“Fantastic honeymoon”
Reviewed August 10, 2014 via mobile

We stayed here in June for our honeymoon. What a fantastic place it was. The whole resort was spotlessly clean including the beach and the grounds were always being maintained. Staff were friendly and polite especially the bar staff! The food was lovely and we had a superb honeymoon meal on the beach. The location was good with a bus stop just outside the resort, very cheap and easy to get around. We had to leave the resort at 4am to catch out flight back home and they had even put breakfast out for us to have before we left! There is nothing negative to say about this resort! Fantastic stay!

Had a fantastic week at La Pirogue. The location is stunning and to sit outside your own bungalow, drinking cocktails and watching the sun set, there's nothing better. Great team who made our holiday special.

Dear Jan D,

It gives us great pleasure to read that the authentic and comfortable Mauritian bungalows nestled in the heart of the coconut plantation bordering the white sandy beach were up to your expectations. Thank you for reviewing us on this forum and we sincerely hope to welcome you back in a very near future for some more cocktails and sunset scenes.

This hotel has always been a favourite of mine because of its bungalow accomodation set in well established gardens. It dates back to 1976 and has had a few upgrades/refurbs since then.
It met our expectations - lovely manicured gardens dotted with hammocks and garden swings, plenty of sunbeds in the gardens as well as on the long beach which has stunning views towards Tamarin Bay and Le Morne.
Although the hotel had 90% occupancy lots of sunbeds available - the hotel has a policy of removing towels if you leave then (I think for longer than an hour)
Because of its unique style it has a very different ambience to your run of the mill hotel blocks - very relaxing.

Accomodation in cute semi and detached bungalows - we had a semi and still managed a sea view.
Room was not a bad size, plenty of storage space, usual mini bar (very well stocked) room safe etc.
One niggle - the pillows. 2 out of 4 were worn and lumpy but we managed..
Bathroom had shower and bath - the overhead shower had a dribble of cold water when you used the hand held one which was irritating.
No body lotion or conditioner, or cotton wool buds, manicure kits or sewing kits.
There was a note that they would provide extra bathroom amenities besides the basic shampoo soap and shower gel but we didn't need anything extra.
Lovely little terrace with a view towards the sea.

Free WIFI was available only in public areas which is a bit of a let down for a 4* hotel.

We were on FB which included all meals but no drinks.
Drink prices weren't too bad - we paid around £7.00 - 8.00 for a local beer and glass of Chenin Blanc at meals - we dined at Sugar Beach's Citronella one night and the drinks prices came to around £10.00.
You are allowed to dine at both La Pirogue and Sugar Beach but you must book 24 hours in advance.
On arrival we requested a booking at Citronella (well within the 24 hour deadline) and were told it was not possible as it was fully booked.
They tried a few times and eventually managed to get us a table - the odd thing was it was half empty when we went.
Food was good at Thatches main buffet restaurant - quite a good selection.
I'm a veggie with a nut and kiwi allergy and the kitchen staff were very undertanding and accomodating with my problem.
Again, breakfast very good selection of hot and cold.

One niggle was check out time. We had asked for an hours extension as we had a boat trip booked and then lunch but no chance - they said they were fully booked and that was that.
We decided to give the boat trip and lunch a miss and checked out on time.

Another small niggle was having to wait for tables at lunch time but the wait wasn't too long.

Overall we loved the hotel and hope to return in October for my wedding anniversary and/or birthday! Just waiting for them to release tarrifs!

We stayed at La Pirogue for 7 Nights, wish we could stay longer!

The facility is one of the older hotels in the area but the hospitality, scenery and abundance of activities are attraction points that will make us go back again.

We got upgraded to sea view bungalows, spacious rooms comfortably sleeping three people. Every night we got treated with afternoon snacks in our rooms, buffet was good and the selection ample.

Sugar beach is connected to this resort as they fall under one umbrella, so all the facilities are available for all guests, making the dining choices extensive. The spa at Sugar beach made for a lovely afternoon outing.
Definitely a family resort destination with a great kids club and the staff are very friendly to help out with the little ones.

Water aerobics, spinning classes and a variety of recreational facilities are available, we never had a dull moment.

Room Tip: With kids, requesting rooms close to the kids play area was helpful to us.

Our family of 12 just returned from La Pirogue. It was the perfect for this type of holiday as there is something for all ages. e used all the facilities and couldn't fault anything. The thing that really impressed us though was the friendliness of the staff. I would definitely recommend taking the all inclusive package as we did, as their food and bar prices are really over the top!

This is our third stay at La Pirogue and I should have reviewd it the first time.Once you are in the complex you at once feel relaxed and at peace with yourself amidst coconut groves , the white sandy beaches, the turquoise lagoon ,the distant horizon and smiles on the faces of all the staff .
The Spa is out of this world with its Moroccan tiling and decor. The service provided there is very proffessional and the ambiance very soothing .
The variety of food provided is more than enough to satisfy anybody and the staff is more than eager to satisfy any special request you have and that too done with a smile ! The garden is a real shangrila where you can wander freely. The array of activities will please even the most difficult of customers be it in terms of water sports, kid's club, gym, swimming pool . If you are like me, just enjoy doing nothing and allow yourself to be pampered. This is mauritian hospitality at its best.Wish I could afford to stay longer there.

We were allowed to check in the room early, which was great following 16 hours of travelling. ( I know it greatly depends on room availability but we really appreciated this gesture from the hotel).
We stayed in a standard room and I am glad we did not pay extra for a sea view, as all the huts are located short walk from the beach (as opposed to right on the beach like in Maldives).
The housekeeping did a good job with cleaning our room well every day, so no issues there.

The quality and variety of food is really good. Especially I liked the Mauritius night, when they had an open air bbq. One night they had free cocktails at 19:00 in a specially set up market area, where you could listen to a band, drink and shop ( you have to bargain, as prices are higher).
Maybe the waiters could be given a better training on customer service ( being friendly/smiley) as at the moment it's a bit hit and miss. In the mornings at breakfast the service was slow, it took ages to get a coffee top up. In the evenings we found that the best area to sit down for dinner is in a large gazebo ( although it's a smoking area). There are about 5 gazebos, we liked sitting in the 1st one, the one that is closest to reception. We found that people working there were giving the best service, carrying our plates, topping up drinks, etc

Each night the entertainment would start at 20:45, so it's best to get a seat early in order to get the best view.

The Spa. I had my gel nail varnish manicure done there and was greatly disappointed. There was only 4 colours to chose from. The uv lamp was dated, therefore it took extremely long time to dry the colour. The finish was bad as the top coat had bubbles and run on my skin. Some people get their treatments done there in preparation for weddings, I suggest you do your nails at home.

You will get hassled a lot by beach tradesmen trying to sell you bracelets and sarongs. Get a red 'do not disturb' flag from the pool area to reduce the amount of times you will get approached.

There are great facilities for sports ( we used one of six tennis courts every day, attended classes and aqua gym). There are also things like crazy golf, badminton, ping pong, kayaks, boats and other things to keep you occupied.

Oh, and don't be put off from coming here in European summer time ( mauritius winter). The weather forecast showed rain every day but in fact we only had ' real' rain once for about 15min.

Overall we were very pleased with our stay.

By the way, we came to the island twice and both times used a local guy called Firoz for airport transfers and day trips. He is about 60 years old but very lively and gives a very fair price. His actual profession is a wedding photographer, so if you want, I recommend you use him: firoz.auckloo@gmail.com.
