Whilst working on a horse back safari company in South Africa, 18 years ago, I first heard about The Wild Horses of Namibia and it became a dream of mine to come and see them, on a previous visit to Namibia I realised time limit and distance were not in my favour. Dayne Braine was my guide to the Desert Elephants so I contacted him to see if he could assist me with in a bespoke safari to the South of Namibia, taking in Sossusvlei, Wild Horses, Kolmanscop, Ludderitz, Fish River Canyon and the Quiver Tree Forest and Giants Playground.

Batis Birding Safari and the Braine Family as a whole have surpassed my expectations, minute care and attention to detail whilst organising to cover my itinerary requests and special dietary requirements, I have returned triumphant a dream realised and a new wish list for the future; Etosha and Caprivi.

Sean Braine as my guide, was brilliant, he has an amazing encyclopaedic knowledge of birds as well as a creative eye and technical understanding to assist in developing my personal interest in photography, he was amusing interesting enthusiastic and extremely patient with answering my random questions on diverse subjects from mammals, history, landscape, geography to are we nearly there yet!! I have even purchased a bird guide in preparation for my next visit and I am not waiting 18 years to fulfil this one.

I cannot recommend Batis Birding Safaris and the Braine Family more highly and do not hesitate in recommending them for anyone considering a specific safari to Namibia whether it be birds, wildlife, general interest and photography, Batis Birding, Steve and Louise, Sean and Dayne Braine love what they do and I must say they all do it exceptionally well. thank you very much indeed and I look forward to my two week Etosha and Caprivi adventure.

Thank Becky H

We spent a whole day with Steve Braine (Batis birding) in the desert around Swakopmund, and even though expensive (by Namibian standards) it was worth every penny. We started in the morning with small animals of the desert, we saw the Dune gecko, the sidewinder snake, shovel-snouted lizard, the spider , burrowing skink, chameleon, scorpion etc. and lots of interesting plants and birds. We had lunch in Swakop (included) then went for a long trip looking for plants. Steve is not only one of the best birders, but turned out to be seriously good at plants too, despite claiming to be rusty he managed the latin names of most of the plants we saw. Steve wasn’t satisfied with just showing us welwitschia, but he made sure we were in a lovely place, and the plants were in flower, an absolutely super experience. We saw lots and lots of nice plants, and even though Steve said he was sorry we only saw a couple of birds, when we started counting them up, it was more than a dozen, and that was without looking for them. So highly recommended!

I’ve wanted to go to Namibia for many years, and when the opportunity presented itself, it was a mere two weeks before my departure date. I was referred to Batis Birding Safaris by a close friend in the travel business, so I contacted them immediately. Working with Louise was a dream, and she along with her son, Dayne, organized a fabulous safari for my friend and me. They were both very responsive, accommodating, gave excellent advice and adjusted our itinerary as requested. When we arrived at the Windhoek airport, Dayne was there to meet us. Right from the start he was personable and welcoming, and over the course of the following nine days, I knew we were with the best. Dayne's knowledge of the landscape, animals, birds, way of life in Namibia, etc. was extensive. Anytime I had a question for him, he could answer it. He was flexible, thorough, kept us on track without rushing us and ensured that we were always happy with our accommodations and itinerary. We absolutely were! Because it was the rainy season, it was more difficult to find animals due to water being more abundant. Dayne knew where to go to find the animals, and he worked hard to ensure we saw as many as we could. Plus, he is an excellent photographer! I cannot sing the praises of Batis Birding highly enough. The trip was beyond any expectations I had and made it very hard to leave this wonderful country. Thank you Louise and Dayne for making my trip so perfect.

This was such a great experience! My husband and I were met by Steve Braine at our hotel and taken to the desert for a four-hour tour. Steve was incredibly friendly and amazingly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the desert. We were fascinated with the wealth of knowledge that he imparted. The desert scenery was absolutely magnificent and we were also able to see some of the animals that survive in such arid conditions. We were able to observe a chameleon. Steve also dug-out a multi-hued gecko for us. Once we had finished observing it, he carefully helped the gecko burrow back into the sand and then covered the hole to protect it from predators. After the fog had dissipated, the lizards came out to catch the rays of sun and warm themselves. At the end of the tour, we were able to watch flamingos in a nearby lake. We would love to go back to Namibia and do a birding trip with Steve!
