Such a peaceful hostel, beautiful gardens, a spa bath by the river, fresh herbs in the garden. Kitchen is well stocked with a good range of communal food. Close walking distance to all shops. Owners are very friendly and helpful, had some communication difficulties with one of the staff. Other than that, you can not fault the place unless you do not like cats, there is one that is friendly and wanders around the whole hostel. Musical instruments to play, lots of board games, good book exchange and some impressive wrt on the walls.

As a couple, my husband and I have never stayed in a hostal - in fact, I hadn't stayed in one in 15 years so keep that in mind. But this place is really special. We arrived in the pouring rain with no umbrella & I ran around town looking at the various places from my travel guide. We could have stayed in a mid-range place in town but chose this place due to the FANTASTIC location next to a river, the social environment, and the large private room. Turns out the staff is amazing here, they really go the extra mile & are so helpful & patient with all the requests all day. They are really happy to help arrange massages, tours, guides, etc to see all the amazing things in & around Boquete. And the coffee is quite good in the morning (though some milk would be nice with it ;-0 At the end of our trip, they even offered us a ride to the bus stop which was a short ride, but nonetheless very sweet. It's really run by sweet, genuine, fun, caring group who seem to really enjoy all the tourists coming thru from a variety of countries & in a big age range too. We could have easily felt like the 'middle aged' couple here, but it was a really friendly group. Considering the price, the room was quite clean too though again I'm more accustomed to staying in mid-range hotels but it was totally acceptable and we both slept GREAT near that gurgling river.

This is definetely one of the nicest places I ve ever stayed at. The staff is amazingly Friendly, helps you out where they can. The volunteers and the owner will cook and Drink with you in the evenings. The Place is cozy and beautiful, you imediately will feel at home.
Unfortunately it was raining a Lot when I was there, but that was a good Excuse to just stay in Most of the time. :) oh and there is a jacuzzy in the Garden!
I cant wait to Return next Year and See how they changed the Place, as they are planing on doing Lots of organic work in the gardens.

This place is unreal. A fantastic location next to a babbling river and to top things off there is a jacuzzi/hot tub (still not sure what the difference is!). The rooms are clean and the showers are fantastic. We loved Boquete but our stay here was made all the better for staying at this hostel. Considering it is the same price as one hostel in Panama City that was particularly dingy (Mamallena) we couldn't believe our luck. It doesn't even feel like a hostel, more like a nice hotel. Everyone should stay here!

Really nice hostel - I can't imagine there is one for better value around Boquete. Its situated right on a little river, with a hot tub ready for use. The rooms are big, the communal area really nice and a great kitchen allows everyone to cook anything they want. There are plenty of tours to book from the hostel and helpful staff to offer advice.
Its a short walk from town, and well worth it.
There are some nights that they do a pasta night or bbq, but the chef was ill when we were there.

I have traveled extensively through the world staying in one hostel after another and Refugio del Rio is by far, one of the nicest hostels I have been to. The staff are wonderful and accommodating, funny and helpful. The dorm room has it's own bathroom and is really big so even when it's full (there are 11 beds total), you don't feel like you are stuck in a walk-in closet with everyone's luggage all over the place. The kitchen is big as well and there's a wonderful feeling of community here. There are quiche nights and pasta nights during the high season which is a great way to meet fellow travelers and eat dinner together. There is a river next to the house with tables and chairs to enjoy your complimentary coffee in the morning. The best part, though, is the hot tub! Nothing better than relaxing in a hot tub after hiking all day! Do yourself a favor and stay here. You will not regret it. The ambiance, the staff, the river, the hot tub, it's just the best place to be. You won't want to leave.
