It's almost 2 hrs drive from Muscat and It's definitely worth to visit. We went on Friday, unfortunately missed the famous souks. The fort is open only until 11 am so make sure you will be there before otherwise you won't get in.The fort is very nice with a beautiful view of Nizwa.

An easily accessible significant piece of Oman's history. It's worthing looking up some history info before heading there to get a better picture of what you're visiting.

Whenever I have visitors to Oman I generally try to fit in a visit to Nizwa. The town has a number of interesting places to visit, is a great base for sites in the area and of course the Nizwa Fort. There are many forts throughout Oman and I have several favourites, Nizwa is one of them.

From the 17th century to the present day Nizwa Fort has dominated the town. From the top of its 35 metre tall round tower there are views of the surrounding Hajar Mountains. I love the various angles of the crenellated walls and enjoy glimpses of the dome of Sultan Qaboos Mosque, built at the same time as the Fort and Nizwa town itself. The fort is well signed throughout and is easy, fun and interesting to wander up staircases checking out the defenses from the forts’ past, or to peer into the many rooms to discover what might be there.

Within the Fort is a museum section with an interesting historical display of Oman from a past era. Included are show cases of household items, weaponry, and jewellery; Well worth taking the extra time to visit.

If you are in town for a full morning or longer, go on to explore the Nizwa Souq, the silversmiths, and the centre of town, you might be surprised to find how much more there is to discover in Nizwa.

The Nizwa Fort is one of the places to visit in Nizwa. The nearby Souk is not very impressive but the Fort is OK.
