A gem of a place....fabulous staff & service

Review of Maison Du Sud
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Nov 22, 2010
A hidden gem of a hotel, beautiful & great location and the staff were just wonderful - Said and Brahim especially. Was part of a group on a photography course for 7 days - would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn how to take great photos & really get to see the whole of the Essaouira area beyond what tourists would normally see..... Okay so I haven't attached any photos - only just got back! Essaouira Images - course run by Darren Lewey. darren@photomaroc.co.uk
Actually preferred Essaouira to Marrakech - more intimate and less hassle.

2 old houses in one big riad in a great location, great discret and professionnal staff. spent 3 nights in 2 differents rooms. I would say the smalest on the terrasse could be a bit cheaper that the regular price.

I booked on the strength of reviews on TripAdvisor and felt lucky that I had. It is a large, but still charming riad in the middle of the medina. I had a room on the roof, which was peaceful and very spacious given that I had booked a single. There aren't the frills you would expect from a more expensive establishment, but I had everything I needed - a clean and characterful room with fresh bedlinen and towels, plus plenty of hot water. The three course set dinner cost 100 Dirhams and was very good. I would recommend half a day of horseriding - cantering along the beach was a spectacular experience.

This riad was lovely. It was central, the staff were nice and the riad owner helped me arrange transfers and travel for my onward journey. You'd be hard pressed to get better value for money than this place

Best things about the Riad are the location and the Roof Terrace. Rooms were fine, but nothing extraordinary. Breakfast was fine. Service was fine. No real complaints and will be suitable for most people...but was a bit dark and not the most spectacular riad. You wont be disappointed - but you also wont go home raving about it. Location was right in the middle of the action - 5 minutes from the harbor and beach and 5:30am wake up call to prayer from the close by Mosque - which was cool to hear...as long you can get back to sleep....

The management staff could not have been more helpful. I stayed in one of the terrace apartments that overlooked the town - fantastic at 4.30am to sit and listen the first prayer call, to breakfast there or to sit and sip mint tea at night; nothing was too much trouble. My room consisted of a good bed (never to be underestimated!!) a dressing area, sitting room and bathroom with walk in shower. Maid service every day and helpful staff to assist in anything form choosing a good restaurant to horse riding along the beach.
