Going from Dubai passing Ras Al Khaima was easy and without difficulties we did reached the border. FYI: as a resident / expat in UAE you have to pay to exit UAE: AED 35 per person and AED 50 while entering in Oman / coming back you have to ensure that you have the stamp in your passport (exit Oman / arrival in UAE).
Ras Al Khaima - as a city is under construction and if you are not familiar with the city might be a little difficult to find your way towards the border (an easy option: ask a taxi driver to be in front of you / very cheap and not stress or your GPS can be useful).
On the way to Khasab - Bukha village - the is an old fort which can be on your list to visit.

Petrol stations are available and 1/2 price compare with Dubai.

We had a great time while visiting Khasab / Oman. We had a day trip by boat offered by Khasab Tours - for AED 180 per person with lunch and refreshments included (drinks i.e. coffee, tea, water etc). The Crew was very friendly and did a an excellent job. Captain Khaled did his best to cover the entire area showing us the main points of attraction. The weather was excellent (in Dubai was very dusty and foggy) / was a big plus for us going out of Dubai.
We did rent a villa with 3 bedrooms ( 5 adults and 1 child) very good location, clean, with all facilities available (kitchen, every room with shower and toilets etc). Lulu Supermarket is an excellent option for guests who are travelling on budget / next to Khasab Castle (museum - good place to visit).

The mountains - you can use 4x4 to have easy access (however I was able to drive quite a stiff ramp and enjoying the view with a smaller car VW Golf...attention ! do not take unnecessary risks).

Have fun and enjoy the day...

It's best way to take a breath out to the very occidental and business-addicted life in Dubai. It's the right place where get back in contact with the nature.

We took a day tour here, however my companion and a South African family were not allowed to cross the border as this would cancel their existing visas for UAE- so they wouldn't be able to come back. So, if you had to get a visa prior to entering UAE, as opposed to one on arrival you will not be able to go on this trip.
We were on an organised day trip, the tour operator had been told the nationality of the people before the trip and that they had to have a visa for UAE but had not said there would be any problem. So do not rely on the tour operator to tell you. There are no special arrangements to cross the border from Dubai into Mussandam and back for the day. It is the same as completely leaving the country as normal.
I would also advise you to ask your companions on a trip whether they had to get a visa in advance to enter the country. Other people on the trip were delayed about an hour and a half while discussions etc were going on and transport was arranged for them to go back to Dubai.
The place itself is nice and we saw dolphins loads of times, but I think it would be better to visit from Oman-you can fly for cheaper than the transport costs from Dubai - or to stay in Oman and continue your holiday from there, then fly back to wherever you're going to.

We visited Khasab during a cruise in the region. I found Musandam Adventures in tripadvisor. It was a lovely day , the area is very beautiful. The boat is comfortable and the staff was very corteous and respectful. I certainly recomend this atraction. You'll pay 40-50 U$ per person. In the ship they charge you 69 euros . If you are in a group of 15 or more people the boat is private.
I'm not sure if it is worth going from Dubai, it would be a very long day. Might consider spending the night in the city.

If You have seen Dubai malls and been in the desert next place You have to visit is Khasab in Oman
Driving to the Oman border is easy on The great Emirates Road
The border took only 10 min and visa available at the border cost 85 dhs ( 20$ ). No multible visa is needed ( EU citisens)
On the Oman side the road is also good , it is paved between the blue sea and bare rocks
Take about 2,5 hours to Khasab from Dubai.
We booked the tour via Choise Holidays by internet. With them took 45 min to pick up the tree other passengers and we had to wait four days to get the tour. Their service was very good.

In Khasab we entered to a small dhow which could take ab. 30 passegers but we were 10 persons , it means we had good space to lay down on the cushions , to watch dolphins,to take photos and go snorkeling.
We were there in mid Nov. That was good timing because weather and water was warm but not to hot
Next time we will take rent-a-car with Oman insurance . So we could save one - two hours and can see also Khasab old suq which we now missed
Our trip price was 500 dhs (110€). In Khasab You can buy the trip with 150-300 dhs.
