“The ultimate beach-front family hotel in the sun.”
Reviewed November 11, 2011

There are many hotels in Mauritius on the beach, and many more elsewhere on the world's shores, but this one is quite special. From the moment you arrive, it's like being in a dream second home. The service and attention to detail are extraordinary, with nothing being too much trouble. The atmosphere is so relaxed, and guests don't have a care in the world. Watersports are free (yes, all watersports including water skiiing), the water by the pool and sea is included, you choose where you want to eat (whether on your balcony, in the room or in one of the restaurants) and that's included, and the kids have a great time in the kids club, on the glass bottomed boats, snorkelling, learning tennis or boules (oh the list goes on). For the adults the fish is freshly caught, and the wine list is a good one for all pockets and tastes. For a truly relaxing break, there's are few better places in the world for parents and children alike.

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon trip to South Africa starting with a week at the Residence Mauritius. We have both stayed at great hotels all over the world but NOTHING compares to this place! It was SIX STAR all the way.

The resort is just breathtaking. Very peaceful, beautifully decorated and luxurious. Our room was fantastic, every amenity was at our fingertips, the pool, the spa, the gym, the water sports! The FOOD! We had fine dining at every meal and absolutely incredible service.

The thing the separates the Residence Mauritius from other 5 Star Resorts is the PEOPLE. I have never met kinder, more generous, friendly staff in my life. They anticipated our needs at every moment, no detail was forgotten and many of them truly became friends.

We hope to return to the Residence in the future and in the meantime, will tell all of our fellow Americans, that the STAY is well worth the long JOURNEY to get there!!!

Thank you again for making this an unforgettable trip! You have set the bar very, very high!

The Residence in Mauritius is a wonderful resort - romantic setting, beautiful gardens and surroundings, colonial style spacious rooms and the loveliest most helpful people you'll ever meet!

My husband and I travelled here for our honeymoon - it was wonderful from start to finish - the attention to detail - from staff remembering your names, to special romantic complimentary boat trips, the wonderful, wonderful fresh food and picture perfect settings as well as a gift on arrival and bottle of bubbly and bowl of fresh fruit.

On arrival - a bell is chimed and we were greeted with a cool glass of ice tea and cold face towel. The manager then came to welcome us and introduced us to our butler for the duration of our stay. The butler kindly unpacks all of your luggage so you can get started straight away on enjoying your holiday!

The beach is paradise - lovely clear water, golden white powdery sand and lots of beds available - the beach staff are great - laying out towels on your bed, delivering cold drinks and fresh cut fruit throughout the day.

The food is fabulous, tasty, fresh and flavoursome...

Worth speaking to concirege if you want to take some trips around Mauritius say to the Botanical Gardens or the Capital - they will gladly arrange a car for you which is cheaper than booking through your agent.

The town with a few small souvenir stores and convenience stores is a short walk away along the beach and worth a visit if you want to pick up a few keep sakes and snacks...

You will feel completely spoiled at The Residece - if you love luxury, are a bit of a foodie, want a romantic setting that is paradise perfect with the most humble and lovely staff - this is without question the place for you. You will not be disappointed!

Stayed here for a week at end of honeymoon after safari in Africa. May be that have had such a great time in Africa that we had been spoiled, but this part of the holiday didn't really live up to expectations. Went in September 2010, weather was a little iffy, rained a couple of the days. The hotel is very nice, but limited sunbeds by the pools, loads on the beach though. As most places it suffered from the problem of people reserving loungers at about 7am, going back to bed, then having breakfast til about 11am before finally using said loungers. The staff were really nice, especially in the Plantation restaurant (food much nicer here than main restaurant with more choice). DIdn't really leave the hotel though as there wasn't really anything nearby. Beach was ok, but not the beautiful blue lagoon type water and white sand that I was expecting. Drinks and any food not included was also very expensive. Overall, lovely hotel, excellent staff but felt a bit disappointed and also overpriced.

From the first moment we arrived we had a fabulous time at the hotel. Reading other reviews, your glass is really half empty if you don't love the place.
The welcome is great and probably the best thing overall is the outstanding staff service and friendliness. Within hours they were addressing us by name and this continued for the whole time we were there.
We don't usually like going back to the same place twice, as we want to explore other areas of the world but we will definitely be returning to The Residence (as soon as possible!).

The best bits are:-
Location - It is simply stunning and fits every view we had of a tropical beach. The turquoise water is clear and very easy to swim in. The sun loungers are comfortable and the quality of service you get at the beach is great. The free water and ice just keeps coming. The water sports are well run and again the staff can not do enough to help.

The rooms are spacious and bathrooms huge, the standard of housekeeping is immaculate and do take advantage of your butler. It does seems strange to have someone unpack and pack all your things when you arrive and leave and to run rose petal baths for you, but it is well worth it.

The pool and main public areas are stylish and comfortable. They have a great feeling of space and you are never far from a breathtakingly stunning view.

The food quality is superb and there was just about enough variety to keep us interested the whole two weeks we were there. We liked both the main restaurant and the more traditional local flavours offered by the Plantation. The special 'buffet' evenings (three times per week) were delicious and themed around Asian, Mediterranean and seafood.

Some tips and thoughts:

We will not be the last to say the drinks prices are eye watering but we knew that before we went from reading the reviews. This does mean the bar after dinner lacked atmosphere sometimes and there were rarely more than 20 people listening to the very high quality music played by good musicians. It is shame and one day the management will realise they are actually reducing their revenue by doing this. We and others would have spent more if the prices were more affordable. Instead we took our own from the airport and bought more locally. The staff bought ice for drinks to our room every night and we had a pre dinner drink while we were getting ready instead of the being in the bar, which we would have preferred.

We would strongly suggest organising trips and taxis outside the hotel. They are so much cheaper. We had a fabulous trip on a speed boat with another family which was £150 cheaper beacuse we organised it ourselves with a local chap called Ballack. Do visit the local market at Flacq, but again get a taxi from outside of the hotel as it is virtually half price.
The vendors who work the beach will arange things for you and will always know someone. Just haggle and you will be surprised how much you can save. I must point out these street vendors are not a hassle; all the ones we met were polite and friendly you only had to say 'no' once.

I don't want to leave anyone reading this with a negative thought, as the above are really minor points and should not detract from the fact this this place is truly wonderful.

Go as soon as you can, and we will hope to see you there. We are going back.
