LUX* Belle Mare
Ranked #1 of 13 Hotels in Belle Mare
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The hotel's motto is luxury is overrated and this hotel is definitely not luxurious.
This hotel review is from an American perspective. In my estimation, 70 percent of the guests at this hotel are from Europe, and the rest are from South Africa or Asia for the most part. As an American, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
The good:
1) The staff is really friendly and tries their best to make you feel happy and your stay enjoyable.
2) The grounds are beautiful.
3) The pool is beautiful, but it’s not heated
3) Outdoor massage was very nice.
The bad:
1) The food is horrible and expensive. I did not book the all-inclusive package therefore meals were not included in my rate. To add the meals package is approximately $90 USD per day per person for breakfast and dinner. That does not include drinks. From a European perspective that is about that about 70 Euros. The meals package does not include the specialty restaurants which have an up-charge. I can't remember the exact price for the upcharge but it may have been another $40 per person to eat at the specialty restaurant if you are on a meal plan.
The worst part is that the food is horrible. We arrived late at night and the hotel suggested that we eat at the buffet. After being told the price, I think $50 USD per person, we choose to eat at the specialty restaurant. Initially we were told that there were not reservations available but then we said we would just go eat somewhere in town, and the hotel immediately found a seat for us. They do not want you to leave to eat outside of the property. They told us that 90% of the guests were on the meal plan. Every day they hounded us to make reservations at a restaurant when they saw us. They also called our room on more than one occasion and asked why we had not made reservations at one of the restaurants. Most hotel guests don't leave the hotel property unless they are going on a tour arranged by the hotel.
The next night we left the property for dinner and there is a good restaurant on the road which leads to the hotel (Symon’s, I believe). There aren't many restaurants near the hotel because the hotel is isolated. However , there are a few and there are actually good. There are two right next door to each other. One is really good and the other is just ok, but the average entree is probably 8USD.
The food options on the property are also very limited and bad. The Peking duck my wife ordered was full of fat and bones. We ordered the flambéed lobster and they had to try twice at the table to light the lobster. The first time they brought the lobster out they tried to light it, but they were unsuccessful after several attempts they bought it back into the kitchen. On their second try, they were unsuccessful again and finally they poured a good bit of alcohol on the lobster and finally got it to light. The lobster was horrible, cool and tasted like alcohol.
2) Hard mattress. To resolve the issue the hotel put a pad on the mattress but the bad was still as hard as a rock.
3) Bad beach. The beach is not very swimmable. It is very shallow and windy along with a lot of seaweed. The other side of the island has better beaches. I would suggest you skip Mauritius and go directly to the Seychelles which is much nicer.
4) Bugs: Complained about bugs in the room. The hotel sent someone and the guy told us don't worry about the bugs they are not harmful, rather than attempting to remedy the situation.
5) The body scrub we got was shorter than the time state in the brochure.
6) Most of the picture on this website are professional, and make the resort look rooms look much better than they are.
Suggestions
1) If you must stay at the hotel do not eat there.
2) Make sure you have a rental car to visit other beaches, cities, markets, and restaurants.
3) I would suggest you skip Mauritius and go directly to the Seychelles which is much nicer.
4) I would note that most of the people who reviewed this property have only written one review.

Ashish M, Manager at LUX* Belle Mare, responded to this reviewResponded November 10, 2012

Greetings from Lux* Belle Mare, Mauritius.

Thank you for your comment here on Trip Advisor for us. First, a sincere thank you for your praise for the team of ours as also the gardens and the pool of ours. We sincerely believe our team is amongst the finest anywhere in the world and thank you for highlighting the same at the beginning of your review. We understand that the resort did not stand up to your expectations.

We appreciate constructive feedback from our guests and we are taking your feedback with the utmost seriousness it deserves. At the same time, for the benefit of all our future travellers and readers of this forum, we would like to reply to some of the points mentioned by you.

1. We would like to highlight that the resort does not charge any extra additional prices for the menus offered at the speciality restaurants for guests on meal included meal plans. There are a few preparations and a few theme evenings which are listed separately and clearly (besides the standard A la Carte menus) which have supplement prices and these are charged as per standard charging practices followed by all resorts and hotels. Infact, We as Lux* Belle Mare take pride in offering the option of dining in any of our restaurants at no extra charge for guests on meal included meal plans.

2. The resort team believes in going the extra mile towards making the guests happy and resolving any issues the guests may have. This includes the desire by the team to squeeze in an extra table at a fully reserved restaurant to not have a guest leave upset with the restaurant or the resort. With the seating in the speciality restaurants limited and the restaurants working with prior reservations, the option to book the restaurants is likewise offered to the guests so as not to inconvenience them. Again, since getting a table on the first night of your stay was difficult, the team tried to overcome this problem on the subsequent days by trying to confirm your dinner plans. We sincerely believe these attempts to find solutions to a guest’s request of a table in the restaurant should be not looked at otherwise or with any other commercial angle.

3. We continuously work on our food and beverage standards and several positive reviews on this forum and otherwise on our food standards have been extremely positive and encouraging. We have taken note of your feedback and will review the standards appropriately.

4. The resort regularly cleans and maintains the beautiful stretch of beach we are blessed with. As a destination as well, Mauritius offers a complete holiday experience with a perfect balance of relaxation, rejuvenation on the beach and explorations of local culture and flavours as compared to the other pearls in the Indian ocean like Seychelles.

5. We would also like to point out to all readers of this forum and future travellers that while we do sincerely believe that there is always a learning for us and we work on ways to improve our standards and offerings; comments referring to “the number of reviews posted by other reviewers” are best not replied to.

Once again, I would like to thank you for your review on our property and hope to welcome you back to Lux* Belle Mare and I am most certain that with our magnificent team, we will be able to change your impressions of the resort.

