“Peaceful place with excellent beach”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

We had stayed here for 6 night & 7 days for our honeymoon and indeed it was memorable one. On our arrival we were greeted with welcome drink we was really refreshing. Our check in was very quick. Our room was very good. Its amenities were very good. Room was quite spacious. It had good balcony. View from balcony was good. We did not find a single person in the staff who was rude. Everyone had a smilling face, especially "Desire" receptionist was very kind. He helped us out of the way in many ways. We were given catamaran cruise as complimentary, but we realised that catamaran trip was going to be taken in north east where there are no dolphins. If we want to watch dolphins we need to go to west. Hence we requested spa instead of catamaran. Spa was the highlight of our stay. It was excellent. If you stay here please experience spa here. Sittle the girl working in Sanctury Spa is excellent. Management should arrange catamaran in west only then its worth. Hotel property is very good. Its pool is awesome. We had few issues in food. The hotel has got two restaurants one is The Dinning Room and other is The Plantation. Buffet breakfast is at The Dinning room which is quite good. We actually liked the variety of fruits. Main issue was for dinner since we were vegetarian and for vegetarian food we need to meet chef since there is no variety in the dinning room. First two days we were not at all satisfied with the food quality, its taste and the variety. Then we tried The Plantation were we met Chef Ram. Chef Ram is very polite and he was kind enough to prepare good dishes for our dinner. After two days of struggle in food we finally got good food. Water and phone call rates are too costly in the hotel. I would advise to get local Emtel mobile card and water & juices from super markets. Overall stay was very good & memorable one.

Higene is absent at all: huge amount of rats all over the hotel as well as cockroaches. DONT GO WITH KIDS! Dearea and intestinal flu hit our kid and my wife the very first day. Our friends (two more couples with kids) suffered the same.

Service vary from one member of stuff to another, but in totsl is very poor. Apart from that, my ipad was stolen from the locked room. Presumably by stuff. I've heard no sorry from the hotel and no regret.

Food quality is very below average. No fresh juices (only from packs), short menu. No seafood at all in the menu. Kids menu is very unhealthy: french fries, hard to chew nuggets, pizza. If you ask smth not from the menu, kitchen collapses. Waiters rarely understand your needs in english. Rice noodles they get as fried noodles all the time, so triple check your order.

No diving center!!! They send you to another hotel though the instructors there are quite all right.

Very dirty, unattended beach full of broken glass, cans etc. Next neighbouring beach is public so thousands of locals occupying hotel beach as well as all shore line is public.

The hotel is located on narrow strip between sea and the road so very loud traffic you can hear in the rooms. Wifi in the main bar only and usualy doesnt work at all. If you install your own in the room for 75€ it may not work as well and when working the speed is not enough to watch videos, skype and bulky web pages. The minibar you should call them to refill, isually they forget to check it.

Spa is very low quality but very expensive.

The whole hotel is low quality but pricey.

Dear Sir/Madam

We wish to thank you most sincerely for your recent stay with us and the time you have taken to share your comments on Trip Advisor. We have reviewed carefully your comments and definitely they are not a mirror image of our quality of service that we provide to our guests.

It is unfair to qualify the hotel as untidy, dirty and awful, as there is an ongoing cleaning process carried out throughout the hotel and supervised by competent team members and your comments are quite surprising as we haven’t had any such comment so far.

We wish to inform that being in a tropical island we cannot deny the presence of those pests; however they are garden shrews and not rats as you mentioned .Our pests’ controllers regularly controlled those pests to ensure complete eradication.

Regarding your Ipad, please note that your statement has been taken into consideration and the inquiry is still underway. However during this particular period most of our guests were traveling with their Ipad and till so far we have never recorded of any loss whatsoever.

We wish to assure you that an action plan has already been implemented to remedy those areas of service that need improvement and will certainly assist to maintain our passion and service attitude towards our guests.

We reiterate our thanks for bringing forward these comments to our attention and we hope that we have brought clarifications to your comments.

Thank you and kind regards,

The Management

Had two really nice nights here, even though it was quite windy. The beach here is really nice, long and wide. The rooms are nice, there is nothing wrong with them, but no real wow factor. The suites on the other hand are really, really nice. The food is really good, if you are staying for a long stay the fact that you only have two restaurants for dinner could be a little boring but they have a varied menu so for a week it would be fine. The pool area is really nice and service all around is also really good.

I would love for them to remove the plastic chairs around the resort, but thats just me hating on plastic chairs on 5 star resorts. :)

So not the place to go if you are looking for the best of the best, but excellent value for money!

