The drive from Birkat al Mouz up the mountains takes about 45 minutes to an hour, and must be undertaken in a 4x4. It is a very interesting place to spend a few days. You can take a really interesting walk to the village of Al Ayn and the other roses villages which look beautiful during the rose season. Waid Bani Habib is a rally fascinating place to visit - it is a little tricky to find the steps to the higher village as they are located at the far edge of the lower village behind a house but it is worth it as there are lovely painted interiors and we met a goatherd with about 100 goats!

Spectacular views across the terraces which are stacked up the edge of the mountain, propping up little villages. So very pretty, but wish we could have seen them when the roses and pomegranates are in season!!

The road to Jebel Akhdar OMG unbelievable beautiful.
And once you reached you'll be rewarded with breath taking views. Good place to escape the hectic and heat of the city.

Jebel Akhdar means Green Mountains but in the winter all the fruit trees are bare and the mountain is very brown! The 30 km road up the mountain is one hairpin bend after another and is open only to 4x4 cars. Apparently the reason for allowing only 4x4s is not the going up, but the problem they've had with runaway cars coming down the mountain. The views are spectacular and the village at the top is very pretty, with the Sahab Hotel perched on the edge of the mountain, where one gets a very good lunch served in the garden. The mountain is famous for it's fruit orchards, special roses for making rose water, and nuts, and one looks down on steeply terraced mountainsides covered with trees. Unfortunately our visit was cut short as they were closing the mountain road for the 'Tour of Oman' cycle race so we had to get down, or else stay up there until after 6pm. It gets dark in Oman just after 6. It's definitely a worthwhile trip.

We booked a Green Mountain tour through our hotel (The Chedi).

The guy was friendly. It was a private tour, just for our group.

The drive to get there is long (an hour or so.) On the way up, we stopped in Nizwa and visited the old markets there, which was pretty interesting.

Actually getting up to the mountain involves a long, winding drive. Not much to see as you're surrounded by rocks. Once you get to the top, it's just a plateau with a bit of greenery and shrubs... Let's just say that if you've seen actual mountains (Rockies, Alps, Cedars of Lebanon,) you won't find it very impressive.
