“Stylish and clean”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2014 via mobile

When we arrived at Ocean Median we were welcomed by a hospitable and helpful French owner who presented us with a city map and told us about interesting and dodgy parts of the town. The rooms were colour themed. Ours was gorgeous red and orange with huge double bed, Moroccan style lamps, throws and rugs. The bathroom was marble and quirky. The whole area was clean and stylish giving you a unique north African feel. However, the room did not have a TV and WiFi signal was very weak which forced us to go downstairs for a better signal. Also, the room wasn't well sound proofed and we could hear people on the stairs and I'm sure we were also heard by other people outside. Another disadvantage was the small size of the room and lack of windows and daylight which, I guess, was ok for 2 days stay . The breakfast was served on the roof top overlooking the sea which was great. The food was sufficient and freshly made and the service was splendid. Overall, its a great place where your needs will be taken care of but for me, more than 2 nights there would be depressing and claustrophobic.

thanks for you comment
glad to read that you appreciated your stay, however I must correct some inaccuracies:

- The room you rented measuring 14m2, I do not consider it to be so small ....
- Like all our rooms, THE ROOM HAS A WINDOW and a second one in the private ensuite bathroom ...

That said, it is true that this room is a bit dark. It is a riad, a traditional Moroccan house, the windows overlook the patio (opened on the sky) and not outside in the street

we take note of your comments and will pose a "door window" to bring more natural light :-)

for the rest, I am pleased to read that you liked the decoration, hospitality, cleanliness, service, and breakfast on the terrace ;-)

Over New Year we spent the second time in Riad Ocean Medina.First of all I have to say that the Riad Ocean Medina has new owners since several month.Do not recognize the most of the former reviews(Azzouz 7),they are no more interesting and to compete with 2013 and 2014.It is newly renovated and all the problems before are over.

Christel and Guillaume,a helpful french couple, are very good hosts, caring a lot about the house and their guests.Friendly and kind atmosphere, clean and lovely decorated.2 very nice roof terraces, overlooking the sea, sunloungers including towels, one terrace to take breakfast on sunny days, and a salon downstairs, with fireplace for colder days.
The price ist pleasently low, even more a point to book Ocean Medina on your visit to the beautiful town of Essaouira.

Travelling many years through morocco, with much experience,I have to say the breakfast is various, changing every day and one of the best we ever had in Morocco.Essaouira even is my second hometown!

I highly recommend the Essaouira-Suite on the roof terrace, having more space and to great the sunny mornings and meeting friendly guests. It wasn´t cold at all in the room, using a cosy and warm blanket.

The nice staff was making the stay even warmer. Many greetings and thank you all, surely coming back - Gabrielle and Uwe from Germany!

Room Tip: My favorite room is the Essaouira-Suite on the roof terrace!

Located within the old town walls this riad isn't far off the main street and close to restaurant Elizr if you can get a booking.
Good breakfast in the morning with a nice view and reasonably priced.

The only negative was that during our two night stay the riad was fully booked so was quite noisy at night and being below the roof top breakfast area the chairs screeching on the tiles don't give you much of a sleep in past 8am. Try requesting a room on the 1st or 2nd floors.

Room Tip: Try requesting a room on the 1st or 2nd floors which will be quieter during breakfast hours

thank you for your review
riads are indeed known for their friendliness but not for soundproofing ;-)
sometimes some guests forget that they are not alone .... sorry
their discharge, it was to be expected, you've stayed with us in time of New Years Eve, the atmosphere is more festive therefore ...

