Our Trip to Mauritius at the Sands Resort - was the most beautiful experience I've had on holiday. It was like waking up in heaven.. The Resort, service, food, spa cannot be faulted. They were very attentive to all details and we were able to relax and enjoy each day. Thank you.

May 2014 was our 5th fabulous visit to the Sands. It's always an amazing feeling walking into the hotel and looking out over Tamarin Bay and the Le Morne peninsular. A sense of calmness and our relaxation can begin knowing we are going to be looked after for the next 9 days. Our ground floor room was on the Tamarin side close to the beach was beautifully decorated to welcome us back with many special much appreciated gifts. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable. Extra pillows were requested as my husband fractured his humerus 10 days before our holiday. The bathroom is also large with separate bath, shower, double basins and separate loo. The bath towels are plentiful and changed twice daily if required. Toiletries, soap, shower gel, shampoo body lotion of good quality and replenished daily. The hotel is presently under renovation ( June 2014 - 18 August 2014) and the bathroom and walk in wardrobe area will be updated. The room was serviced daily. Turn down at night while we were at dinner, chocolate on your pillow and some other tasty goodnight cake. It seems everything happens like magic as staff unobtrusively go about their work.
Breakfast is buffet style in the Tamarind Terrace with plenty of choices, fruits, yoghourts, cereals, cooked breakfasts, breads and pastries. Small snacks and frozen juices are served on the beach.Lunches are served on the beach or in the Pink Peppercorn restaurant. Dinner is served in the Tamarind Terrace or Spices a la carte restaurant. The Chef checked on our requirements and prepared delicious meals for us. All the meals were excellent, presentation and taste. You can also make use of the restaurants at Maradiva Hotel next door, sister hotel to Sands Hotel.

We love the beach. It is peaceful with not much through traffic been the last hotel on this stretch of beach. We enjoyed early morning walks down to La Pirogue before breakfast and before sunset. Magnificent photo opportunities to capture sunsets at Maradiva. There are plenty of beach recliners, umbrellas or shade and really nice thick beach towels, which can be exchanged daily at the boat house. You can find a list of daily activities behind the Band stand. Glass bottom and snorkel boats go out twice daily weather permitting. I snorkelled every day, from the snorkel boat or from the beach. The water was warm and visibility good. I take my own snorkelling kit and flippers but if you go on the boat can use the boat house equipment. There are also wind surfers, lasers , kayaks and pedalos for guest to use. Please wear protective foot wear. I usually go bare foot or wear slip slops on the beach but always wear wet shoes or flipppers when swimming. One unfortunate guest stood on a stone fish, was in incredible pain and spent the rest of his holiday on crutches.

The infinity pool is impressive, heated with a beautiful view over the bay. Plenty of recliners and umbrellas.
We did not explore as much as we usually do due to my husbands fractured arm. I did go to Cascavelle Shopping Mall. The Mall have a free shuttle (Mondays and Fridays 16H00) which collects guests from the hotel. You need to book with the Concierge in advance. Some of the shops from last year had closed down and new ones opened. Monoprix has replaced Pick and Pay. Not as much choice as Pick and Pay or Super U in Grand Bay but enough and reasonable prices. Lays chips MR 136, cokes, sprites 500ml MR 26, and some decent South African wine! ( MU 369 ) Pridmark has a store, but not the same as in London, U.K. The shop where I bought 2 handbags last time closed down. You can buy most items at the Spar in Flic en Flac, I usually stop en route to hotel to buy bottled water (MR 14,65 for 1500ml) and Doom odourless(180ml) mosquito repellent) Phoenix or Blue Marlin Beer MR 30.
The Sands supply bottled water on arrival. Bottled water with meals about MR 100, wine by the glass (small serving) MR300 , Cocktails MR 250. Drinks in the Bar served with a variety of snacks. I usually bring in some duty free wine. You can drink it in your room or on the patio. At night I usually had a glass of wine and bottled water with my meal.

This was the first time I used the Spa and now know it is one of the best kept secrets. I had an excellent Sands massage ( 60 minutes MR 2400) You can also make use of the sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi in tranquil surrounding. My husband had great haircut MU 600.

All I all we had a wonderful holiday and the weather played its part. The Management and staff really looked after us and we know why we return time after time. This is a special place. We look forward to the new upgrades when we return.

