Starting out as a small beachfront restaurant on the edge of the wild and mystical Atlantic Ocean, with splendid views onto the iconic Swakopmund jetty, The Tug's popularity has grown as time moved on. Dining areas inside and on the outside deck terrace have been extended considerably, while the restaurant has become a culinary destination for travelers from around the globe. The Tug restaurant offers authentically prepared cocktails, a selection of more than 140 of the finest South African wines, French champagne. Special delights from the wild Namibian ocean include kingklip, kabeljou, lobsters, angel fish and sole, John Dory, local oysters, fresh green Swakopmund asparagus. The richly diverse menu includes stuffed Patagonian squid, prawns, Norwegian salmon, Sashimi tuna. For the carnivore there are tasty cuts of beef and tender lamb, in addition to game delicacies such as Oryx carpaccio or grilled Oryx steak, Surf & Turf. There is a wide selection for the vegetarian and our delicious homemade Spanakopita is a favorite. Both owner partners George Hopking and Brett Southworth believe that no successful establishment should rely solely on its popularity. They engage in consistent attention to quality and freshness of their products, as well as continuous training and motivation of their staff, in order to provide the customer with decent service and an extensive menu and wine list.

“Perfectly fine but unremarkable”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

'You must visit The Tug restaurant in Swakopmund', everyone told us. It's the best in town. So we booked a table for a Tuesday night in June during our Namibian road trip. The place was heaving with some people turned away. It is situated virtually on the beach by the jetty and our table overlooked the waves as they crashed into the beach. The menu was seafood orientated as you would expect with meat and salad options also available. I had fish soup to start. It was tasty but unremarkable and the same was true of my seafood kebab served on a bed of rice with roasted vegetables. It was perfectly nice but nothing special. My wife and 20-year-old son felt the same about their dishes. It was reasonably priced and the service was ok if a little frantic given the 'full house'. I would give this place somewhere between 'average' and 'good' on my Trip Advisor ratings - but others may see it differently. It definitely deserves a try - then you can make your own mind up. But don"t go here expecting cultured Namibian cuisine....

“Mmmmm”
Reviewed July 15, 2014 via mobile

The Tug has received an impressive number of appraisals from the TA community and they are all well-deserved. We were here on a foggy, cold July evening the heater conveniently placed next to our table was highly appreciated.

All though sea food is The Tug speciality, I chose lamb shank on this cold evening. The meat was tender and almost melted on my tongue. My dinner companions had nothing but positive comments about their meals either.

The service was friendly, professional and efficient and there was no problem splitting the bills between our party of six.

Make sure to have dinner at The Tug when you're in Swakopmund - I'm sure you will not forget it.

“Great food and service”
Reviewed July 15, 2014

Our second visit to Swakopmund and first to The Tug. We booked as this is essential, the restaurant was fully booked on our previous visit in 2007. I had read the reviews on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. Our 6 year old loved the idea we were eating in an old tug. I must mention our waitress Niipindi, she was great! Very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Awesome setting, great menu and probably the best sole I have had in a long time! We will definitely recommend that this venue not be missed. Hope to be back in the not too distant future.

“Fantastic setting above the waves”
Reviewed July 14, 2014

When booking this restaurant - and you have to book - make sure you get a window seat. It feels like you are above the waves which are lit up at night. From pre-drinks at the bar to our last sip of after dinner liqueur, this was a great experience. All the food that we ordered, was excellent. The service was efficient and friendly and the prices reasonable. Will certainly recommend The Tug to anyone visiting Swakop.
