“Great hotel, but be aware of all inclusive billing!”
Reviewed July 19, 2011

La Pirogue is a beautiful hotel with stunning grounds and very friendly staff. However, one issue we came up against was with our bill at the end of the holiday. We opted to stay on an all inclusive basis, and had it explained that all items on the menus at La Pirogue and the sister hotel Sugar Beach marked with a green asterisk were included in the all inclusive offer. We therefore followed this rule, and also confirmed with waiting staff at each restaurant that we were all inclusive and therefore chose (what we thought was) the all inclusive options. At the end of the holiday we had a large bill for food and wine from various restaurants, which we questioned. The explanation was that we had wine served to us in a bottle, not by the glass, which was not in the all inclusive- although waiting staff did not advise us this when we ordered, and we even had it clarified many times by waiting staff that everything we ordered was all inclusive. We complained that this was not made clear at all by waiting staff, and therefore the items were removed from the bill. But, I thought I should out this up on here to warn everyone to check their bills and what is included in the all inclusive option at every opportunity, just to make sure!
Other than this (quite large) mishap, the hotel is beautiful, located on a peaceful beach and despite staff miscommunication, are very friendly and fun. Try the bubble rum cocktail- very nice!

We stayed at La pirogue in July 2011. My feedback on the hotel –

- Excellent property. Beautiful, clean, very well maintained and very de-stressing
- Amazingly friendly staff. Sometime which I would rate highly and is very important for me.
- Equally appealing and attractive for couples as well as family with kids.
- Great food with good breakfast and dinner spread. Nice a la carte for lunch.
- Nice and well stocked bars. A cool attraction is a ‘mobile bar’
- BIG and beautiful swimming pool
- Loads of inclusive and paid sports activities
- Nice rooms

They did goof up at one place though. The check-in was at 2 pm. We arrived at 4 pm and the room was not ready. We were asked to wait and were offered standard room (we had superior room) temporarily as we had kids. The room was ready by 5:30 pm. Now before we could complain about this, we were offered lunch for free for next day (we were on half board basis) and option for checking out at our convenience on last day of our stay. We never got a chance to complain. This is what I call service.

The day we checked in, it was my wife’s birthday, which I did mention at the time of reservation. Though expected, but they did brought a cake and non-alcoholic drinks for us that night during dinner. Nice of them to have actually thought of doing so with me asking for it. Thanks.

Special thanks to the Front Desk Manager.

Over all – highly recommended.

Room Tip: Take near Sugar Beach, facing sea. Ask for room upgrade to Superior if with kids.

We had a fabulous stay at this hotel and were very pleased with our choice. The hotel is one of about 5 in the Flic en Flac area on the west coast, which is good at this time of year as the west and north coast apparently experience sunnier, less windy weather round this time of year than the south and east, and we certainly were blessed weather wise.

One of the best things about the hotel is that you have the intimacy of the semi-detached thatched cottages (rather than the blocks in the other hotels in the same resort) and you have the benefit of using the facilities at the sister hotel, Sugar Beach, next door, too. We tried breakfast and dinner at Sugar Beach and we also used the shared spa (including a free hammam), the tennis courts and the gym.

We were very pleased that there were so many activities to do that were free - a lot of the watersports and also the use of the gym and classes at the gym. We also went on an organised bike ride, and as an example of other activities you could have a Creole lesson if you wanted. A particular favourite of mine was the aqua aerobics, which was held most mornings in the pool and was very fun. I don't have children, but we noticed that the kids club seemed very well set up and that the people looking after the kids were very friendly.

We liked the privacy of the rooms and the beautiful gardens they were in. In comparison to some of the other hotels in the area I believe the rooms may be a bit smaller, so before I arrived I was expecting them to be tiny, but we were in a standard room and it was absolutely fine and it felt spacious and was attractive.

The service in the hotel was generally good, particularly at dinner - the waiters were very attentive. We never felt the need to try any of the other restaurants save for Thatches (which serves the main buffet style meal) and one trip to Sugar Beach as the buffet was so extensive and tasty.

The hotel is very near a few local shops including a small supermarket, where we picked up some snacks and some things for our lunch. Also, because the hotel was apprarently the first in the area, they are located on the better stretch of the beach (the beach is also still good at Sugar Beach but after that becomes slimmer). As a tip if you go to any of the hotels in this area I do recommend you get beach shoes though as there is a bit of coral on the sand.

Casela bird park is only a 15 min taxi ride away from the hotel and I really recommend going there and walking with the lions. We also did a segway safari which was excellent and we had photos of us right next to zebras and ostriches!

If I have to think of a negative thing to say it is that the breakfast buffet is shared with some rather cheeky sparrows who sometimes try to eat the food from the buffet and the staff didn't always stop them from doing so. However, this really should not stop you from picking this hotel and I wasn't too bothered by it and I think this may well happen at other places. For me this was a minor issue and overall the hotel was amazing and I thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: I'd recommend asking for a room a bit further from the main area if you want an early night so t...