Room Tip: We always stay in the Tamarin wing , close to the beach , ground floor room.

We stayed at The Sands for six days on our way to Africa. While we enjoyed our stay at the hotel we would probably not return either to the hotel or to Mauritius.A bit hard on Mauritius perhaps but it is a long way to,experience what is available much closer in Australia ,Asia and South Pacific and cheaper as well.

The hotel itself is adequate. The rooms are large comfortable and well maintained. The beach is fine although footwear is needed for swimming as the floor of the sheltered seabed is crushed coral. Not the hotel's fault - the water is pleasant and water sports are free although the area for use is restricted. The pool is a relatively shallow one and adequate but we have enjoyed many better.

Staff were uniformly friendly and helpful although as with other reviewers we came to the conclusion that it was mandatory for the question in one form or another (including telephone call) of is everything OK and to your liking to be asked at each contact. It did become tiring. French was the staff language and while English was also spoken the ability to communicate in detail varied amongst staff. This should not be taken as a criticism as all requests were able to be met.

The main problem was food and although we had read the mixed reviews we were still overall disappointed.Buffet is not our ideal choice (we did of course go in the full understanding this was the offer) and our experience at The Sands did not alter our view. The quality of the buffet varied from night to night and there was always something that was acceptable but not exceptional. Many of the dishes had become dry in the bain maries and dinner was never a lingering one in what is a very pleasant dining area. The dining area was usually empty by 9.30 . We visited one of the on site restaurants which was better although they were both poorly visited.

Lunch was fine in the bar area (not buffet!) and breakfast covered all possibilities. Beware the birds - some guests were feeding them and some were shooing them away!

We did visit Flic en Flac and had a pleasant lunch although there is not much in the town to attract. Also visited a restaurant outside the town - Villa Anna - a reasonable taxi ride but a bit weird - restaurant was scattered over a large area, seems to be an Asian inspired menu but it was very difficult to see anything as lighting was almost non existent.

We did enjoy our stay there and the hotel is a perfectly acceptable 4 star one and the lack of patronage at the on site restaurants notwithstanding the credit available seemed to indicate that most patrons were appreciative of this offer. The hotel is also considerably cheaper than others nearby.

The dinner offer is pretty much the sole reason for what would otherwise be a higher rating

Dear Mr. James S

The Sands team thanks you for sharing your Sands experience on Trip Advisor.

We are highly appreciative of your kind remarks regarding the well maintained and spacious comfortable rooms. Thank you for recommending the use of protective beach shoes which are useful during swimming because of dead corals. If guests forget to bring theirs , it is good to know that the beach shoes are available at the hotel shop.

Our infinity pool is heated during the winter season and the depth is 1m20 which is adequate for swimming and also for aqua gym which is a very popular activity amongst guests and is organized daily.

Though our team members are more comfortable in communicating in French language, they are also able to speak English but we are aware that sometimes it is hard for them to decipher the meaning as some guests have some accents which they are not used to.

We deeply apologize to have caused some inconvenience and embarrassment if our team members have been soliciting your feedback too often. Please be informed that the managers of the respective departments have already taken the necessary steps to remedy this kind of situation.

We understand that you were not completely happy with the buffet offerings. We have managed to serve a ‘table d’hôte’ afterwards and guests appreciated the enhanced food quality but missed the variety of dishes that were available on the buffet. Nevertheless, our executive chef will be offering a buffet of high quality when the hotel will reopen around mid August.

Sands is actually renovating all its rooms, kitchen and restaurants. Our guests who will stay with us, will experience the finest standards hospitality and we hope that you will be one of them though you mentioned that you will not visit Mauritius again… If you do, you will be most welcome and we will be honored to be at your service again.

Thank you again for your review and we wish you to enjoy your holidays wherever you go in the world.

Kind regards,

Patrick,
Resident manager.

My wife and I stayed at the Sands at beginning of May for 14 wonderful nights. We wanted a relaxing holiday and that is what we got!! During our stay it was my wife's 50th birthday and I arranged for us to have a private breakfast in the beachfront gazebo with waiter service ( which was wonderful). The housekeeping service decorated the room with flowers spelling out ' happy birthday' which was a really thoughtful thing to do.

