While at Swakopmund, we wanted to do a couple of activities that involved the dunes just outside the town. We were guided to Desert Explorers for quad biking & sand boarding. They offer various combos of both activities, but eventually we decided to just do the quads for 2 hours-$N500 each for an individual quad & N$250 for riding along with a guide(seated behind).
After being briefed on safety & the rules by our lead guide, Martin, we were off. Initially we were a group of 12 adults & our 2 boys aged 9 & 10 years old, with 4 guides. Both boys decided very quickly that they needed to be seated behind a guide(I was happy because really the quads are very heavy machines & need some amount of strength to drive, specially on the higher dunes), so they switched bikes & off we went again. It was an unreal feeling driving up & down the dunes, at those incredible speeds & in that cold. We stopped only twice, once to take in the views, & once when another rider flipped off her quad & apparently injured her foot. The 3rd guide took her & her group back to the base, and the rest of us continued on. I dont think it was a reflection of their equipment, but rather, just an unfortunate incident.
The dunes are beautiful & the adrenaline rush that you get makes the 2 hours fly by. We always felt very safe & the guides appeared very experienced. Its quite an amazing experience standng at the top of the dunes, with the wind rushing by & taking in the beauty that surrounds you. Then off you go again, driving up & down the dunes & taking in the beauty as you go!
For N$1500, it was well worth it. We later saw a sign at the shop that mentioned that Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie had come several times while in Namibia- the couple stayed in nearby Walvis Bay when their daughter Shiloh was born there in 2006. That endoresement should speak for itself!;)
It was a great experience. We skipped the sand boarding because that would have taken a whole morning seperately(arrived in Swakopmund too late to do the combo either). If you want experienced guides, an adrenaline rush & great photo opportunities, this is the place to go to for your quad riding. It was N$1500 for the 4 of us. They take cash, credit cards, Namibian & South African currency.
