Definitely the best restaurant we went to in Essaouira, with excellent food and exquisite wine. The restaurant is run by the French husband and wife who also run La Cle de Voute. The service was very good.

Really outsider in comparison with Elizir, Triskala cafe and Caravan cafe. Food was ok, but I'm not sure that this is a place you want to visit in a company of friends. They tried to create a romantic atmosphere but failed.

We had high expectations of this Franco-Moroccan restaurant, given its no2 ranking on T/A. After an afternoon of exploring the mdina and its ramparts we were the first customers to arrive at opening time, although only two of its 9 or 10 tables were not already reserved. The menu is not extensive but is sufficiently varied to have something for all tastes. We both skipped the starter and opted for the steak. To our surprise, the steaks were sizeable but not sufficiently cooked for my friend. Nevertheless, this was fairly soon rectified.

The lemon tart to follow was satisfactory, whilst the crème brulée I opted for was delicately and unusually flavoured with lavender. The whole meal could be described as pleasant though not outstanding by a long shot.

Perhaps the ‘jovial’ maître d’ mentioned in previous posts had a night off, as we found the service to be somewhat average and aloof on our visit. As this was the only restaurant we experienced during our short visit to Essaouira, my average score rating is based not on the local competition, but on my own culinary experiences elsewhere. I am sure there are worse places, but I’m pretty certain there are also better ones.

There is not a single issue against 5 points! On the contrary - this is the perfect place to dine. Situated in the old center of the town, a nice stroll through cobblestoned alleys from the maingate away, it has all what you might be looking for: Excellent food and wine reasonably priced, cosy interior and a sympathetic patron fluent in many languages.

We loved it. The ambience is warm and relaxing (unusually good choice of music), the food was excellent and the service helpful and unobtrusive. The gilt-tipped sea bream with a rosemary and lemon sauce was a particular hit. The wine choice is good (although the "gris" cinsault was a tad tart and one-dimensional, that was our choice and no disgrace to be offering it). Prices represent very good value. Overall, I would highly recommend it.
