“Great beach”
Reviewed February 8, 2009

This is a lovely small hotel set right on a fantastic beach. We stayed in one of the 'cottages.' The room was a good size with AC, TV, tea/coffee facilities, safe, fridge, hairdryer. We had a huge comfortable bed and a large bathroom. The room was kept very clean but the paintwork was a little shabby and they seemed to have not enough towels (sometimes they were collected in the morning and not returned until the afternoon). The gardens were kept beautifuly and the staff were among the best in any hotel I have stayed, when you went for dinner there was always someone to meet you, show you to a table, get you a drink, plates were cleared promptly. The food was very good, lots of choice first week but less the second when the hotel had fewer guests. I loved the Indian food and had that most days. There was a mix of nationalities, Indian, French, Italian, German, Austrian and English, because it was a small hotel everyone was very friendly. We booked with Mercury Direct and flew Air Mauritius, the flight was ok but very cramped, not sure if I'd use that airline again. In the advertisments for the hotel is says there is thrice weekly entertainments, free glass bottom boat trip and free sunset cruise with free drink and nibbles. The only entertainemnt we saw in the two weeks we were there were Sega dancers twice and music on a couple of nights. The sunset cruise was neither at sunset or a cruise. We left at 4.30 (sunset is about 8pm) and 'puttered' in a motor boat along the coast for about half an hour. The refereshments were a plastic cup half full of warm coke! Having said that we loved the hotel and Mauritius and our only reget was that we'd only booked two weeks instead of three.

We have just returned after 3 wonderful weeks at this lovely hotel with the most friendly and helpful staff ever. It is a small 3 star hotel with very good service and warm atmosphere and good food.

We travelled with Mercury Direct who were excellent. Flight with BA was good and only half full so we could spread out. We were met at the airport by Cathay Tours who are the agents for Mercury Direct. They were there to greet us, we were transported on our own in a minibus and the driver gave us info as we travelled.
ARRIVAL AT HOTEL
We were given a welcome drink and information while we waited for our room to be cleaned as we arrived in the morning. The reception staff were all very helpful and friendly.
OUR ROOM
We had a really good room with the best of views, overlooking the swimming pool and the beach. We were lucky enough to have 2 bedrooms and a huge bathroom with a walk in shower. Also, a large balcony where we could sit and watch the sunset each evening. We had tea & coffee facilities and a large flat screen TV with BBC world news. There was also a hair dryer and a safe. Any problems we had were quickly dealt with by the maintenance staff. Our cleaner was very helpful and adequate, and they seemed to buy brand new towels while we were there too which replaced the old ones.
FOOD
We found the food all very good. Breakfast consisted of fresh fruit, yoghurt, bread, toast, cheese, eggs to order, bacon, sausage, baked beans, liver & onion (Mauritian), special Indian breakfast , cake, croissants, chocolate buns, fruit juice, tea and coffee.
Dinner was usually a buffet, very varied. All kinds of salads. They have the best Indian chef, Ramesh, who we became friends with. He cooked all vegetable curries, and usually there were at least 3 with rice and chapatties. All delicious. They would also have some kind of meat dish, and fish dish too, plus other vegetable dishes. Some nights it was a Chinese buffet. Also, on occasion, there was pasta. And sometimes a barbecue. The best desserts were the almond eclairs! And there was always fruit salad. If you wanted something extra, they would always try to make it for you. The chefs were always on hand to explain what the dishes were and to help if you needed it.
STAFF
The staff are the friendliest people I have ever met in a hotel. Where else can you be sitting on a sunbed and a manager will come up to you and shake your hand and ask if everything was alright! All the staff in the restaurant were very efficient, incredibly friendly and helpful. The reception staff were wonderful too. As were the gardeners, cleaners, mainenance staff, bar staff and the managers.
THE BEACH
The beach is kept very clean, especially in front of the hotel. They have some sunbeds on the beach with a few umbrellas. There are also some sunbeds around the pool with a few umbrellas too. We never had a problem getting a sunbed if we wanted one. My husband went snorkelling most days from the beach and found a variety of fish as it is very shallow. You are only swimming within the reef, but he still saw a selection of fish although the coral is mostly dead. There are boats for hire for fishing, dolphin watching and snorkelling and barbecues if you want but you should haggle for prices.
THE ISLAND
We hired a car because we like to see the whole place and not just sit on the beach. It's a beautiful island. The interior of the island is very beautiful and lush green vegetation everywhere with fields of sugar cane everywhere. There are some wonderful beaches too. Driving is fairly good, but be aware that the road signs are a bit lacking at times and the maps are not so good. However, we did manage to see a lot and it was well worth it.

Try to go and see the Medine Sugar Cane Factory at Bambous up the road from Flic en Flac. You have to book and it costs 200 rupees/person. And it is the most interesting place ever.

Also, go and see the Tea Plantation at Bois Cheri, where you get a guided tour of the factory and you get to taste various different teas afterwards including biscuits.

We went to Pamplemousse Botanical gardens which is a lovely place with wonderful giant Amazon lilies.

And if you manage to get to Gris Gris on the south coast there is a lovely little restaurant called Chez Rosy where you get a superb lunch very reasonable prices.

We also went to Port Louis on the bus which comes every 15 minutes and is cheap and reliable and an experience seeing all the locals.

If you are going to the Gold Beach Hotel you will have a wonderful holiday and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Anyone needing anymore info, please contact me.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gold Beach Resort. It is a charming quaint little hotel, with warm and friendly ambience. The rooms are not luxurious but adeqaute, and if you get a room with a balcony and a view, even better. They are clean and well serviced. The food was terrific with variety and suited to all tastes. The beach was clean and not at all overcrowded and the gardens are beautiful. The service was outstanding and all the staff made you feel like you were special. The only negative aspect is the lack of watersports but you can arrange your own if you want to. It is close to the shops and bus stop and buses come by every 15 minutes so it was very convenient. If you enjoy reading and walking, then you will love it. The best value for money we've ever had. Thank you, we will definitely be back for another holiday.

The hotel is located right on the beach...although doesnt have great facilities like other more star properties..
However, the hotel has a warm feel to it..its a family run kind of hotel..warm and friendly people to take care of u..u have an option of eating good vegetarian indian food (dinner) as well..and standard continetal breakfast
shops are close by for small sundry stuff to munch..
Not a place...if u r looking for a posh experience..but it basically just abt meets ur every need.

The hotel is good for Budget Travellers as it is a place from where the markets is easily accessiable unlike other hotels. The rooms are good and they are cleaned daily, bathroom is clean and also big. Food is also good especially the breakfast which is awesome. If you are a non veg eater then, you will love the buffet dinner. The resort being next to the beach, you feel like you are on a private beach. It is not surprising that the beach is clean. The resort is near to couple of super makets where you can buy everything but make sure to compare the rates in both if you are a budget traveller. There is a restaurant nearby the resort called as Zub Express where you can go to when you want to try something other than Mauritian food.
Overall the hotel location as well as the hotel is good. I recommend it to all budget travellers.
