Reviewed April 7, 2011

Our stay at La Pirogue on our honeymoon was everything and more than we could have hoped for. The staff were very accommodating and friendly, the facilities were great and our room was perfect. Thanks for making our time in Mauritius so special, we will be back. Nancy & Jeff Forster, Australia..

Reviewed March 19, 2011

I want to write a balanced review of La Pirogue, having stayed at the hotel for the second time in March. La Pirogue is good value, but it simply is not perfect. I will begin with the negative aspects of our stay. These comments are on the rating card we left at the hotel so I do hope that management takes note of these concerns.
Issues:
1. Smoking. While the majority of the first world has recognised that smoking causes cancer, La Pirogue seems to be in denial about this. Smoking seems to be encouraged in all areas of the hotel. The many European tourists seemed to not care at all about lighting up a cigarette, cigar , pipe, or whatever next to us and our four month old baby, in restaurants, at the pool or wherever. Smokers will never willingly deny themselves their disgusting habit and for that reason La Pirogue should have smoking and non smoking sections. Its a shame to see this going on in this day and age............
2. Front desk: despite our best efforts at communication the front desk made several booking and billing errors. Not a major issue but I would suggest checking the bill at the end of the stay
3. Airport transfer. Although not directly afilliated with the hotel, their contracted transfer service" Summertimes" tours made an error on our paperwork and booked us on an incorrect flight back to Johannesburg. Only after reconfirming our tickets myself was the error fixed. We would all have missed our flights if the mistake hadn't been picked up so be very careful to reconfirm your return flights accurately.
4. Large family groups. I dont think that La Pirogue can adequtely handle large groups. We travelled in a group of nine( 5 rooms) and despite several attempts to clearly state who was who, it never really worked to the point where my sister and I were congratulated on our wedding anniversary???. How can the front desk explain that despite us sending several clear emails about the room allocation in the group, they had it all wrong when we arrived, and had failed to fix it on their system by them time we left 7 days later?
5. Booking La Citronelle. This restaurant has to be booked 24 hours in advance. Despite trying every day for 3 days, first thing in the morning, we were told that the restaurant was fully booked by a " large group of people". We noted that the restaurant was almost empty every night and eventually protested and a booking was made for us. I'm not sure why this happened...????

The positive side
1. Most excellent location. The beach is one of the best on the island and the weather is great
2. The service of most of the people we encountered was very good
3. The food at Thatches, Paul and Virginie , La Citronelle and at Sugar Beach was very good. While it will always bug me that wine / alcohol is so expensive in Mauritius, they charges us a small corkage fee which helped.
4. The swimming pools at La Pirogue and Sugar beach are excellent.
5. The kids club helped us a lot with our four month old ...... much appreciated
6. Aura spa: had massages and several other treatments there and the service was cery good!
All in all it was a good experience. I am not sure if we would return. I will be looking for a hotel with improved non smoking facilities for our third trip.

We stayed at LA PIROGUE for 8nights during JAN 2011 with our 4 KIDS (AGE 5-11).
The resort is GREAT FOR HONEYMOONERS AND FAMILIES ALIKE. Great care is taken to ensure that both parents and kids have a wonderful time. The Kids Club is open until 22:00 at night-This gives parents time to enjoy dinner or some private time together. THERE ARE LOADS OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE KIDS TO ENJOY . We spent most days with the kids but they loved going to the kids club at least for a while every day. My daughter celebrated her birthday during our stay and the staff went out of their way to give her A WONDERFUL TIME. They baked her a delicious choc cake and she enjoyed a small party that she will always remember.
The rooms were average and new beds would be great. We had stiff backs after the first night but on mentioning this to management our beds were immediately changed and we were given feather pillows. We did not spend much time in the room which is a bit small but still comfortable and clean. FOR A BIG RESORT SERVICE IS EXCELLENT AND STAFF ARE HIGHLY EFFICIENT AND FRIENDLY.
Food is excellent and there is always a great selection . Evening entertainment is enjoyable. THE POOL IS BEAUTIFUL and the beach is nice although the coral is dead ,like the rest of Mauritius beaches. Snorkeling is average.
If you are keen on CLEANLINESS AND SERVICE YOU WILL ENJOY LA PIROGUE. IT IS A LOVELY HOTEL WITH BEAUTIFUL GARDENS AND A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN RELAX & UNWIND.
I suggest booking half board. You can enjoy meals at Sugar Beach Resort as well on Haf Board. Breakfast is a bit better at Sugar Beach but dinner is always extraordinary at La Pirogue especially when it is Mauritian Buffet. The Citronella Cafe makes lovely pastas and pizzas.

We stayed here for 8 nights after a trip to South Africa to finish off our honeymoon. Lovely hotel with plenty to do during the day. The room was ok, perhaps a little dated. I would probably upgrade if I went again. Nice beach, nice pool, excellent food. We also went to neighbouring Sugar Beach one evening. There was a very different vibe there, a much trendier bar and entertainment set up. The food was also excellent.
If I went back to Flic en Flac I would probably stay at Sugar Beach as I preferred the more modern feel, but La Pirogue was very good value for an excellent hotel.

We are both aged 50 and wanted to get married overseaas, romantic and value for money. We took time in searching for what we believed to be the right place for us and we were glad we did. La Pirogue and staff lived up to expectations and we had a lovely wedding and honey moon (mostly thanks to Aktar who organised everthing, including being a witness and his wife who also agreed to be our second witness). Some may say that the rooms are old fashiioned but we felt they were charming with their natural thatched roof and very much in keeping with their surrounding. We took a walk down to Sugar Beach (the Sister Hotel) and it is very modern and would not be out of place in Spain, hence we much preferred out thatched room. The hotel staff we found to be polite and helpfull and all times and we didn't have any difficulty in identifying the all inclusive items. We were staying on an all inclusive basis and left without anything to pay on the bill. There was always plenty of choice both in respect of food and drink. The mini bar supplied soft drinks and local booze - all of which we found to be adequate. If you really can't do without the 'branded' stuff then be prepared to pay for it as it is expensive, but that is no different from any other resort elsewhere in the world.

