“Heaven on earth !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

I have just experienced a wonderful week in Dusit Thani, Maldives, where it was a slice of paradise. I was in a beach villa, which was extremely comfortable and spacious, the butler service bringing that extra touch. The food in the restaurant was worthy of it's 5 star rating, I found it difficult to choose at times, the breakfasts were out of this world.
The marine life in the house reef blew me away, I saw Turtles daily and Manta's regularly visited in the early mornings where they were easily visable. I was new to snorkelling and was able to see so much I felt I had no need to try scuba diving. The main feeling was that of being made so welcome, the staff always had a smile and nothing was any bother for them, the atmosphere on the island was relaxed and chilled. Dusit offers relaxation and tranquility, with the ocean offering it's delights should you wish to try it, and I believe you can't go to this beautiful island and not try it! The cycles were fun to travel around on, albeit a llittle rusty, but new ones are ordered I'm told. This fantastic new resort is worthy of a visit and I defy anyone not to fall in love with it.

Sawasdee Krub Khun Elaine,

Thank you for your comments and review of your time with us at Dusit Thani Maldives, we are delighted that you enjoyed our hospitality and offerings. Our colleagues all take great pride in offering the best in Thai hospitality with a Maldivian warmth and pleased this exceeded your expectations.

Pleased that your first experience of snorkeling went so well. Our reef does offer ease to those trying snorkeling for the first time with sessions organized through our dive centre to ensure you are confident when entering the water and highlighting the importance of snorkeling with care to both keep you safe and protect the corals for years to come. I encourage you to try scuba diving on your next visit, it is an experienced that is unparallel and you gain a different perspective of marine life within our reef.

Thank you again for your review.

Simply said, BEST trip ever!

Just to give you a background, my husband and I are not beach people. But the Dusit Thani Maldives were able to make this into one of our best, most memorable trips ever.

We stayed in a Lagoon Villa which is located very close to the dive center. From our villa, we could pretty much climb down the stairs and into the water. There is no real need to scuba dive as the marine life is very close to the surface and very friendly. Snorkeling around the island, we saw 2 Eagle Rays and a turtle plus countless fish. We also signed-up for the "Lucky Manta Trip" and swam with 4-5 Manta Rays.

Tips for those looking to visit the Maldives, there is only 1 hotel per island and islands vary, some have beaches, some have reefs and some are scuba diving spots. Pick an island that fits your needs. For example, Dusit Thani Maldives is great for snorkeling and marine life, but only has a small sandy beach.

Sawasdee Krub Khun Travel_Sh0es,

We are delighted that we were able to exceed both you and your husband’s expectations and provide you with such a memorable trip.

The Water Villas in which you stayed are ideal for none beach lovers being situated just off the cost in the sea with their own infinity pool and great views over our house reef. Like you mention our reef is very easy to access and witness the hive of marine life activity. We are very fortunate to have one of the best preserved reefs in the region and can be enjoyed through both snorkeling and diving. The advantage of diving is that we have a number of caves under the island that pay host to an array of life which cannot be viewed from the surface.

Thank you again for your comments and we hope to welcome you back to the Maldives on your next visit.

Was in a water villa: spacious, new, very nice set up, comfortable beds .... The most amazing thing is the staff: very cheerful, helpful and friendly .
The breakfast buffet is very good: a large choice of cheese, jams, eggs, pastries, fruits .... All whatever you can wish for a breakfast!
The food in restaurants is not a 5 stars ,,,, at benjarong the shrimps in the salad were not that tasty, the peas in the green curry were undercooked and very bitter .... As at the sea grill, the salad was not seasoned well, the tuna was over cooked, the asparagus was bitter and the Aubergine paste was not eatable! It was ok .... But not up to the level to the hotel's other services .....

Room Tip: If you are seeking privacy, Don't choose the north east water villas as 1- constant landing and...

Sawasdee Krub Khun Nicky,

Thank you for taking the time to submit your review of your stay with us. We are pleased you enjoyed your Water Villa, they are one of the favourite accommodations after our Ocean Villas.

I am disappointed that you found our restaurants did not meet the same expectations. With regards to the Thai Green Curry, the green pea looking vegetables used are actually Thai Egg Plant and are a little crunchy with a sour taste to them. We will ensure that our colleagues better explain this during service. Sour forms one of the five key flavours within all Thai dishes which make the flavours unique to other cuisines. Your comments on our breakfast offering is appreciated, a lot of our jams that you sampled are actually made on site and other a large selection of different flavours.

Thank you again for your comments.

