“Perfect Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

We had friends staying at the Meridien at the same time and they agreed Kou-Bougny is a better location and your room is closer to the beach. The beach was wonderful and so much of it you could always find a spot under a shady tree well away from anyone else. I agree with most reviewers that the food is disappointing and there is not a lot of choice. We found the store with in walking distance towards the airport and made picnic lunches. We also had a dinner Oure Hotel - if you have a torch you can walk there along the beach. We hired a car from the hotel for one day - that's all you need to see the island. If you are quick and like seafood the weekend buffet might be good for you but I preferred the al la cart menu. Take some wine and snacks so you can sit about in the evening and enjoy the sunset. I don;t think you can buy wine or beer on the island - well we didn't find any - so drinks are bar prices. We got a free night's accommodation so it balanced out the cost of the meals.

We spent four days here, and loved it. The hotel is located on an isthmus between the beautiful baie de kuto and the bay de kanemera. The hotel is immactulately clean and very well run. The staff are helpful and efficient. Our "standard" tropical room was light and airey and beautifully furnished. The bedding matches the art work on the wall etc and every thing is suitably chic. The resaurant over looks a beach with some of the whitest sand and beautiful turqouise water I have ever seen. While not for budget travlers, we thought it was good value when you consider the facilities, service and remote location. In the restaurant, excpect to pay about Auckland prices or a little more - we had snails, lobster and creme brule, for special anniversary dinner and it was simply devine. There is a bakery and small general store a short walk away, if you want to buy lunch or snacks. One night we had a picnic on the beach. The hotel also rent you cars at a very reasonable rate for a half day (8am until 2pm) - which is about all you need to drive around the island. The hotel is also handily located close to where the Betico ferry arrives twice per week - although the hotel meet you with a coach. Would stay there again in a heart beat!

Room Tip: We thought the tropical room - the cheapest was the nicest. It has high ceilings and sky lights. The...

Pros
The location is excellent between Kuto and Kanumera Bays.
Rooms were decent, good AC and set in well kept grounds.
There is wi-fi service available in common areas - though pricey and quite difficult to set (needs a local cell phone number though the staff were very helpful and used theirs)

Cons
Expensive, though relatively cheap for Iles des Pins !
Staff attitudes were mixed, particularly at reception - our lack of French being a contributing factor !
The main failing is the quality of the food.
The included breakfast was poor other than the croissants & danish which we lived on!! Coffee was also bad.
Limited menus for lunch and dinner, the latter of which is priced similarly to the Les Meridien where we had a great meal.

You have to have money to come here..the rates are overpriced. Make sure you have cash, no Credit cards facility. The Taxi charges close to 4000F per trip but he knows the Island and were on time., and could speak english. The rooms in the hotel Kou-Bugny were small but clean. The bed has wood around and we ended up with blue bumps. The roof slides open and the beds were clean and comfortable. TV, Air Con, and big windows overlooking a beautiful garden. You make your own coffee and make sure you bring a hairdryer if needed to. There is a little fridge in the room, so bring your wine etc for beautiful sunrise and sunsets. We had a welcoming drink at reception and the staff were friendly. We had Lobsters on the beach at Kou-gny at a price that schocks 6000F per lobster. It was overcooked but the staff were very friendly. The white sands are soft and the beaches were clean. The locals are friendly and they have beautiful little houses decorated with shells. The natural pool on Baie d'Oro is a must see. The fish swims with you and the water is crystal clear, so the most awesome colorful clams is beautiful. I walked to the reef at low tide and took spectacular photos of waves braking over the most amazing rocks. Back at the hotel we had dinner at the restuaranton the beach but the Buffet were poor with one meat dish, pumpkin and shrimps, a few salads and one fish that everyone could scratch into. Very overpriced and not worth it. Breakfast was also poor with limited dishes and the service were slow to fill the 3 warm items. If you are early you might get enough food. The staff were friendly and everything were clean. A beautiful but overpriced place.

Room Tip: The top floor of the rooms are better or a bungalow in the garden

English:
- The location is excellent between Kuto Bay and Kanumera Bay. Kuto Bay being a nice white sandy beach and Kanumera Bay being an excellent snorkeling place.
- The room (in our case a Deluxe Room) being spacy, bright and clean.
- There is a wifi service available at the reception or at the bar/restaurant (which is on the beach). 2 hours cost 650 XPF.
- You can also easily rent a car (Renault Clio) from the Hotel for a 6000 XPF a day (gas included, but as the island is quite small you will not need that much of it anyway)

The only point that disappointed me a little bit was the range of choices on the restaurant menu. Only 4 starters (all costing 1900 XPF) and 5 main dishes (costing 2900 XPF except for "Langoustes grillées" which was priced 5250 XPF), but all nice. I could recommend to go to the Oure Lodge's (A 4* hotel on Kanumera beach) restaurant which has more variety for same price if you stay longer than 2 nights.

Definitely a good value!

Francais:

We toured New Caledonia, and after staying on Le Escapade Island we came to Isle of Pines unsure what to expect....it is a magical Island.

We stayed in a Comfort Bungalow, bit run down, had a little patio setting you could sit around outside, but the bungalow wasn't that inviting to sit around in. It was however big, and comfortable for us to sleep.

Hot tips:
*Hire a car on isle of Pines...it's about $60 AUD for the day - get over to Oro Bay and snorkel the natural pool - this place is the best snorkelling i've ever expereienced.

*Find a convienience store on the island - we found about 3...called "alimentation" in french...but these stock the best freshly baked baguettes, good quality ham, and has all the other little things you may need...it's not coles or woolies - but seriously it's such a remote place these stores will make your picnics on the beach eventuate! Plus it'll save you money as there is only hotels to eat at really.

*Learn some french - I think we bumed into one other aussie couple in the 3 days we were there - which was so refreshing after being to Thailand, Bali and mainland New Caledonia. You'll really enjoy it.

*Hotel Kodjue in the north east coast has a dodgy looking - but great restauraunt....go there for lobster.

*Before you leave new Caledonia for the trip to isle of Pines - go to a supermarket and grab a few bottles of wine/beer, some cheeses for sunset drinks and nibbles on the beach!

It really is a magical place. You'll love it, the people are very friendly - oh and if you do by chance end up walking somewhere - don't be affraid to stick the finger out and hitch hike - the first car will pick you up!

And the staff at hotel kou bugny are very friendly! Not sure what the hotel rooms were like, but maybe to save some bucks get one of them as really you won't be in the room that often as the island is way to beautiful.

Room Tip: Try the hotel rooms - we had a comfort bungalow - big yes, but a bit run down - you won't be in...

This was the highlight of our trip to New Caledonia. Ile DES pins will hold a special place in my heart - and hotel kou bugny enhanced the memories. Excellent service. Beautiful but small rooms. Fabulous beach frontage to the restaurant. Make sure you can speak some French - we found it a little hard as we have very little. Champagne at the bar at sunset is stunning! Well worth the small fortune we paid. Will cherish the memories forever!