I am very surprised by good reviews achieved by the riad Ocean Medina. Me and my boyfriend totally did not enjoy our stay there. It was the worst riad we visited during our 2 weeks round trip through Morroco.
Starting from pluses, as the list will be short:
- nice terrace (that one normally do not use, as there is a beach and a lot of attractions worth exploring in the medina)
- localisation - close to beach, center and far away from the mosque (as we wanted to enjoy quietness and not to hear morning prayers) but that ended very quickly, as the riad itself was very noisy
so minuses:
- the girl that welcomed us behaved in the riad as she was alone in her own place. being very tired and feeleing unfortunately ill, I wanted to take a nap around 5p.m, which turned up to be impossible- she run up and down the stairs in flip-flops, numerous times, sounding like elefant in too big shoes, additionaly talked or, in fact, shouted to her friend who visited her, and after when it had been on like that for around 2 hours, she started to play very loud arabic pop songs and sing to them as well. I think I do not have to explain how the riad is constructed and what acoustic it has got. anyway it was unbearable. so around 20p.m my boyfriend went down and asked to put the music off.
Second night new noise circumstances appeared- after 10pm we could hear the washing maschine spinning, and what is more interresting there were some people (surely hired by the riad) painting something next to the entrance door at this late a hour, so the entrance doors were open, and once again we could listen for over one hour to shouted conversation in arabic. finally had to go down the stairs ( in pijama) around 11pm and ask for silence.
- the room itself was extremely dark, not only due to lack of window with natural light but aslo in the evening because the bulbs were very weak, so reading in bed was impossible; in the morning around 9 was so dark like in the middle of the night
- there was a wall construction in bathroom that had a function of a shower cabine, but there was no light inside of it, so using it was like taking a shower in a dark tent
- there was no air rotation, the smell was not fresh, room was dumpy
- there were some brown stains on the blanket bringing not pleasant associations
- the breakfast was the same like everywhere, some pastries and jam and a bit of fruit, what was strange- they asked at the end of the meal if we wanted also omletts, when we were already full with this products we were not able to look at anymore
- the last:WATCH OUT THE CITY TAX claimed by the RIAD IS TWICE BIGGER AS IT REALLY IS IN ESSAOUIRA - it sould be 1,5€ instead 3 € ( per person pro night) which we knew as we stayed in E. 2 weeks before in other Riad, and also confirmed with the tourists office.

Room Tip: we stayed in room number1 ( Bab doukala)

Thanks for your feedback
you are surprised by the good reviews ? we are surprised about these if severe and unflattering

Well , what a nightmare ! it makes I wonder why you stayed ...

If our house was not happy at this point you're free to go by shortening your stay
I do not remember having you forced to stay ... You left with a smile, why not have told me honestly ? it is easier behind a keyboard?

therefore , it is so negative that it becomes comic and less credible ;-)

We always read customer feedback to improve our services , but then I confess rather , I'll laugh

I am sorry if we did not meet your expectations , we work to provide priority friendly place , clean, comfortable spacious rooms and a free breakfast and varied breakfast served on a terrace with panoramic views of the ' ocean
all for less than 30 euros ....

You are surprised that offers an omelet ? what is negative ? we have a cosmopolitan clientele , this is part of our habits vary more sweet / salty at breakfast to satisfy each
It is true our breakfast is "normal" a freshly squeezed fruit juice , hot drinks , fresh croissants, local bread , traditional pastries , homemade crepes , cheese , fresh fruit of the season, Dried Fruit and .... an omelette
what you hoped for? caviar and champagne ?

riads are not soundproof , the distribution of the rooms around the patio is what makes their charm and conviviality
people live, talk, work , these are homes , not sanctuaries
and information for our bathrooms are tadelakt traditional Moroccan materials ...

to conclude I think the authenticity does not match you , we strongly advise you to choose places of residence more formatted

First of all this riad is fairly easy to find, but that's where the good points end. The room we stayed in was dark, dingy, damp and dirty, not to mention smelly. The blanket on our bed smelt like it had never been washed and the room was filled with mosquitos and flies. In the three days we were there our room wasn't cleaned once, all of the holidaymakers staying there had to take it upon themselves to go to the laundry room and change they're own towels and replenish loo rolls etc. The bed (advertised as a double but was actually two singles of different height stuck together) was like sleeping on a rock and the sheets were incredibly stiff and not washed well.

As for the breakfast it consisted of a pancake and a pan au chocolat (which had about a pea size worth of 'chocolat' in it) which were heated up in a microwave and served with shop bought orange juice, oh apart from the last day when we were served 2 shop bought plain cupcakes which had obviously spent a bit too long in the microwave (why bother in the first place?) that they were burnt and tasted awful. To top it off the last day of our stay there was building work going on and the entire Riad stunk of raw sewage, delightful.

Needless to say we were very disappointed in this place, and the reviews that say this Riad are romantic must be written by someone that has lived in a cardboard box their entire life, its about as far from romantic as you can get.

It was the most beautiful, cosy, nice and atmospheric hostel of our trip through Morocco. Situated in the heart of medina, maybe a little bit hidden, but if you'll find it - you'll be astonished. Fully deserved "5".

stuck in Marrakesh with no place to stay and guys following you around is not the best of situations. So following a day of intensity and headache i caught a bus to essouira and arrived in the evening. Followed the streets lit in yellow with the call of the night prayer echoing and found a little alleyway and a little door. stepped into a dream for a few weeks; the staff, the room, the breakfasts on the terrace were moments i still remember. My whole glowing experience of Morrocco was down to this little riad/maison.