Just returned from 10 wonderful nights on the island and we can't recommend it enough. The staff, from the restaurants through to the butlers, and the senior management are all extremely welcoming and helpful. We stayed in one of the ocean villas and the room was spacious and modern with a large terrace and very good size infinity pool. The facilities on the island were fantastic and we were particularly impressed with both the Sea Grill and Benjarong (Thai) restaurants where both the food and service were excellent. The spa was one of the best we've experienced both in terms of quality of the facility and the treatments. The coral reefs around the island were exceptional and the number and diversity of the fish were really quite outstanding. We also saw turtles, dolphins and manta rays in the reef surrounding the island. We also learned that the resort is very environmentally friendly in many areas, such as it's water bottling and waste management. Weather was fantastic for the full 10 days, and sun sets were duly enjoyed from the lounger beds at both the Sand and Sala bars. Kind of surprised to read some of the negative comments below, as for a new 5 star resort it really does deliver a wonderful experience!

My husband and I just returned from a week at this awesome resort. Stayed in beach front pool villa and I have to say - "it was magnificent!". We did read a number of previous reviews and were a little concerned however the property exceeded our expectations. One comment was lack of fish in the water (?) I am not sure where they swam but we snorkeled continuously around the Island just about every day and have never seen so many fish! Over the fish!!! We even swam we Manta's and Turtles - so cool !! Quick wrap - restaurants brilliant (and the Thai restaurant better than Thailand) went to gym, great but was informed it is being relocated to a beautiful ocean view local (good idea) accom too die for and next we're back (and we WILL be) we will go for the ocean view villa - can't wait.

Room Tip: entry level room is beach front pool at back - still good but if your budget allows go beachfront wi...

Sawasdee Krub Khun Debra,

It was an absolute delight having you stay with us and we are pleased you both enjoyed it. Our house reef certainly is a hive of activity with marine life and there are countless species around the resort to see. We are fortunate to be within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve meaning we are close to a number of locations famous for Manta Rays between July and November and happy that you were able to witness them during your stay.

We are certainly looking at improvements to the gym, while it is kitted with state of the art equipment we continually are looking at ways to heighten your experience whilst with us.

Thank you again for your comments and we look forward to welcoming you both on your return to the island.

After doing much research (including on this site), we decided on Dhusit Thani Maldives. Although the overall experience was good, but the service standards were lacking and should be improved on.

Accommodation:

We stayed in one of the lagoon villas. The room was really nice, with a pillow menu (although 2 out of the 5-6 options were not available) and molten brown toiletries. A small bottle of body oil and sleep balm was also left on our bedside table on the first night - I thought that this was a really nice touch. We also loved the fact that there was a staircase that goes right into the lagoon, where we spent a whole morning snorkelling.

Water activities:

We went snorkelling on our own on the house reef, and saw many fishes. However, the corals were mostly dead probably due the construction. We also did not manage to see any sea turtles or manta on the house reef. We went on two of the snorkelling tours - the hanifaru bay tour and the night snorkelling tour. We saw about 10 manta at hanifaru and it was really an amazing experience swimming so close to the magnificent creatures. However, it was a little crowded especially when a manta appears as everyone wants to get a close look at the manta and take photos. We would have appreciated less people on the tour, but it was acceptable. The night snorkelling was also an experience. There wasn't much to see as it was quite dark even with the torchlights, but it was still an interesting experience and worth a try.

Food:

After all the great reviews about the food at Benjarong, we couldn't wait to try it and booked dinner for the first night. The food was so-so only, and we left disappointed. We were also not offered an option to order from the main menu, with only the set menu offered. It was my birthday on the first night, and the resort had offered a birthday cake but none came. (The room, however, was nicely made up with rose petals on the bed)

We also tried one of the buffet dinners at the Market, and it was adequate but not anything to write home about. Our favourite restaurant was the Sea Grill - we were allowed to order one starter, main course, and dessert off the main menu (we were on half board), and I remember the tenderloin to be perfectly cooked and the chocolate cake to be dense and intensely chocolately. This is the only restaurant we patronised more than once.

Service:

This is the area we felt Dhusit Thani fell short in, and is not acceptable in a resort of its price point. After we checked in, we were left waiting at the reception for about half an hour because our butler was not available. Also, our baggage was labelled with the wrong room number at the Maldives Air Taxi check in, and we had to wait awhile (maybe an hour) before the butler found our baggage and delivered it to us. Over the next day or so, we tried to call our butler from our room phone (there is a dedicated button on our room phone) but was always met with an engaged tone. It was not until bumping into our butler by chance on the island and raising this issue with him that he came to our room and realised that our room phone was wrongly programmed.

