is the owner David. He is very welcoming and gives great travel tips.
We also liked a lot, that he was very quick and efficient replying our booking e-mails.

Great place to stay that is one block away from the heart of town, within walking distance of the three bars, as well as all the tour operators. It's a clean, quiet place along the river, but there are always travelers there looking to talk about their experiences.

David can give you a few good suggestions on what to do and knows the area very well.

Nice, clean rooms, with towels, soap and shampoo. Bed's vary in comfort, find a good one if you're going to stay there more than one night.

Don't forget about the restaurant, they have great food whether you want something local or something to remind you of home.
