“delightful resort super holiday”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

My wife and I made a return visit to the sugar beach with some friends after a previous visit 4 years ago . Well it is one thing to achieve certain standards but to maintain them we believe is a even harder task . We were not disappointed the staff were pleasant polite and most helpful from the management through to the cleaners . If you want to relax on a white sand beach , be pampered and indulge in fantastic food and fine wines then you should not look any further than the sugar beach resort . We would like to say a special thank you to Sorab and Rajesh based at the infinity pool area , they were great nothing was too much trouble , and also to Christelle and Kezzie who waited on us in the Tides restaurant on most days at Lunch time (also try the ala carte dinner at Tides in the evening it is out of this world ! Our room was kept spotless by the cleaner as was the whole resort .It was also our friends wedding anniversary Nigel and Kim well we can not believe what the staff done for them in recognition of their anniversary with no charges or prompting it was wonderful . To sum up simply it was Amazing A big thank you to all the staff and management of the Sugar Beach Resort . Any one who cares to read this should seriously consider a tropical beach holiday to here as we have stayed in many 5 star resorts around the world and this takes some beating location and standard wise

Room Tip: all the rooms are great with super views though ask for one in the infinity pool area

We visited for nine nights for our honeymoon mid November and had a wonderful stay at the Sugar Beach hotel. From the moment we arrived we were looked after by all of the hard-working team at Sugar Beach. We were greeted with a cool towel and refreshing citronella drink on arrival which was gratefully received after 13+ hours travelling! Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, any question or problem you have is dealt with swiftly and easily making for a relaxing stress free holiday. We were introduced to the manager on arrival which was nice and also bumped into him numerous times during our stay so assume he is fairly hands on and this is test amount to the happy hardworking staff who we really cannot compliment enough. We were lucky enough to be given a room with a breathtaking sea view by the quiet pool which we highly recommend (room 719). We were entirely happy with our stay in this spacious and immaculately clean room.
We loved and suggest you eat at Tides, Citronellas(our fave!), and Paul & Virginie(at Pirogue hotel next door which guests can use the amenities of). Incidentally Pirogue seemed just as nice as Sugar Beach if you are staying there or currently choosing where to stay...we ate at their buffet also which we enjoyed and the staff and the entertainment seemed equally as great.
The Sugar beach buffet breakfast is superb, amazing fresh fruit, piping hot freshly cooked breakfast and delicious waffles and pancakes!
Tides was great for entertainment, we visited most nights danced and enjoyed the fabulous cocktails, special thanks goes out to Steneo who made sure we enjoyed our last night!
Top tips: 1)Everyone on Trip advisor suggests buying the plastic shoes due to the sharp coral however we purchased them and the sand goes inside and feels like sandpaper so uncomfortable we threw them! We swam and stepped carefully and were fine. Flip flops are fine for walks on beaches as well. If you have material surf style shoes these are probably much better.
2) On three occasions we called to make dinner reservations at various restaurants. Every time we were told they were fully booked which we found strange! Never one to give up easily we visited the restaurants directly and booked tables with no problem at all so highly recommend you do this.
The beaches, pools, restaurants, toilets and grounds are all immaculately well cared for and we would love to return and highly recommend Sugar Beach. The hotel and grounds are so spacious you are never on top of one another even when the hotel is almost full which is also great.
We were also invited for cocktails on the lawn with other guests one evening which was a lovely idea.
We booked to play golf at Le Touressrok hotel on the east of the island as an extra treat and decided to do the offer we received on arrival of a two night stay there. This hotel is 5* so more expensive than Sugar Beach for drinks especially but the experience and beaches here are even better! Totally recommend staying here as part of your stay at Sugar beach. Read also my review for La Touressrok.
We also hired a car to get to and from the airport. We visited all the tourist attractions and found it really easy to get around the island.
Thank you Sugar Beach team for making our honeymoon perfect!

