“Nice Hostel with garden”
Reviewed December 6, 2012

Good location, only 5-10 minutes walk into town centre with restaurants and bars.
The hostel consists of several buildings with a green garden. There are also showers outside which are really nice.
Stayed in a 4 bed dorm which was a small room, but beds are comfortable etc.
Toilets were clean.

Unfortunately the camping sites (camping in the garden) cost almost as much as staying in a dorm room. Therefore we changed hostel when arriving with a camping equipped car.

Thanks for the very nice write-up you gave of Desert Sky. If you camp you do not pay for your car, tent or bed, you pay for the facilities. Both camping and dorms use, water, electricity, toiletpaper, free coffee and tea, TV etc. and all the cleaning. That is why there is only N$20.00 differance between camping and dorm beds. Hope this info will help? Warm Regards, Betsy

We looved Swakopmund and Desert Sky was a great place to stay. Close to the ocean, and not a far walk from restaurants, bars, groceries, and any other sights in Swakopmund. We camped for a few nights, and the staff and owners were nice enough to lend us some mattresses to sleep on and more blankets (It was cold! we did not have enough warm things). We rented a car to go up Skeleton Coast and the owners leant us the warm blankets to take with us as we were camping along the way. So considerate of them! Thank you! The self catering kitchen is fantastic, there is a small fire pit... need to get some better fire wood! The showers and toilets are clean and decent. The dorms (two of us stayed in for one night) are also very clean and crisp. Reception is helpful with planning any activities, we did horseback riding and skydiving and they assisted with organizing pick ups etc.
One disappointment is the 50 Namibian Dollar charge if you want to stick around longer than the checkout time the day that you are leaving...seems incredibly unnecessary and frustrating as no other backpackers/hostel accommodation has this fee.... seemed confusing.
Otherwise fantastic place! Would recommend to anyone travelling through swakopmund on a budget.

Good spot in Swakopmund to continue self-drive trip north. Simple rooms, perfect location so you can walk to the beach, the grocery store, and loads of restaurants, and nice area to make breakfast. We were only there for a short stay so we might have enjoyed it more if we got to spend time with others staying over, but everyone we met was friendly and similarly young.

Basic accommodation, but completely sufficient. Good, well equipped kitchen. The lady running the place was very helpful in arranging activities. Recommended.

We stayed 3 nights there.
We loved this so friendly and well managed place.

The staff did all the possible to arrange our activities also.
The rooms were nice, we spent the first one with the double shared bathroom (390N), then with private bathroom (440N).
The quality and the service are very good for the price.

No internet but shared kitchen with all the furniture and a large fridge.

The garden is very nice, there are people camping also, with a shared kitchen, barbecue place, that make a very nice exchange place

We booked a double but got bumped up to the family room, don't know what the doubles are like but our room was beautiful. The bed and duvet were nicer than the ones we have at home! The shower was fantastic, everything was clean. There's two communal kitchens, lots of braai's so we cooked for ourselves each night. There's secure on site parking, and you can even camp on the grounds but frankly for the cost difference we were happy we booked a room. In mid november we had 60kph winds all three days, it was at most 5-10C at night, and every day we came home covered in sand. It's about three blocks from the edge of the desert and three blocks from the center of town and three blocks from the ocean and boardwalk. Perfect location.

Only gripe is there is no internet, you have to go to an internet cafe about 4 blocks away in the shopping area so it isn't so bad, you'll be going there anyways to get groceries, etc.. just be careful at night, even at sunset, the streets get pretty empty.. I went to the ATM and 3 people followed me, I cancelled and pulled my card out. Can never be too careful. We had a VW Polo, no problem on the roads.

We arrived late afternoon in Swakopmund and had time to drive around looking for a room. We looked at most of the places in town and Desert Sky was head and shoulders above the rest. The receptionist while busy, went out of her way to show us the amenities and what was available. We ended up in a family room which was spacious, nicely decorated and very clean. Crisp clean sheets on a very comfy bed added to the positive impression. Our room was in a four bedroom house and had bath and kitchen shared with the other rooms. Another bathroom was available in the camping area a few steps from the house. The kitchen was well equipped and very clean. The bathroom had one of the best showers we found in three months across Africa. The house had a nice lounge area and dining room. The rest of the grounds were clean and attractive. Camping area was grass and there were also ensuite rooms. Location was a few blocks from shops, restaurants and bars. As a bonus, price was one of the best in town. I highly recommend the place for just about anyone.
