We booked this as part of a package, and were not disappointed with this hotel. Less than 3 minutes walk to the Baie de Kuto - a mile of sand like silk running through your fingers. Our plane left mid afternoon, and we were given fresh towels and a place to shower (even though it could have done with a bit of a clean!) which we appreciated after having spent the morning on the sand. Didn’t try the restaurant, but the breakfast was pretty good – mainly due to the fresh fruit and the stunning view. We had a room on the ground floor, as we wanted to sit on the patio.

Room Tip: Ground floor for a patio.

Kou Bugny has clean, fine rooms, but is let down by a fairly average restaurant. Breakfast buffet is limited and restaurant is expensive for fairly average meals. Its advertised activities (aqua bike, kayak) were not available. Wifi didn't work.

The cruise ships that stop can also make or break your trip, as the beach and bar at Kou Bugny is overun by tourists. We had 3 cruise ships in the first 3 days (not so fun) and then none for the next 3 days (much better!).

Some of the reception staff very helpful and the driver was great in taking us to the doctor in Vao when one of us go sick. Although some of the reception staff were less friendly.

Overall though, you are probably better of staying at Oure Tera Hotel if you can afford it. As its nearby, we spent a bit of time at Oure Tera for lunch/dinner and generally seemed much nicer and better options for food, nicer hotel and more activities.

Room Tip: Go for the first floor rooms, rather than the downstairs 'garden' rooms. They are cheaper an...

We stayed at Kou Bugny when our youngest daughter was only a few months old in 2003. we came back this year in November 2012 for a week with our 3 children. The hotel did not disappoint. It has not changed much, but has been carefully maintained. The Bungalow Famille which can accomodate 6 persons are cute, functional and cosy. There are not luxurious, but they are confortable and in the Pacific when you ask for luxury you lose the feeling of the place. Right across a wonderful beach, with private patios, in the middle of a nice sprawling exotic garden. The food is good but it never changes and it gets boring but you can go a few minutes walk away and find other restaurants a other accommodation. The only real pity is that breakfast is served indoor hail, rain or shine.

Room Tip: The Bungalow Famille are great with 4 beds in the mezzanine.

This hotel is a place to get away from it all: the setting is idyllic, right beside a long, long beach with white sands and a calm, turquoise lagoon. We had a bungalow suite consisting of a lounge area, a comfy double room, shower room, separate WC, a further 4 single beds on the mezzanine and a small terrace with tables and chairs outside. The bungalow was comfortable enough - though some of the fittings were a little worse for wear - with a TV (old), small fridge (no “mini-bar”), kettle with tea and coffee facilities and private strongbox. But air con in the main bedroom only (it can get hot on the mezzanine), no iron & board or hair-dryer, and Internet access is not free - about €5 for 2 hours.
On arrival, there was no hot water. This was “fixed” immediately but was intermittent after that. We were the last bungalow in the line – was that the reason?
The grounds are attractively laid out, with interesting Kanak features. The “swimming pool” is too small to talk about, but then with the sea so close …
The hotel restaurant is right on the beach, across the road (very little traffic), with a pleasant terrace for aperitifs and dining, and also an enclosed dining area, all of this overlooking the bay. Contrary to some reports, we had a very good meal there. Breakfast is buffet-style and quite good. Sandwiches can be purchased from the bar. The restaurant and bar service was a little chaotic when we were there - the staff didn’t seem to be able to cope with the influx at meal/aperitif time.
This is a review of the hotel, so no comments on the island itself except to say it is a paradise!
But life is slow and laid-back here. Don’t expect full 3-star levels of comfort and service.

This hotel is where you want to stay. You have two beautiful beaches at only a short stroll and you have the walk to pic N'ga starting 1km from the hotel. That summit will give you a wonderful panorama of almost the entire island.
The rooms have been recently refurbished and are massive in size. The breakfast is included and has it all. The restaurant/bar has a great view overlooking the bay.

We had friends staying at the Meridien at the same time and they agreed Kou-Bougny is a better location and your room is closer to the beach. The beach was wonderful and so much of it you could always find a spot under a shady tree well away from anyone else. I agree with most reviewers that the food is disappointing and there is not a lot of choice. We found the store with in walking distance towards the airport and made picnic lunches. We also had a dinner Oure Hotel - if you have a torch you can walk there along the beach. We hired a car from the hotel for one day - that's all you need to see the island. If you are quick and like seafood the weekend buffet might be good for you but I preferred the al la cart menu. Take some wine and snacks so you can sit about in the evening and enjoy the sunset. I don;t think you can buy wine or beer on the island - well we didn't find any - so drinks are bar prices. We got a free night's accommodation so it balanced out the cost of the meals.

We spent four days here, and loved it. The hotel is located on an isthmus between the beautiful baie de kuto and the bay de kanemera. The hotel is immactulately clean and very well run. The staff are helpful and efficient. Our "standard" tropical room was light and airey and beautifully furnished. The bedding matches the art work on the wall etc and every thing is suitably chic. The resaurant over looks a beach with some of the whitest sand and beautiful turqouise water I have ever seen. While not for budget travlers, we thought it was good value when you consider the facilities, service and remote location. In the restaurant, excpect to pay about Auckland prices or a little more - we had snails, lobster and creme brule, for special anniversary dinner and it was simply devine. There is a bakery and small general store a short walk away, if you want to buy lunch or snacks. One night we had a picnic on the beach. The hotel also rent you cars at a very reasonable rate for a half day (8am until 2pm) - which is about all you need to drive around the island. The hotel is also handily located close to where the Betico ferry arrives twice per week - although the hotel meet you with a coach. Would stay there again in a heart beat!

Room Tip: We thought the tropical room - the cheapest was the nicest. It has high ceilings and sky lights. The...
