This was the best hotel I have every stayed at. What really sets the Oberoi apart is their attention to detail. We arrived at the hotel around 8 am and the staff was waiting with welcome drinks to greet us and give us an overview of the resort from the beautiful overlook. We were then taken to our room which had a full breakfast awaiting our arrival. What a great way to start our trip! The room was bright/comfortable/airy, the resort grounds were beautiful, food was delicious, service impeccable. We also loved the romantic couples massage in the private room at their spa. The personal touches continued through our entire stay and even when we arrived home we got a wonderful message from the hotel. My husband and I have added new destinations to our trip wish list just so we can stay at another Oberoi.

Having visited the Oberoi for the second time in September 2012, we were rather disappointed with the service. Housekeeping was not up to scratch and service at the restaurant was slow and not as attentive as when we were there in 2011. However, food was still yummy but service in the could have been better. Do go for half board or full board if you tend to lunch as very pricey otherwise. Alcohol is expensive too. There are a lot of complimentary activities such as snorkelling, hobo cat, water painting, tai chi, breathing exercises etc. There are 2 tennis courts but do book if you wish to play late afternoon. There is a small but sufficient gym and a spa close by. I did not opt of any spa treatments. Fresh fruit is provided in the rooms every day but may not be ripe. Two small bottles of complimentary water is also provided but to be honest we used tap water for tea and coffee and if cooled, it is fine to drink too. In general the staff are accommodating.

Room Tip: Do request for rooms which have the sun in the afternoon if you prefer to sunbathe in the privacy of...

Dear Mrs. Candy C,

We are most saddened to discover the rating you have given the hotel, following your second stay at The Oberoi, Mauritius.

Your interactions with the team, as well as your Guest Comment Card did not reflect that you were this disappointed with the service, or with the hotel.
There were indeed a few housekeeping issues during your stay. This was acknowledged at the time and I again take the opportunity to apologize for the service shortfalls. It should not have happened.

Thank you having chosen to stay at The Oberoi, Mauritius on two occasions. We do value your loyalty.

Sincerely,

Marc Denton

We recently returned from a fabulous two week trip to Mauritius, staying at Le Touessrok on the east of the island and for the second week we stayed at The Oberoi on the north west of the island. We thought we had been truly spoiled at Le Touessrok but it soon became apparent that we were about to experience the next level of hospitality.
On arrival three members of staff were there to great us from the car and knew our names on opening our door, didn't really take it in at the time but how did they know who I was? We were then led across a short bridge to a viewing platform and presented with a mojito to freshen us up after our long journey, one hours drive from the other side of the island!!! After taking in the stunning setting of the resort we were taken to our room.
We had seen photos on tripadvisor but there's nothing like seeing it for yourself, it was stunning, with a view to die for. The rooms are extremely well appointed and very comfortable. The bathroom was stunning with floor to ceiling glass.
The whole resort has the most relaxing aura I've ever experienced. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and you're made to feel truly special. An example of this exemplary service was that I mentioned to a member of staff (David) that we were hiring a car for a couple of days and planned to visit Black River Gorge which I had read about and had to have a number of walking trails. Our initial plan was to drive to the Black River Gorge and then head straight back but David sat us down and informed us about a number of other sites we simply must visit and we could tell from his enthusiasm that we would be silly to miss out. The next day at breakfast the waiter asked us if we were going on our day trip, which only David could have told him about, when we said yes they prepared a takeaway box of fruit, water, juices and some pastries.
That day we set off with our map marked out with all the fantastic sites in the south of the island and had an amazing day. I would thoroughly recommend either hiring a car (roads are in great condition and driving isn't too crazy) or going on an organised day trip to the south. Black River Gorge is spectacular and some of the waterfalls were by far the best we have ever seen.
The food at the resort is exceptional with a huge choice on offer. There are three restaurants, the fine dining main restaurant, On The Rocks a more casual affair set right on the beach and with food from the barbecue and finally The Gunpowder room. We went to the Gunpowder room once for a Mauritian cuisine evening where the chef explained each dish we were going to have, how it was prepared etc. Maybe this is more for the foodies but we absolutely loved the evening.
The resort has its own watersports centre which was well run with frequent trips out to the reef for snorkelling and also has waterskiiing and glass bottom boat trips on offer. If you wanted though you could snorkel straight off the jetty and you would see plenty of fish and interesting coral. My wife was really impressed with the spa, we also found the gym to be well equipped and there are plenty of things to keep you busy on the resort if you so wish with daily activities organised like star gazing, wine tasting, evening jogs etc.
In a lot of reviews the manager gets a mention and I wondered before I arrived why this was. He makes a point of introducing himself to you, seems genuinely concerned on how you are enjoying your time at the resort and seems to have a very hands on approach. He and his staff should be very proud of what they have created at The Oberoi Mauritius, extremely hard to fault. My only issue I have with the resort is where am I supposed to go on holiday next, surely nowhere can compete with this!
If I was to do this trip again I would have booked in to a hotel in the south west of the island for a week, there's plenty of hotels to choose from and the scenery in the south is stunning, and then without a doubt I'd stay at The Oberoi for the second week.

