What a house! Chock-a-bloc with art collected from all over the world; this four-storey home is a dream for anyone looking to stay in the heart of Essaouira. Lapped by the ocean - you can have dramatic sea views from your bed; breakfast on the terrace with seagulls swooping above and kids will love the mezzanine beds and amazing Moroccan bath. Couldn't recommend this place more, and the hosts John and Charles are wonderfully kind as well as being fountains of knowledge on everything to see, eat, and experience in the area. Thumbs up.
This is a quite special house, with an interesting set-up, furniture, decoration, and fascinating to watch the sea splashing on the house at high tide! We stayed 3 adults and 3 children in the house, and Charles and John made sure that we had just what we needed, and were quick at responding at whatever request we may have. Simple things like fruits and coffee, salt and oil in the kitchen, soap for the dishwasher and the washing machine, do make your stay easy and pleasant. And Essaouira is a lovely city. The house is very close to the market where one finds everything. Being within the old city was a very nice experience.
Thank you Charles and John for making this such a pleasant stay!
This was our second trip to Essaouira with the kids and we couldn't book the house we rented last year. So glad! Dar Evening Star is a beautiful property, in a great location. Tastefully furnished in a really eclectic style, every day we would spot some new detail in a picture or a photo, a sculpture or a piece of furniture we'd previously missed. It really is just a pleasure to be in the house, which is both comfortable and quirky.
The board games, magazines, and beach equipment were also a welcome addition.
The kitchen is a great size and really well equipped - we've stayed in Morocco many many times and never had a dishwasher or laundry room at our disposal! So useful.
But far and away the most exceptional thing about the house, which it itself exceptional, are its hosts. John and Chip are charming and knowledgeable and generous and kind. For us they walked the perfect balance between being available and attentive and leaving us to our own devices.
Sincerely hope Easyjet keep flying to Essaouira from Luton - we want to return to Dar Evening Star and have already recommended it to our friends!
On our recent trip to Morocco, only because a friend urged us,We visited Essaouira.
He also told us that we had to reserve at Dar Evening Star on the ocean. I can break
Our visit down into three categories:
2)Art and Architecture
3) An experience of the ocean from Dar Evening Star
There wasn’t anything that John and Charles( the owners and creators of Dar Evening Star) wouldn’t have done for us.Transport to/from Marrakech Airport,a rental car,a very special side trip to a Berber Village, a vineyard and an argan cooperative were all day trips that they arranged for us. They were on hand for a minitour of Essaouira and they met us upon arrival at the entrance to Essaouira’s medina.
Regarding Art and Architecture:
Dar Evening Star was an 1850’s bakery. After a number of years they magically transformed it into a seaside villa with literally the ocean crashing against it...Very large windows everywhere...several ocean levels with terraces..the house is filled with art and furniture from their travels around the world, all of this in immaculate, spacious, surroundings, for an incredible value.
Regarding a new experience of the Ocean:
Once inside the house, you would never know that you were in the center of life in Essaouira’s busy medina. We rose to the sound of the ocean, witnessed daily sunsets over the sea from the rampart terraces and found it so conducive to rest and work that we had to bring with us.
I highly encourage anyone who will be near Essaouira to make Dar Evening Star an exclusive destination...We can’t wait to return!
Back in Morocco...We were determined to return to Essaouira, for my Dar Evening Star experience.. Featured recently in Maisons du Maroc, an important architectural magazine, with 12 beautiful pages, I was reminded that this is a house unique in all of Essaouira...
For my arrival , as before,John and Charles sent a car to Marrakech for us and met us at the gate to the pedestrian medina and walked us thru the now familiar lanes to Dar Evening Star. The table was set with fresh bread, butter, jams, cheeses, pastries and water. As was the case in the past, the house was completely stocked with coffee, tea, paper products, shampoos, bath foams plus endlss amenities..including housekeeping..this time in addition to their special testaurants, John arranged a 4 day desert trip to Metzouga, the high dunes of the Sahara.Youssef,an Essaouira local was born and raised in the Sahara. He carefully guided us thru villages and caves where we had dinners, slept in Bedouin tents and we finally arrived at Erg Chebbi, The "Lawrence of Arabia" dunes of The Sahara. It was a spectacular experience...back in Essaouira, John took us on a mini tour of workshops and factories that produce many of the local handicrafts...The tranquility and the ocean terraces, sunshine and incomparable views of the sea provided us with not only a 5 star experience but the 5 star rest we so sorely need..we can't wait to return and we will!
What a magical place, from the word go it was amazing! We were picked up from the airport and taken to the walled gates of Essaouira, where we were greeted by John and Chip. On our first full day they took us on a tour of the walled city where John guided us around, highlighting shops, restaurants and hotspots. Our hosts were flawless, they would do anything to make our trip more enjoyable and really took the time to know us and ensure our first visit to Dar Evening Star was unforgettable.
The home itself is remarkable. Handsomely furnished. Blissfully peaceful. Generously outfitted. Our hosts paid remarkable attention to every detail. Over a lifetime of globe-trotting, we've never felt more at home away from home.
We were picked up at the edge of the medina by John and Charles. The house is spacious and the view over the sea is beautiful. John and Charles can tell you extensively about all the items in the house.
Unfortunately we could not sit on the roof terrace because of the loud wind. In the house you do not suffer from it. John and Charles are very helpful: they gave us a tour of Essaouira and get ready for you if you need something. We would love to come back again!
