An oasis calm and civilisation in a crazy place!

Review of Maison Du Sud
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 10, 2011
Accommodation in Maison du Sud was included in the photographic holiday I booked with Darren Lewey of Essaouira Images (http://www.essaouiraimages.com), so was not my own choice. However, I could not have chosen a lovelier place to stay. My first impressions of the place took my breath away - what a beautiful hotel.

Throughout my one week stay, my impressions were proved to be justified. Sa'id, Brahim and all the staff were courteous and accommodating, doing all they could to make me feel at home and I was genuinely sad to say goodbye at the end of my stay.

I have stayed in many hotels and guest houses all over the world and Maison du Sud is the latest entry to my top 10.

Great place that makes you feel at home in a very tasteful decorated building. Very friendly staff. Walking out the door you step into the center of the incredibly nice carfree (!) village.

I have just returned from a fantastic week staying at this wonderful riad, whilst on a photography course run by Darren Lewey, of Essaouria Images. Maison du Sud is situated in the heart of the medina, close to everything. It oozes character and has an abundance of Moroccan charm! Lovely courtyards, seating areas and sunny roof terrace. Don't come expecting all mod/cons (a/c, tv etc) but this is all part of the experience, as is the morning prayer call. The rooms are cosy and the beds extremely comfortable. The staff are outstanding - friendly, attentive and helpful. The photographic opportunities in Essaouria are outstanding. Darren is a great teacher who organises workshops on different styles and takes you round and shows you the real Morocco off the tourist track. I came back with photographs far exceeding my expectations - especially as the whole week had been so much fun I hardly felt like I was learning!! I would highly recommend both the hotel and the course - darren@photomaroc.co.uk

Was a fantastic experience staying at Maison du Sud. The staff were polite and very helpful always; the hotel and rooms were comfortable and filled with character. Breakfasts was a great experience sitting amongst the plans int he central courtyards. Our rooms were off the rooftop terrace. Definitely recommend requesting these in winter months. The sun streams in in the morning. Great view from the roof also.

This is a great place to stay - right in the middle of the medina but very quiet. The room was lovely, with a split level sleeping arrangement and the most comfortable beds we experienced in Morocco. The staff was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately the bathroom was terrible - the shower routinely flooded the entire bathroom and the flood even rolled out the bathroom door and into the sleeping area. There were also sharp protruding nails sticking up from the tiles of the bathroom entry. We did advise the manager of these problems and presume they are now taken care of. All in all, we'd still rate this riad excellent.

The hotel is an oasis in the bustle of the Medina. Wonderful service from all the staff and great food. The traditional feel and look is impressive with cozy nooks to sit and rest in. Felt like a home and not a hotel. I strongly advise anyone who is travelling to the area to stay here as Brahim and his team will take good care of you.