Dear RobbieJ01,
Dear April and May Reviewers,

It is again time to acknowledge all the reviews that have been posted on Trip Advisor in the months of April and May. I wish to send a genuine note of appreciation to all our guests who spent time preparing such wonderful reviews. You have written to us from the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland and South Africa.

It is such an encouragement for the team and I to read how much you are touched by the attentions you received on your holidays. I have said it before, but the comments always reflect how it is the staff who have contributed to making your stay so special. Thank you for recognizing the team members, and for appreciating them.

From the entire team and myself, we hope to welcome you back very soon.

Warm Regards,

This was one of the best hotel stays I have had till date. The property itself is incredible and the staff seem to just do the right thing at the right time ALL THE TIME :). The spa too is something which should be experienced for words would not be able to do justice to it. This is what dreams are made off.

I cant wait to go back and experience the Oberoi magic.

We stayed here for one week in April and it was lovely, we couldn't fault the hotel on a single thing. The staff were extremely helpful without being OTT, the facilities were great, the food was lovely with the really nice touch that you had a choice of four places to eat if you were on half board so you didn't get bored. I can really recommend it and we were sad to leave. Honestly can't think of a single fault with this lovely place, well done to all the staff!

This is a world class resort run with extreme efficiency and superb caring. Although these sound like opposites, here they are complimentary. Whilst I can’t say nothing went wrong, the few things that did, for example a very weak Wi-Fi in our room, this was attended to and corrected within a matter of minutes. If something wasn’t to our liking, the one evening room service took forever to clear, when we ordered from room service again, there was a little extra dish in the form of an apology. In short, this resort is a rather special place with exemplary service being the centre of their success.

Whilst it has a superb spa facility, we realised rather early on in our stay that the whole resort is really a spa. From remembering your name, learning what you like/dislike to just generally pampering guests, each member of staff is polite, attentive and very helpful.

Unsolicited flowers and a most delicious chocolate mousse cake on my wife’s birthday are testimony of this.

Be aware that some rooms have better sea views than others. Ours, 508 and generally those from 501 to 512

have great views over Turtle Bay and are very close to the adults only swimming pool. This pool lacks a beach though.

The main beach, with another equally glorious pool faces the open ocean and rooms 312 to 316 are best for views.

If you are splurging, luxury pavilion 206 with its private pool overlooks the main beach and has the most glorious sun set views.

Our preference for food was The Rocks restaurant, with its nightly barbeque of fresh fish. Also, being smaller than the main

restaurant, service tended to be more personal, less rushed and more attentive. By the way the Caesar salad, which you can get anywhere in the resort, is in our mind the best in the world. Head Chef, Igor, even went to the trouble of making us Panzerotti one evening. They were simply superb.

There are just too many people to thank individually for a truly exquisite nine days of shear bliss, suffice to say that Marc Denton and his management team and all the staff get a huge vote of thanks and appreciation from us. We will most definitely return.

The manager at this hotel surely knows how to lead his staff and my wife and I along with our 6 year old daughter had a thoroughly relaxing and fantastic stay at this hotel as a net result.

We, after having spent one very disappointing night at the Lux Belle Mare moved to the Oberoi into a Villa with Pool which was very private - nice sized pool, dining terrace and very comfortable bed, sunken bath and large shower with seperate dressing room. Just what the doctor ordered !!

This hotel, the gardens, the facilities, the service, private dining, the restaurants etc are fully deserving of their 5 star rating. A really nice touch which as a parent I thought was excellent was a family pool with a seperate adults only pool, both beautifully designed and avoided that parental stress of trying to keep your daughter quiet around 'grown ups'. That said as this hotel has only I believe 70 rooms in 20 acres you'd be hard pressed even at 100% capacity to ever feel overrun or overcrowded. Yes it is a little more expensive but you would not regret this for a moment.

Kids cub here if you have children is perfectly balanced - not a drop your child off for the day affair, moreover well selected excursions such as going to an aquarium, clay modelling, art work, waterskiing, craft work etc for a few hours a day - just enough time for Mum and Dad to have a chill out but equally spend time with our wonderful daughter whom whilst working don't see enough of already ! And for catering for your child they make such a fuss of them and make them feel so special, it's just wonderful.

I didn't sample the Spa but my wife was in a very good mood every time she came back so it must be good !! :-) and the gym was well equipped.

So, if your idea is luxury surroundings, beautiful sunsets, attentive discreet service, very good food and a perfect blend of relaxation and fun, don't bother looking anywhere else, take the plunge and book this hotel. If you want to play golf, go horse riding, venture around the island etc etc all can be organised but then you can get away from it all and enjoy the serenity of your luxury surroundings.

My only gripe, that I had wasted 1 night of my 10 night break at the Lux Belle Mare.

Room Tip: If you go for a Royal Villa 112 - ideal spot overlooking the beach and sunsets. Though to be perfect...