The catering staff and waiters and bar staff are really thoughtful and are the main credit to the hotel. We would like to say a special thank you to a waiter called 'Sen', great guy with a wonderful sense of humour and always remembered everything we liked and nothing was too much trouble. We met with the chef, Viren as we had certain dietary requirements and we had delicious food every evening, Christophe the chef was also great including also the breakfast cooks, always cheerful and very accommodating.

The room was really nice and we had a wonderful view looking out to sea. Small balcony that we sat on of an evening when back from the beach with a lovely view. Room includes an iron and ironing board which was very useful.

We went to Port Louis one day, which we were not that impressed with (1 hour on the bus - tip!! stay on until the terminus in PL so you know where to get back on). We also went to the Cascavelle shopping Mall, about 15 mins on the bus, they have a supermarket there which is very good value and has everything you need. To get the bus, turn left out of hotel and walk for about 15 mins until you get to the last hotel, the Hilton. You will then see a patch of land with buses on ( that is the terminus). The 123 goes to the Cascavelle and then onto Port Louis. The bus fare is incredibly cheap and a good way to travel. If you don't want to walk back to the hotel with your shopping then there are plenty of taxis outside each hotel.

Buy sea shoes before you go!! You will definitely need them, due to the coral in the sea and on the beach, although the Sands beach is still nice and the water is very clear. Once on the beach, if you turn left, then walk through the woods, following the man made path for about 15 mins you will come to another beach with no coral at all ( I think it is called the Tamarind Bay golf resort). The Sands hotel also has canoes and pedalows to use free of charge, which is very nice. Waiters also bring slush puppy drinks and nibbles around the pool once or twice a day.

Entertainment on the evening is the best we have experienced whilst on holiday, with a disco on a Saturday evening and then singers throughout the week. My wife also visited the Spa which was brilliant.

My wife and I stayed for 4 nights in May. We usually travel long haul regularly and like our holidays to be active. But this time we needed a quiet and restful one. We've been to MRU several times and know the island well.
We chose 'Sands' because of TAs favourable reviews and its location: we wanted to be on the east coast.
We were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a sea-facing suite which comprises of 2 bedrooms, 2 balconies with table, chairs and sofas overlooking the best views of any hotel we've stayed so far!
Patrick, the resident manager, and his staff delivered the service we expected with efficiency and smiles. He certainly ensured that our needs and requests were met! We did not use the hotel facilities except the gym which was adequate but empty most of the time.
Our only major niggle was the very poor wifi connection in our suite. We had to go to the reception area to use our devices. Hence the 4 stars as free wifi connectivity is important to us.

We have just returned home from another perfect stay at the Sands Resort, this was our sixth visit and as always the Management and Staff made this a memorable stay. The location and size of the resort is perfect for couples looking for a romantic, relaxing and special holiday.
Our first stay was in 2007 when we were married there, the staff and facilities made it a perfect wedding day, we would thoroughly recommend the Sands for an intimate wedding/honeymoon.
We are always made to feel special from the moment we step in the foyer, until the moment we reluctantly leave to go home. The staff are always friendly and helpful, from the first welcoming drink when you arrive nothing is too much trouble for them, good service is paramount.
The breakfast buffet was a good choice and plentiful, the new set menus for dinners were very good and the bar food was excellent with a great range of cocktails.
The amazing pool over looks the ocean, Tamarin Bay and La Morne, a perfect sight when relaxing on the sun beds sipping a cocktail. The resort definitely has the best outlook of the bay, beating their 5 star hotel neighbours hands down.
The rooms have stunning views of the ocean and we loved sitting on the balcony just taking in the surroundings. We are looking forward to returning next year to stay in the new refurbished rooms, we know we will not be disappointed.

After reading all the reviews on this place it was easy to see why it got such great feedback. We travelled there for our honeymoon ane were treated brilliantly from the moment we arrived. Food in the bar was very good. Good choice excellent service. We were on full board option so our breakfast and dinner were buffet style. Dinners were ok. Different theme each night. Lobster night is definately a must. Also make sure you book a table in their Spices restaurant. It was amazing especially the coconut souffle.
Pool was kept spotless, beach was cleaned every morning as alot of coral is washed up onto the sand, the poolside and beachside service was first class.
Would definately recommend for a honeymoon / special occassion.