However, the most infuriating part of our trip was the day before we were supposed to leave. On check in, we were told that occupancy for the resort would be dipping on the last day of our stay, and therefore we could keep our villa up until our seaplane transfer, which we were promised would be the last transfer of the day because our flight out of Male was at 1135pm. However, the day before we left, we were given our seaplane transfer details in the evening, and we were surprised to see that our flight was at 3pm. Also, we were told to have our luggage outside our room at 2pm. We went to reception and found out that the last flight out was at 530pm but that was full.

It was only after many phone calls, much cajoling and heated discussions with our butler over the course of a few hours that a compromise was found. We were given seats on the last seaplane transfer, but our luggage had to go on the earlier flight, and we had to move to a beach villa after 1pm.

The trip was good overall because of the nice room and snorkelling.

Sawasdee Krub Khun Victsc,

Thank you for your comments in regards to your stay with us. These form a valuable tool for us as hoteliers to ensure that we are continually meeting with guest expectations. I am pleased that you enjoyed your experience during your stay with us at Dusit Thani Maldives, we are very fortunate to have a spectacular house reef and have a dedicated team headed up by our Marine Biologist who are constantly looking at ways to both protect our environment and educate our guests to the importance in doing so.

Excursions to visit the Manta Ray feeding areas are extremely popular due to our close proximity, however we do minimise the number of people we take out to ensure that each of our guests are able to have a unique experience whilst in the water. We are sorry you felt too crowded, we are continually addressing these areas and will again review numbers on these trips.

In regards to the communication errors you face, we apologise for the inconvenience this caused. I have alerted the team concerned and we are looking to further enhance our guest service and butler training to ensure that guests receive a consistent high level of service and attentiveness as expected from our resort.

We are pleased you enjoyed our Sea Grill restaurant, both the food and setting are ideal for an island location. I am too disappointed that your expectations of Benjarong were met. The restaurant is the most popular on the island and as you mention receives a number of recommendations from other guests. I have addressed this with the team.

Thank you again for your comments in regards to your stay with us.

have just returned from a few days at the Dusit Thani, and had the most amazing time. I am lucky enough to have experienced many luxury hotels both in the Maldives and around the world, and fell in love with this place. Recently opened, in February 2012, the Dusit Thani, situated in the Baa Atoll, is a perfect blend of Thai and Maldivian hospitality. It's a wonderful place to go and escape the world and leave all your cares behind. The resort is what I call "relaxed luxury" and gives you the feeling of having your own bit of paradise. The resort is working hard at being eco-friendly, and are happy to show you "behind the scenes" such as the de-salination plant, bottling room, laundry, workshops, and staff quarters. Great care has been taken to ensure that buildings fit into the natural landscape of the island, and it's wonderful to walk or ride your bike along the sand paths (or take a golf buggy) through the palm and banyan trees. The individual villas are beautifully decorated, with extremely comfortable beds, and all mod-cons (including free wi-fi for those that just can't leave the outside world behind!) I stayed in a beach villa which had a super partially-outdoor bathroom, and a view from the bed through the foliage to the beach and sea - there's nothing better to start the day than to get up, open your decking doors, and walk onto "your" bit of beach. The staff are out of this world and really make the place - helpful and friendly and will do anything for you. The bars and restaurants are top quality, with excellent food and service. The signature Thai restaurant, Benjarong, offers delicious, authentic Thai cuisine in a beautiful setting overlooking the sea and the perfect spot for watching the sun set. And then there's the marine life! Situated on its own amazing house reef, which can be accessed off the beach, and with other reefs nearby I have never seen such wonderful corals, diversity and quantity of fish, turtles etc - and I achieved one of my bucket list - swimming with manta rays! The resort has it's own Marine Biologist, Lauren Arthur, who is passionate about her work - "don't stand on the reef"! And then there's the spa - a beautiful area situated on stilts among the trees - where you're looked after by Thai therapists, given a drink on arrival, a choice of treatments and essential oils. My 1 hour Swedish massage with "Glee" oil by a lovely Thai girl was just perfect - very relaxing and just the right amount of pressure.
My final words are - don't forget the sunscreen (as the sun is very strong even through any cloud cover, and intensified when you're in the water), take an old T-shirt/pair of shorts to go snorkelling in so the sun doesn't get to your exposed bits, and finally apply insect repellant in the evenings as the foliage does conceal a few bitey friends! I speak as one who learnt the hard way!
I didn't want to leave, and I'm saving to go back.