Room Tip: Ocean view or ocean front.

Started this year at The Residence to rest the brain, get some tan and vitamins in the breeze of the Indian Ocean. This was a good choice. To me traveling is about seeing new things, trying that strange thing on the menu, learning to pronounce new names, finding yourself in conversations that make you reevaluate your values and views and feeling a new kind of air dance in your lungs and mind. Hospitality on the other hand is knowing that somebody takes care of all the practical details that allow me to focus on and enjoy the things above. The break from everyday life. And also knowing that people are there to help you solve minor or major problems. In my experience it comes down to a combination of practical tangible things like a clean room, fresh food, good logistics and aesthetic pleasure - and individuals that have smiles and an attitude that make your day better, that care and that make you laugh. I found all this at The Residence. I have returned home with new ideas and impressions and the scent of frangipani and ylang ylang and the warm smiles that surrounded us will stay in my mind for a very long time. I hope to return to The Residence.

The Residence, Mauritius is the place if you are looking for romantic holidays or honeymoon. It was our honeymoon and also our first international trip so we were little nervous about quality of hotel before leaving India but when we reached our hotel all the nervousness was gone at the reception and lobby area itself. The staff at The Residence was very warm, polite and friendly and took very good care of us through out stay days. The property is very well maintained and each and every area in the hotel is kept very clean and hygenic. Rooms, Resturants, Lobby, Swiming Pool, Beach area. From my personal experince of travelling to different indian cities and staying at different category hotels and properties i have not seen the service as good as The Residence, Mauritius.

Room Tip: All category rooms are well placed at this hotel, Ocean View rooms are good value for money as you h...

FIve years ago we had 8 wonderful nights at the Residence and promised ourselves we would return for our 5th anniversary if we could. Five years on, we bit the bullet and booked 16 nights having considered staying one week in the north and coming to "our hotel" for the second week. But would it be as wonderful as we remembered it?? It is always a risk returning.....
From the moment we arrived and were greeted with the same level of customer care and personal attention we knew it hadn't lost any of its magic. The beginning of September is the start of the season and the weather was warm, windy (always a relieving breeze) and only a couple of questionable days of drizzle or rain. We were able to get our beautiful original room (Ocean Front View) and this time we did take advantage of the unpacking service while we wandered and sighed with wonderment ....perfect!!
The food is stunning....a good level of fine dining with plenty of imagination to last us the 16 nights. The staff are superb and despite the financial attractions of the cruise market, many were there from 5 years before. The Plantation is a special place to eat whether the Saturday buffet (what a selection!) or any other evening. Rajesh was running this 5 years ago and is now head of Food and Beverage and runs a tight ship. Now Pritam has learnt from him and the Plantation is now in his hands and he has some lovely staff working for him. Bruno is now running the main restaurant and has a fantastic team and the food is stunning...and like the others is charm personified! Whoever you interact with knows who you are and make your holiday special.....many people return and the key for 5* hotels is to give you a reason to return.....the whole team do this every day!
We were on half board thinking the excellent breakfast would be more than enough to see us to dinner.....well with the complementary VIP card as a returning guest, we were tempted....almost every day....to have the tempura prawns or something from the lunch menu....served on the beach....how decadent! Kiran was the "beach attendant" who looked after us 5 years ago and 5 years on is now in a senior role and was simply the best person you could want to take care of you, think ahead of what you would like, and all with genuine humility. Thank you!! Even the beach hawkers are polite, not pushy and interesting...we bought a pashmina 5 years ago from Jimmy...and 5 years on we bought another two from him. Be polite, engage in conversation as they are lovely people, haggle as you would expect but only buy if you want to. We did play tennis 11 days on one of the three very good courts and a couple of amazing massages....the spa has been even further upgraded and has a deserved reputation!!
Car rental for two days, one day north round to Port Louis and one day South.....at last we have seen this beautiful, clean, totally friendly island and will see more next time. We don't normally like organised trips but the catamaran trip was included and was really great fun....well run, good and plentiful food barbecued on board and a couple of hours on Ile de Serf was enchanting.
At the start of the holiday there were a few children but not many and the facilities for their entertainment are excellent.
Changed money at the airport when we arrived as you can negotiate between exchange companies for a good deal there....worth remembering!
I have probably forgotten lots and having promised that we would write in Trip Advisor as we were SO well looked after, I must apologise to the whole team for the lateness of this review....our anniversary meal was special .....and we were absolutely given so many reasons to want to return....WE SHALL. Thank you!!!

Room Tip: We have been fortunate to have an Ocean Front Room on both occasions but everyone we spoke to was ve...