Sincerely,

Ashish Modak
General Manager

Staff simply amazing. Happy, friendly , Attentive- Ramesh and Ravin are fantastic managers and their high quality of customer service is reflected by all staff throughout the hotel.

Loved the buddah bar/cafe del mar tunes playing softly through hotel. Nice vibe from Moment we arrived to when we sadly said goodbye .

The addition of the huge  Bean bags around the pool/ beach perfect for babies/kids and adults to fall asleep on

Superb pool designed perfectly for kids. Best/largest family pool we have ever used. Our 5yr old is a waterbaby and was in there literally from 10am to  5pm non stop. Parents can relax in knowledge life guard watching and the pool depth only up to 5yr olds shoulder height in bottom pool. one of the biggest plus points of the hotel for us.

Cafe lux. Great idea. Flat whites and latte .

Decent evening entertainment if u want to watch/listen. Our daughters loved all the various dancing. We all loved  the 3 piece guitar/violin combo. Very entertaining during dinner.

Great kids club. Our 3 and 5 year old love the teddy tennis lessons every morning. Staff excellent

Buffet continues to offer decent quality food. Our Kids give us a maximum 45min window until their attention goes. Decent bottle of wine, a starter main and desert and we are done. Kids food satisfied our fussy eaters

Beach bar- superb setting for lunch. Especially if u get a table on the beach. Decent fresh mediterranean cuisine and amazing views.

Midweek, front office manager Anatolie  managed to upgrade our room to a ground floor  lagoon suite. I think best family room at hotel. Virtually on the beach. Large veranda. Quiet location . Decent sized living area and large bathroom. Needs modernising but very comfortable. View breath taking when u open the shutters in the Morning. Worth every penny.

Fantastic beach. Stunning views . Loved the free Watersports  including wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayak, catamarans etc

Did 2 scuba dives- swam with turtles, manta rays , tuna, barracuda etc. hadnt dived for a few years so after a quick pool refresh I was off. Excellent dive staff.

Overall we had a wonderful week. 10days would be perfect. It was our Second time at the resort. Will return for Easter

Truly recommend this hotel. The staff is friendly, the food is excellent, great beach (one of the very few hotels that have a proper one!) and excellent sport facilities for kids.
Don't forget to ask for Vicky on the beach in front of the villas for an extraordinairy day out on the sea.

Located an hour or so from the airport, Lux Belle Mare is on the NE coast on a pristine beach. The swimming pool is probably one of the best for young (under 5) children. It's large, shallow and beautifully designed. The property is large, but cozy. Although there are many activities outside the hotel, it is too easy just to chill out at the resort. Service is outstanding and warm.

The biggest criticism of the hotel is its food offering. Apart from the large buffet dinner, they have 3 small restaurants, which are often fully booked. Some restaurants are operational on certain days only. During our stay we had the pleasure to meet the GM and discuss our feedback. He was extremely keen to solicit feedback and act on it. I believe some changes have already been completed. With such a focused management team, I think the hotel will continue to attract many satisfied guests.

The rooms are looking a bit dated and a face-lift would be in order.

The breakfast on the beach is definitely worth trying.

On our way back (from Seychelles), we had a transit in Mauritius for 1 day. We had initially booked a hotel close to the airport, but based on our initial experience, we decided to forfeit that and return to LUX.

Kudos to all at Lux Belle Mare!

We recently spent one week of relaxation and bliss at the 5 star Lux* Belle Mare Resort in Mauritius.
It was outstanding and this is evident in their excellent Resort Manager Mr Ashish Modak and his management and staff.
The room was beautiful and immaculately clean, the service great, the front Office staff and Concierge were exceptional and accommodating in all requests.

I would like to make mention of a few of the staff that were incidental in making our stay such a lovely one, Kamlesh, Andre, Jessica, Marius, Natasha, Deloris, but to only mention but a few. However I would not like to leave out anyone and apologise if I have, as all the staff were absolutely outstanding. Cleaning staff, room service, pool staff, food and beverage staff, garden and beach staff, all there to make ones stay the best.

We really enjoyed the delicious varied breakfasts which catered for all tastes and cultures.
The evening meals were exceptional with wonderful chef- made pastries and desserts.
On commenting most favourably on one of the evening desserts, the following evening Mr Laval, the Chef, made my husband and I two desserts just for us which was such a surprise and lovely gesture. Absolutely the best of cuisine.
We will definitely go back to Lux*Belle Mare as soon as possible.

The resort is wonderful with white sandy beaches and a large swimming pool. Rooms are excellent and well equipped. The maintenance is excellent and the best part is that the entire staff makes you feel wanted. We are vegetarians and options for us were really limited, but the entire staff did everything to cater to our needs and prepared Indian vegetarian dishes on demand. Now the Indian preparation was not the best but the staff going that extra mile to accommodate our needs is something we really appreciated. They have a telephone booth where you can make international calls for free, so not surprisingly chances of finding it free are less, but nevertheless helps you remain in touch with folks back home. A word of caution on the location, depending on what you are looking for in your vacation the location could be good or bad. If you are looking for a relaxed holiday with access to beautiful white sandy beach then this is an excellent location, but if you are looking to visit places and do sightseeing then this location is a little off the regular circuit and you could spend about 2 hrs everyday for the commute. All in all an excellent resort and we came back very satisfied.

The overall property is beautiful, done in white with a shade of grey. Spanking clean, courteous staff, nice rooms, great pool, and a nice beach. Nice DVD collection, so you can watch movies in-room.However, the veg options are pretty limited and the food is very average. The only problem we faced was at the time of checkout, which took half an hour, since there was only one person to attend to all the guests checking out. Would surely recommend. Go half board.
