I come here, when I feel poor and hungry. For under $15 you can have a half roast chicken with lemon potatoes, bread and can/glass of soda.
Uncle George is a legend in the neighborhood of Astoria/Long Island City. As soon as you enter the restaurant you can see meat spits turning with a variety of suckling meat and poultry, and Greek TV blasting away Soccer (Football) games in the background. On some days, there are lines to get into the place. Uncle George represents a Greek Taverna, and not a traditional US version of a Greek based restaurant.
The downside of this eatery, is that you can only pay with cash. No credit cards are accepted.
So here are my pros and cons
-Cheap fast Greek foods -most dishes are under $20 per person
-you can try lot's of rare specialties, like rabbit, goat meat etc
-lot's of wines on the menu
-Service is fast and usually friendly
-Menu selections are in Greek and English
- Well situated to nearby subways (N,Q -Broadway) and (M and R -Steinway Street)
-Only takes cash
-Cleanliness is mixed. Sometimes not all the tables are cleaned properly. Toilets are usually okay -can only speak for the toilets for men.
-No butter is served with the bread
-Hot drinks are very limited
-Deserts are not a specialty of this place
Bottom line, come here if you want a real authentic Greek experience.
Uncle George is situated next to Micheal's Restaurant on Broadway an Astoria.
