Description: Restored carefully with respect for tradition and heritage, la 'Table Madada' is a former warehouse where the Jewish traders, "the 'kings traders", stored carob. This fruit of the carob tree, a tree in the legume family which grows in the region of Essaouira, was then exported via the port towards Europe. The seeds of the carob have a strangely regular weight, which gave the name to the unit of measure 'carat'. Its seeds but also the sap of carob tree, is nowadays used in the form of a stabilizer found in sweets and ice cream. Originally a sub-Saharan slave at the service of privileged families, the dada in time became a cook, nanny and confidante. Loved and feared at the same time, she represented the guard of the home and passed on her traditional cuisine. Some of these dadas became famous for having a particular dish.

Great restaurant, little more pricey than your standard moroccan fare but worth every penny. great service, huge lightshades big enough to live in (to quote the guide book) and delicious varied menu including european dishes. Accomodated our party of 12.

Excellent food in comfortable surroundings with friendly and attentive staff. If you are looking for something more than the usual 'Plat du Jour' then may I recommend you try here. Prices are slightly higher than some other places in the Medina but well worth it in my opinion. The same dining experience back home would be a lot more expensive that’s for sure. On the evening we went there was a totally divine special of carpaccio de pulpo (octopus) for starter followed by another of the specials that day a beef tajier (not tagine) which was a slow cooked stew in an earthenware pot which was also thoroughly enjoyed. From the normal menu I had a fantastic aubergine and feta terrine followed by a dish of crab gratin, both perfect.

....you fancy something other than a tagine. We had not booked but were lucky to get a table (it was busy - usually a good sign) Merci to the lady at the front of house. Very pleasant owner and her brother run the place, she greeted us personally as with each diner, very personable and engaging. Relaxed atmosphere (although v European), food was very good (tapas to start, great steak and chips) and delicious prawn risotto. Was pleased to see a nice dessert trolley :-). We'll go again before we leave Essaouira!

Me and my boyfriend would really rate this restaurant as the best. We lived in Madada Mogador and took cooking course in L'Atelier Madada, but visited the restaurant only the last evening - that's our biggest mistake, as we so much enjoyed the taste and atmosphere. Everything was perfect - from the starters (fresh marinated anchovies and mini tajine of sardine meatballs) to the main course (we took those from the courses of the day - swordfish steak and grilled red mullet) and as the finishing stroke - desserts (chocolate fondant and fruit crumble). Chief cook must be a magician as we have never ever thought that potatoes (served with the main course) could be that savoury. Worth to make special mention about fine design, pleasant service and good wine. This place is a must for visit for those who enjoy fine places! (assume that we were lucky to find free table without reservation, as in an hour after we came all tables were occupied. That's a positive indicator I believe)
