This place is great! It is a short boat trip from the airport yet it is not in a flight-path so you don't hear the planes. It is 5-star shabby-chic so you don't dress for dinner or need to take lots of clothes with you. We sneaked in just before the monsoon hit - and the weather was fantastic (it only rained once during the night).
The food is fantastic and the bar is quiet and comfortable.
There's plenty to do if you don't like laying on the beach like us: Fantastc snorkeling from the main jetty around most of the island plus free shuttle to the neighbouring Angsana island where there is even more! There is free sailing on catamarans, diving etc. etc. and Male is close in case you want to see it.
We stayed in a sea-view villa which is simply recessed from the beach villas and you end up with a private courtyard which is quite nice. We had the deluxe which included a jacuzzi that we only used once. From the villa you walk out onto the beach where there are two loungers reserved for you with towels and the waves are a few meters away. The beach villas have decks jutting out over the beach - frankly I prefer the courtyard and the beach.
The staff are friendly and attentive and the reception is very helpful. I have no idea what the manager looks like and that's the way it should be - they do not make a big show about it.
Next time we'll go half board as the menu from the bar is good and some days you don't need the whole nine yards; We'll go with a standard sea-view villa bacause we did not really use the jacuzzi anyhow.
Special moments: The feeding of the rays on the beach at 5pm; The turtle breeding programme; Our waiter arranging the best Pizza ever when the menu did not suit us one night; They let you stay at the resort instead of dunping you at the airport to wait for your flight - awesome.
We used to go to to Kanuhura but on the second trip the resort had been sold and became everything we hated and all that was special had changed.
Now we found Vabbinfaru through the great reviews it got here and it deserves its high rating! We will definitely go back next year to our new fantasy island!
