“Gracious hotel in the heart Namibia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2014

The Hansa Hotel is likely the nicest hotel in this German town locate on the coast of Namibia. It is in the heart of town withing easy walking of the seashore, the local museum, some interesting shops and a variety of restaurants (although the hotel has an excellent restaurant as well). After enjoying a variety of safari camps and lodges it was very pleasant to have a very comfortable bed in a exceptionally quiet room (most rooms face onto an inner courtyard). Free WiFi was only available in the lobby area and a few rooms nearby (for some reason it could not be accessed in the hotel lounge).

Room Tip: Rooms on the courtyard are quietest but all rooms were good

This is a very nice, comfortable, German style hotel in Swakopmund.

Pros:
1) Very clean and well run. The management is professional and reliable.
2) Excellent location. From here you can walk to anywhere in Swapkomund. There are many good restaurants within 5 minutes. There are also some great art galleries around the corner.
3) The hotel is quiet at night, so you can open the windows and enjoy the ocean breeze.
4) Breakfast is a buffet and is plentiful, healthy, and tasty.

Cons:
1) Hotel is fairly dark and uninviting from an aesthetic perspective. This is not a big knock against it. Just a subtle point.
2) Rooms are small and sterile. By sterile I mean, they are very plain. The sheets, colors, and furniture offer very little in the way of style or flare.
3) Lunch and dinner are not particularly tasty. The food is decent, but there are better options within town. The food is a meat and potatoes style, which may appeal to some. When traveling I am looking for a little more pizzaz in my cuisine.

Overall, the hotel is a nice place to stay and reasonable value. The location is the best feature of the hotel, because you can walk anywhere in the city. Even at night you can walk down to the water and go for a beach walk, which I highly recommend after dinner.

This hotel is a very good place to stay in Swakopmund. It is in very good conditions. The rooms as well suits are great. If you walk through the hotel it has the positive flair of the past. When you arrive they offer you a glas of champagne. The service is very good. Breakfast is very good. I would also recommend to have dinner. It is a great kitchen and a good variety of food.

Room Tip: Take a Suite. It is worth.

This hotel is situated in the heart of town and it is quite large for this town (perhaps the largest?). Breakfast was a buffet and crowded with several tour groups which made it very hectic. Dinner was great, although at least one tour group was there as well.

We booked The Hansa for two nights (Fri and Sat) without knowing much except that it is the oldest hotel in Swakopmund and in the centre of the old town. Also, we made a quick decision to book because we were worried we'd not get accommodation in Swakopmund over a weekend. So how wonderful it was to have had the most outstanding experience staying here.

The lovely Gabriella at reception made us feel welcome and helped us with our booking at The Tug restaurant (which was was okay btw, nothing special). Whenever we walked through reception, Gabriella was friendly and appeared genuinely happy to see us!

We ate in the hotel's restaurant on the second night, and what a treat! As vegetarians we were made to feel that nothing was too much trouble in catering to our needs. In fact, it felt that vegetarians were made to feel special, just like any other diner, and not like a second-class citizen as was our experience at most other places in Namibia. The food was delicious and the service outstanding.

The restaurant opens out into the lobby so the hotel feels very lively.

Breakfast was also served in the restaurant. The pastry chef could improve his offerings - croissants were hard on both days, cake and bread not great. But all else was good. And lovely atmosphere.

Our bedroom was wonderful, best bedroom we've had on our Namibia trip. Spacious, comfortable, cheerful, comfortable mattress. Only downside is that it opened onto the street above the hotel entrance, and while Swakopmund is a very quiet town (I was surprised! I was expecting a party town, but it is very sleepy) there was noise at 5am when people were leaving the hotel, and it was not pleasant when someone smoked on the pavement below our room. But smoking is rife everywhere in Namibia, and in this hotel you may smoke in the lobby and bar, not in the restaurant, but in all other public areas. Quite unbelievable, it seems that smoking laws have not caught on in Namibia.

We absolutely loved The Hansa. It has old-world charm and amazing service. I would go back to Swakopmund just to experience this hotel again!

Room Tip: Our room opened onto the pavement above the hotel entrance. Can be noisy in the early morning when t...

I lead a group to this hotel and all was first rate. Very well organized, personable front desk staff and the rooms are clean, spacious and homey since the open up to a nice central courtyard. We walked down to the pier but when we couldn't get in to the restaurant we wanted, we called and asked for a ride back. We were surprised when the driver wouldn't accept a tip.....and we found out he was the manager. He also made sure we were able to squeeze into his fully booked restaurant. note to all: this is a town where reservations are highly recommended.