The resort is stunning with palm trees, a beautiful beach and crystal water. The thatched cottages are delightful, set in immaculately maintained gardens. The food is excellent, and the staff we met were absolutely brilliant- so helpful and friendly. I hate to name only a few of the staff but special thanks to Jeewan, Pravesh (little Mosquito), Nagawah, Cyn, Joselaine, Vijay and Avi.

We were there 6-15 June for the wedding of our son and his fiancée at the next door sister hotel Sugar Beach. It was fab to be able to use both hotels’ facilities as they have very different feels.

Going all-inclusive meant we didn’t have to think about prices and the choice at both hotels' restaurants and bars is extensive. The breakfast buffet is superb. The mini-bar is packed full and replenished daily. Plenty of tea bags and milk too.

We used the hotel taxis for trips- there is a set price but you can negotiate a bit. Don’t be put off by the shabby appearance of some of the villages, we felt perfectly safe walking around.

We had to leave our cottage by 12 noon, and as it was £50 to keep it longer, we left the cases with reception and booked a room for a half hour to get showered/changed etc before the airport taxi picked us up at 6pm. You can still eat, drink and use facilities until the pick-up.

It was a fabulous wedding, but also a truly memorable holiday.

We visited this hotel 3 years ago and had a wonderful time. We booked this trip via BA and got a very good deal. The room was spacious and our maid left us beautiful flowers every day.We found the charges for wifi/internet extremely expensive. There is a tiny internet cafe in the supermarket in Flic en Flac (which is peanuts in comparison) with friendly staff so we made use of that.
The staff in the main restaurant were incredibly friendly and helpful and had no problem if we chose not to have wine with dinner. We wanted to visit the botanical gardens so negotiated with one of the hotel taxi drivers to take us there and back - much easier than hiring a car or taking a rigid tour.
The spa (shared with the Sugar Beach) was wonderful and the 'stress relief' massage was wonderful.

Booked with letsgo2, paid a little extra for direct flights with BA (12 hours).
Private car from airport to hotel.
Arrived 10:00am local time and were allowed our room early.
Comfortable, clean, plenty of hanging space etc.
1st night, wine list.... I've left my glasses in the room so wife has wine list. She chose the cheapest bottle on there which turns out to be £60!!! Only bottle we bought from them all holiday.
Buffet, good but some strange combo's.
Our waiters for the almost entire two weeks, Vikash and Vikal, were top drawer, always going the extra mile.
The entertainment was good, the resident band tried to vary things a bit and the dancers were very good.
Plenty of free activities, cylcle rides (with a bit of tour guide slant), aqua gym every morning at 11.00 is a laugh and snorkling eqipment was free to hire (although the experience was only 5/10), aslo pedalo's, mini golf, salsa lessons and canoes all free.
The setting and pool is outstanding, the sister restaurant in Sugar Beach, Citronella's, was nice (and the wine started at only £21 a bottle).
Temps for 2 weeks starting 27th May were 27 degrees most days with a sea breeze. It rained for one hour on our third day, a bit cloudy on one or two other days.

Overall a very good experience, go there.

stayed here for a week and had a brilliant time.
the rooms were spacious and clean and very comfortable and after a week and half away without a TV was great to have a flat screen in our room.
Food everynight was good - sometimes its brilliant at other times it was fine. Breakfasts were great. We went half board and we are not big eaters or drinkers and just went to the shops outside the complex to get something to eat. we went to Cafe Tourisma which i would not recommend. My husband and I went there and had a cheese panini (with no cheese inside) and chips (very greasy). the only thing i would recommend would be the sugar cane juice which they make fresh.
At the restaurant in La Pirogue - some of the waiters can be abrupt and werent happy when we didnt order wine with our dinner but thats the customers perogative! it did feel like we were treated slightly different by some of the waiters because of this!
I would definitely recommend eating at Sugar Beach which you have to book with Reception. I would also recommend eating at the Mauritian restaurant. We did eat at Paul & Virginie but thought the Mauritian restaurant was better. Again these all have to booked through reception.
There is internet access and you can have wi-fi (at a cost) if you bring your laptop with you although this isnt configured for i-phones.
the evening entertainment was hit and miss. the dancers were good and the singers were sometimes excellent. a few were cringeworthy but it all added to the experience.

one night they had a management reception in the grounds(which took all day to set up) to which we were all invited - as we were hungry we went and had a quick look and then eat with the aim to come back afterwards. stalls were set up with lots of gifts and jewellery etc. By the time we came back (only an hour later) they were packed up and gone so i would recommend the hotel prolong this so people can eat and then look.

the beach was lovely and there are hawkers but they dont bother you. the pool was refreshing and cleaned religiously everyday and the grounds are stunning.
All in all, we had a brilliant honeymoon!
