“Safe but medocre”
Reviewed April 11, 2012

I travel extensively, and have stayed at this hotel several times. The security is good, and the staff friendly, but beyond that, it is very ordinary, and in some respects, very 2nd rate. Do not expect anyone to assist you with your bags ! The power is unstable and on and off perhaps 10 or more times a day. The odd numbered rooms face the road, and neighbouring church, which are very loud until late. The even numbered rooms face the backup generators which are also loud. If you are of French descent, you just may like it, as 6 of 17 or so TV stations are in French, along with a couple of cartoon networks, music video channels, and sports channels. If you like news there is Skynews, CNN at times, and Aljazerra. If you like entertainment there is one movie channel in English, and sometimes Nat Geo channel. The food is the same everyday, with a buffet breakfast, ala carte lunch, and buffet dinner, and the chef's "special" of the day. No particular attention is paid to detail and each meal costly. The hotel has an outside smoking area by the pool, which is a new policy. Being by the ocean and closer to the equator, the weather here is always 30+ deg C. If it wasn't for the company booking rooms here, I would never stay here. Even in the writing of this review, the power and internet connection has been lost twice. Praise the Lord for laptops !

Stayed at this place a few times over the last year while crew changing to go offshore, most time only for one night, but last time I was "stranded" there for 5 nights because of the national fuel strike. Security is very good, all vehicles are security checked on the way in, they even have an airport style security check at the reception, but don't take it too seriously, they check your pockets, make you walk through the metal detector but don't check your baggage, so more for show than anything else.
Food is very good, not cheap, but quality and quantity is excellent and a good choice, you can eat in the bar area or in the restaurant which is adjacent, bar is usually pretty busy and is open from mid morning till 12 midnight.
Rooms are clean and comfortable, pretty much your standard chain type rooms, but these rooms are better than a few other novotels I have stayed at in Europe! each floor has it,s own security guard, and no one can access the lift till you insert your room card which gives you extra piece of mind.
All in all a good place to stay if on business.

This is not exactly a place people come on vacation however it is a place that attracts a lot of business people, and safety is paramount.

This Hotel offers this it has excellent facilities and the staff go out of there way to be helpful and extremely polite and well mannered.

This area is one hell off a security risk to all visitors particularly if you have light skin colouring so it is essential that if you are planning a trip in here that you organise a good security company to take care of you I can recomend Cardinal they will meet you at the airport take you to the hotel and organise all your meetings and venues for you with top of the range 4 X 4 vehicals supported by their own security force accompanyment infront and at the rear.

They will take a lot of the risk out of doing business in this real hot spot right now and the hotel can offer you very good meeting facilities and free internet connections in your room this is however very weather dependent as is every thing else that is either electrical or digital in this region.

One thing you can be sure of your hotel room whilst not the most modern will be spotless and clean and the Food is also of very high quality this is endorsed by the fact that the hotel has been inspected and approved by Air France for their air crews which is always a reassuring sign in Africa.

Advantages: good security, most of it works well, proximity to the Air Force base for flights to Lagos and oil rigs and a pretty good breakfast. But quite honestly is it really worth GBP 175? I think not. The odd numbered rooms look over the main road which means there is constant blaring of sirens as unofficial offical cars try to forec their way through the awful traffic. That side of the hotel there is also a church which has loud music most of the day. So even numbered rooms at the back would be my next choice.

Room Tip: Even numbers...at the back.

The Novohotel was one of the best hotels that I visited during my trip to Nigeria. It has excellent facilities with very good clean rooms. It is very expensive but it is nice to have such a high quality hotel in that part of the world

Having lived and worked in PH for 3 years, this was my first return to PH in over 6 years and was extremely impressed with the Novotel. I only learned of its existence through mates who still work in PH, but travel agents don't seem to know about it.
All other reviews describe the hotel perfectly.
Maybe there are more people staying in the Novotel which is why the pool was very well used and no beds available at the weekends unless you are down early, and ofcourse if you get time off work to relax.
Reception staff were fast and efficient with smiles that cheer up even the grumpiest traveller.
Bar staff were good but it always took ages to get served in the outside terrace restaurant area.
The hotel has introduced a Fast Breakfast consisting of coffee and pastries served in the bar area for only EUR2. Eat and drink as much as you want without having to go into the main restaurant. (pastries are made in the kitchen and taste excellent).
For those that need a big breakfast, there is a good choice from European and Nigerian food choices.
Lunch and Dinner could never be faulted although prices for certain dishes seemd high.
Rooms spotless and beds comfy, only the shower was a little dissapointing having little punch compared to the usual Novotel power showers.
Checkout a breeze.
Sorry Presidential - you will never see me again.

If an expat has to get to Port Harcourt it's for work. Because of the dangerous situation it's not recommended for anything else. A pity. The town seems to have a nice African vibe. This hotel is small but well run and well furbished. Food is good (best beef fillet in West Africa), service is friendly and efficient, and the rooms are comfortable well furbished above average Novotel type rooms. A pleasant place to stay. The best run hotel in Nigeria I've been in.