My husband and I arrived at Sugar beach November 3rd this year for our honeymoon. From the moment we arrived we had a fabulous time, and have never felt so relaxed! Our room was spotless and our view magnificent. The beautiful girl who cleaned our room would leave little flowers she picked each day which was such a touching gesture.
All the staff were very attentive, we never had a problem with anyone. The food was lovely, and an excellent variety. I especially loved breakfast with the variety of fresh fruits, and juices. You could have cereal, omelette, full English breakfast, whatever, it was there. We were always given a lovely poolside table and very well looked after by Antish and Soobis.
The grounds were immaculate, and the people who worked there just got on and did their job but always with a smile and a hello.
We loved the Tides bar, and once again the service fantastic, with good music and entertainment. The meals in the Tides restaurant were outstanding. We were invited to a honeymoon meal there, on the beach, the table was all beautifully laid out and the napkins made into swans. It was very romantic, and we had a lovely meal. It was a really special night, and we were made feel very welcome.
Laying around by the pool, or beach was so relaxing. Yes there are the locals trying to sell their goods along the beach (all with special permits), some people were obviously frustrated by this, but if you said no thanks that was it and they left you alone. We personally were not bothered and had many an interesting conversation with some of these lovely people who are simple trying to make a living.
We did witness a few 'off' people who were guests as ourselves, and could see that they thought the staff should be waiting on them hand and foot. Rude with no thanks. So when guests who stay and treat these lovely people with the respect they so deserve then obviously they will be looked after in return.
The drink service around the pool for us was outstanding, whether it be coffee or alcohol. We especially loved Frezley, a lovely guy, great smile and very funny. He was very attentive, and when it came to leaving both my husband and I felt quite sad having to say goodbye to him.
My husband played football with the pool guys which they arrange each day and ask people if they want to join in. There was a chef cooking pancakes each day by the pool area for the guests, and one day a chef cooked a beautiful curry step by step, even giving us all who watched the recipe and for the cocktail 'Mauritian smile' which became a favourite of ours!
For us it was an amazing experience, relaxing, beautiful beach with crystal clear water, pool area and immaculate hotel. We woke up each day to this incredible view and felt like we had to pinch ourselves to believe it was real and enjoy every second because the time went too fast!
Everyone has their own opinion, but for us it was the most amazing experience, and we both have to say that Sugar beach and all it's staff made our stay a truly amazing one. A honeymoon we will never forget, and yes, without any hesitation we are going back, and cannot wait!

Room Tip: We were on the first floor, near the pool area because we wanted a balcony and ocean views. You cou...

Having read many of the previous reviews of this property i am pleased to find out that it wasn't just us who mentioned the poor service in the hotel. That sounds very generalised and i will highlight the people who this doesn't apply to later. On first arrival at our 10 day honeymoon paradise we were checked in quickly and bags taken to our room no problems. Sat in the foyer with a member of staff and was given an arrival cocktail and hot towel whilst being informed on the processes and location of various aspects of the hotel. Things were looking good and hopes were definitely high. The hotel surroundings are great and well-kept with constant maintenance by the grounds people. The pools are large and well kept and there are plenty of sunbeds located on the beach and around the pool area. There are plenty of inclusive watersports activities to have a go at and keep you entertained throughout the day.

The major problem we encountered was with staff service which was absolutely laughable at times. We were left waiting at the seating point on numerous occasions as staff chatted amongst themselves or wandered round looking busy until they felt they had to come and seat you. Breakfast was a particular nuisance and after waiting to be seated we were asked if we would like tea or coffee with our meal. 8 out of the 10 days that we were there absolutely nothing was brought and i needed to ask to be given the drinks. One particular day we were left without drinks and after asking if we could have some the member of staff decided he was going to ignore us for the remaining part of our holiday. He deliberately made it known and offered all surrounding couples top up drinks but never us which i found to be a little childish for a 50+ year old man. The attitude in general of people at meal times was just plain rude and the looked as if they would rather be anywhere else. This wasn't the case for every single member of staff and there were individuals who were pleasant and provided great service.

Trying to book a table for your evening meal can be a bit of a fuss and you may need to wake up early to go and do this. Don't book over the phone as the one time we did this they had no booking for us when we arrived so make sure it is done in person. Restaurants and food is lovely and of a very good standard and even on the all-inclusive plan there is plenty of choice to suit all tastes.

