We stayed at this hotel for ten nights in November 2012 whilst on holiday to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. I chose a ground floor sea view room in the Nirvana Wing which is over 16s only and seperate from the main hotel with it's own infinity pool, restaurant, bar and access to public beach. The hotel is in a great location right on the beach and the Nirvana Wing really does feel secluded and special. The pool and beach area were never overly crowded and it was always possible to get a couple of sunbeds where you wanted them. The ground floor room was a good choice as you have double doors to a small private patio area and then directly to the garden/pool area with sunbeds and hammocks in the coconut palms. Much better than a more expensive upper floor room where you have a balcony and maybe a better view of the sea, but you have to walk right through the reception and hotel wing and up the stairs to go back to get that book or suncream that you forgot!
The room itself was spacious and everything worked although there was some evidence of a hard life and a need for re-furbishment with some of the furniture and the bathroom tiles, grout etc. The air con worked fine as did the TV and the in room fridge was a real benefit. However, it was kept spotlessly clean and the daily maid service was superb with an endless supply of clean towels as you need them. Sheila was our room lady and she was lovely. She looked after us really well and brought nice little personal touches as well like small gifts for my wife.
Service overall in the hotel is really excellent. Everyone is very well trained, knowledgable, has perfect English and you really get the impression that they want to do the very best for you. Special thanks to Vic and the guys in the Beach Bar - great cocktails and great pool service - and also all the staff in the Cumin restaurant, the Concierge (didn't get the guy's name but he was a star!), and the front desk. Vic said to me "What makes a hotel is the staff" and he is spot on - well done team! Nice Blue Lagoons too!
The only thing that lets the hotel down a bit is the food range and qualilty. There is a large main restaurant (180 Degrees) which is OK but very busy and typical of the buffet style in big hotels. Now there was nothing wrong with the food, actually it was good, but I am not a fan of that kind of self service dining especially when on a special break - it's a bit like glorified school dinners! We ate there a couple of times but really for convenience only. The Indian downstairs, The Cumin, is also a buffet style but it is smaller and less busy. The food was really good and we ate there most nights. The Nirvana a la carte dining offering was less good. We had a couple of very poor meals there early on and didn't bother after that apart from breakfast and lunch, which was good if you don't mind sharing it with the birds. We did have a special "Lobster" meal on the beach (actually they were langoustine!) which was very good but eye wateringly expensive. The seafood style restauarant (Shells) was unfortunately closed for 9 nights during our visit which was a great shame because we ate there for lunch on the last day and it was great (try the octopus salad and the coconut creme brullet - Mmmmm....!).
We were on a full board package which included all meals plus soft and hot drinks between ten and six every day. This was a great option because unlike all inclusive, I did not feel the need to get on the lash from eleven every day! I also used the gym alot and although small and hot it did the job. My wife used the spa and this was good but again eye wateringly expensive.
Alcoholic drinks were good and well made and served, but they are expensive. Four quid for half of lager and seven for a G&T. Wine choice was limited (mostly South African) and very over priced - Cheap South African Sauvignon Blanc was forty quid a bottle. We bought Gordon's and Louis Roderer at the duty free on the way out hence the in room fridge coming in handy! There is a little shop next door for the purchase of tonic water!
Overall, a good stay in a fine location with great service and pretty good value let down slightly by the range and quality of the food offering.