The beach was clean, sea was clear and warm and the sun beds ok. A little golf trolly patrolled the beach path with supplies of water, drinks and snacks - again all inclusive was identifiable.

A visit to the Fort in Port Louis is worthwhile as the views across the city etc are spectacular, plus the shops sell a variety of gifts at reasonable prices and have friendly polite staff.

Beautiful place and friendly people. Can't wait to go back.

Stayed at La Pirogue for 10 nights in October as part of our honeymoon. We really enjoyed our stay but we didn't think it felt like a 4 star hotel. The accommodation was a little tired and overall disappointing, and we did not find the staff to be particularly welcoming or friendly throughout our stay. The food was ok but the buffet set up and evening entertainment that accompanied it every night was not our thing unfortunately.

Having said all that, the setting and location of La Pirogue cannot be faulted - it is paradise - and having hired a car one day seems like one of the best spots on the island. The beach is trully beautiful and the swimming pool and sport activites put on by the hotel each day were great. There was always something to do!

We were all-inclusive which worked really well for us as we tended to miss breakfast and have lunch instead. We also liked the flexibility of being able to eat and drink at all of the other restaurants at La Pirogue and the Sugar Beach hotel next door. The drinks in particular did seem very expensive. You also have your mini bar replenished each day as part of all inclusive which we thought was great!

Having spent time at both La Pirogue and next door Sugar Beach we felt that Sugar Beach was probably more our thing. It has the same breathtaking location as La Pirogue but is just a bit more modern, staff more professional and no obtrusive poor evening entertainment!!

If you do go to La Pirogue we would highly recommend all inclusive and also requesting a water-front bungalow - something we really regretted not doing.

We stayed at La Pirogue for 10 nights, and it was paradise. The high standard was set when we first arrived. We arrived quite late at 9pm, & we were unsure if we were too late for food. We were greated by a very friendly member of staff who said we did not need to go to the reception desk, but could take a seat on the sofa's. After handing us a welcoming drink he explained he could check us in, & we could go straight through & help ourselves to the buffet - as it finished at 10pm. The food was amazing with a massive choice, & was themed as food from around the world. This high standard of service & food was maintained throughout our honeymoon. The room was very nice, & the housekeepers did a brilliant job. We went half board, as we were planning a lot of day trips & felt all inclusive would be a waste of money. For us this was right, & when we did have something for lunch we just had a snack of maybe chips & a soft drink - which for us both was 570rupees (about £12.39). Yes the food & drink is expensive, but we only needed lunch at the resort about 4 times, and only had 1-2 drinks each with our meal in the evening. A local beer was 155rupees (£3.37) & a soft fizzy drink 110rupees (£2.50). There is a local shop a short walk from the hotel, & they don't mind you placing drinks & food in the mini bar. The beach was lovely, but you will need aqua shoes - the sand consists of fine coral, & larger bits of coral as you go into the sea. The guys at the boat shed were great, & we booked the catamaran trip & parasailing with them - both great value, we saw dolphins with both activities (rare to see them when we were parasailing) but more likely on the catamaran trip. It was not obvious that you can take out snorkling gear, use kayaks pedelos & boats whenever you wanted. This was because each day there was a list of organised activities to include the aforementioned activites, but only at set times. It was only when we spoke to one of the guys that he said we could use the equipment whenever we wanted - by just signing a disclaimer. We also booked a number of trips with our Virgin rep, for which most of them are orgainsed through a local company called White Sands - they were very good. We went quad biking at 'Domaine de L'Etoile, where we went up a steep mountain, quite tough going steering the quad bike but well worth it. We went on a sub scooter & submarine with 'Blue Safari'. Visibility was very poor that day but the experience was worth doing. It was the most expensive trip but unique. The best trip was to Casela bird park with the 'interaction' with lions & cheetehs. We had originally wanted to walk with lions, & tried booking it when we first arrived. However it was fully booked, & the next date was when we were back home! I would strongly advise that people book this BEFORE their holiday. The interaction was 15 minutes with the animals & you could still stroke them - amazing & a must. Back to reviewing the hotel ! .....The buffet breakfast was lovely & you could have freshly made pancakes, crepes, fried eggs with bacon etc.. & cereral, fruit - lots. Just watch out for the birds trying to 'pinch' your food. There is a selection of resturants for the evening, but we stayed at Thatches, which was included in HBoard. This was a buffet & even though each night there were different themes, the basic dishes were always available such as, noodles, pizza, minute steaks, soup, salad. The entertainment was good each night, especially the sega, african & indian nights. We could hear the music in our bungalow (room 111) which continued until 11.30pm, but I got used to it & didn't find it a problem. Each week they do a 'meet the management night' which they didn't advertise & was only told at our welcoming meeting. This was great as there was free sparkling wine, rum cocktails & local sellers with stands selling products. One note to mention is mauritians do like & expect you to haggle. We did with taxi drivers & in tourist shops, saving us money. Overall we could not fault the hotel with fantastic food & service & lots to do. You could easily spend your holiday at the hotel, but there are some great trips if you wish to explore. On the day we were leaving, our pick up was not until 6pm, & we had to check out by 11am. We had a option of leaving luggage at reception, or opting for late check out. We went for late check out & stayed in our room, which was well worth it, although costing 2500ruppes (£54). The total bill for us both was 11,629rupees (£252), which I believe was good. We did spend about £800 on trips, but it was a once in a lifetime trip. We are dreaming when we can go back.