The rooms are pretty standard and have the basic amenities available but do the job. They are in definite need of some refurbishment as showers are mouldy and missing parts, sockets hanging off walls and just looking very tired in general. The music from the Tides bar can be heard until late as the doors on the balconies have large gaps underneath but this wasn't a particular problem for us.

The guys at the watersports hut are great and you can have a laugh with them and they will help you out as much as possible. They teach you the basics to all the activities and then it’s up to you to make a fool of yourself from that point. Also a thank you to the guys at the Gym and Tennis centre for their help. They are polite and good fun with some good activities and classes available throughout the day. We went on a guided bike ride with Dennis who is one funny guy. If you want to know anything about activities and things in the area he is your man.

In summary the surrounds and building are great, pools lovely and activities well run and varied. The rooms are definitely in need of some TLC and would greatly benefit from this. The food is a great standard and the restaurants well themed with good, varied food choices available. The service in general is very poor and to be made to feel like you are deliberately being ignored is not something i have ever experienced on my holiday before. The service at La Pirogue next door was much better and being able to use the facilities of both hotels this may be the better option. Will i be recommending Mauritius to others as a lovely holiday destination, yes; will i be recommending Sugar Beach as a place to stay? Not likely.

Room Tip: Rooms located at the front of the hotel are nicer but i guess they cost more as well

We stayed start of November 2013, had a lovely room 510 over looking the beach near to everything and only 20 metres from the beach. Room was very comfortable & clean our maid kept it immaculate.
Having read previous reviews before going was not sure what to expect, can't understand how anyone can find fault.
We opted for the all inclusive which if you like a drink I would recommend as prices are high. The all inclusive does not include all meals on the menus there are supplements but there is more than enough choice included in the All inclusive menu. The buffet was amazing never seen such a large selection of choices.
We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary whilst away our rep informed reception and everyone went out of their way to help us mark our special occasion, our maid covered our room in lovely flowers towels in the shapes of elephants & swans, we had a bottle of sparkling wine left for us along with chocolates in the room. the management team asked us to eat at tides where we were given a candle lit table on the beach and had the most memorable seafood meal, again it seemed everyone was up to spoil us as as we where finishing our meal a chocolate cake with sparklers was brought out to us.
The resort itself is kept in immaculate condition, the staff including gardeners do a fantastic job.
The beach is beautiful & very clean you do need jelly shoes for when in the water as the dead coral can be sharp, never had a problem getting a sun bed on the beach or by the pools at anytime during the day. Only see a few people getting up early to mark out sun beds with towels which was a bit pointless as so many beds available.
We also used the bars & restaurant next door at La Pirogue loved the beach bar.
Having been to many lovely places would recommend Sugar beach to everyone.

Our rep organised a boat trip for us with Adrian's went to see dolphins, snorkelling and had lunch on a beach on a uninhabited island brilliant day out.

After hearing so many fantastic reviews and having it recommended to us by so many people including travel agents we had high expectations for this resort. Seems maybe they were a little too high in this instance. Check in process was fast and efficient however once escorted to our hotel room, we discovered that we had been given two king single beds despite requesting a king bed prior to our arrival (I was there with my partner for our fifith anniversary). I spoke with a staff member and asked if there was any possibility if we could have the bedding ararngements changed. I was that it could be altered the following day and that we would be notified. That never ended up happening and we were stuck with two king single beds for our entire day despite speaking to staff about the issue every day. I also spoke to another couple who were staying at the hotel on their honeymoon and were also given king single beds that could not be changed... The attention to detail was poor, with the wrong mail being left in our mailbox twice despite notifiying reception. The light outside our hotel room (758) was insecure and the shower seal in the ensuite was peeling off. One of our pool towels was also dirty one of the days we went to the pool. These are only minor issues and if we had have been paying less and staying at a lower star hotel I would have not even mentioned these issues however when you are paying a lot of money to stay at these properties, I personally expect better. I am well travelled and have stayed at much nicer properties for a lower cost in the past. On a positive note, the food at Mon Plaisir Bar and Restaurant was amazing and the buffet selection was huge. The property is absolutely stunning, the pools are beautiful and the gardens are immaculate. Definitely not the worst place to stay and would consider going back if we were guaranteed a king bed and better service but I think there are nicer properties on the island for same or similar cost.
