Great to wander round an old fashioned working fishing port. The smaller blue boats filled the harbour, constantly in and out- the fish being sold at little stalls by the harbour. The larger boats all still made from wood- have a look at the repair yard, fascinating to see old carpentry skills in use today. Eat the fish straight from the sea at the grill stalls or in Chez Sam- Chez Sam very good value and can have a local white wine- lovely!

If you're in essaouira you simply have to visit the harbour! And make sure to eat some of the freshly grilled and caught fish!

I felt like I was in the Hitchcock movie "The Birds" here. There were so many birds! Smart birds I should say, as there are plenty of fish at this dock. We walked out to see it and got lots of great photos. We then turned around and went up to the rampart nearby. From there we could tell that we should have gone all the way to the end of the dock, which we went back to do. I guess we thought it was just for "workers" to go to. But this is where they were unloading a boat, and where sellers had their fish on the ground for people to purchase. We were there late in the day, so there weren't a lot of sellers, but it was still very enjoyable.

I'm speaking of the fish stalls just by the port. The price per kilo of the fish, shellfish etc are all marked on cards - you will be shown them by the stall-holders. Some stalls will immediately offer a lower price-per-kilo (we had lobster at 200 MAD per kilo instead of the marked price of 350 MAD). But most of the stalls will start putting assorted fish, squid, etc on a tray and will say "two people, only 150/200 dirhams". With fish at 25-40 dirhams per kilo, you'd need at least 4 kilos on the tray! But there's usually less than one kilo. So, my suggestion is - choose one fish, have it weighed, get a price, choose the next, ditto. The stall will add a salad, bread and, maybe, frites. The quality will probably be first class - but just keep an eye open that the fish you chose was the one that goes on the grill. And, if you buy wine beforehand, decant into a mineral-water bottle, they'll give you glasses.

Picturesque and steeped in history, don't miss this old port with the colourful boats that still seems to function much as it has for centuries.
