The moment we stepped out of our car, we were greeted warmly by the staff and ushered to the lobby served with cold tower and welcome drink.

The staff was very detail in explaining and informing us of the necessary things like the breakfast, spa etc. Soon after that we we lead to our room. Ours was the Serambi suite. I fell in love with the architecture and the surroundings. I never knew that just across the border, our neighbour has a magnificent resort with an affordable price.

As we enter our suite i was more surprised as our suite and the bathroom was large and spacious. Seriously, I've never expected it to be this spacious! They have provided a generous amount of toiletries (see picture). I was one satisfied guest! Heheheee

Alright, this i'm not sure if they still have it. As i can remember we reached the resort on a saturday afternoon past lunch time ang going to be dinner soon. So we were kind of hungry and was trying to just have some snacks as its going to be dinner soon.

Lucky us we arrive on a saturday. They have this cultural thing that they introduce from 5pm to 6pm every saturday where their staff will gather to play the state cultural stuff like congkak, kompang, sepaktakraw and monkey climbing. Guest are invited to join in. On top of that, there are several huts preparing Terengganu famous delicacies like keropok lekor, cucur pisang, lemang and serunding daging (this one very tasty!) apam balik and otak-otak (so sedap/delicious too!) for us to endulge in like having a picnic. The best part is, the delicacies are on the house!

It was a wonderful experienced. I can't wait to go there again Jan 2009.
In the mean time, i'll let the pictures do the talking.

We stayed at Tanjong Jara for two nights on a ‘meals included’ promotion in the middle of September to sample the resort. After a six-hour drive, we received a very warm and personal welcome and were taken to our Bumbung room by a member of the Front Desk staff, who explained the layout of the resort and our dining plan.
By modern standards the room was large (55sqm) with king-size bed and separate day bed. The room was nicely designed and quiet with a nice view of the beach and sea through the tree canopy. The bathroom was large with long tub and large walk-in shower and was nicely equipped. The resort is very spread out, which gives it a spacious feel but our room was quite a long walk from the reception area and main restaurant. The grounds are well kept and there is plenty of shade from the mature trees.
When we stayed, the resort it was just at the end of its’ main season and had only a 33% occupancy, which made it feel very exclusive and individual. When occupancy is this low, breakfast in the Di Atas Sungei Restaurant is served a la carte. Trays of fruit and breads and pastries are brought to your table for you to make your selection and juices are freshly squeezed to order. There is then a menu of Western and Asian hot dishes to choose from. As a result, the food was fresh and tasty and requests for variations from the hot menu were no problem. Unlike the standard hotel buffet these days, the service was very personal and the result was a leisurely and delicious breakfast.
On our meal plan, lunch was taken at the Nelayan Restaurant, where you can dine indoors or on the terrace immediately adjacent to the beach. We sampled fish fritters and chips, Greek salad and the Tapas selection as a departure from our normal Asian diet. All were delicious but the Tapas selection was disappointingly small for the price – at RM42 the most expensive item on the menu and probably the smallest.
Dinner for us was at the Di Atas Sungei Restaurant, which, as other reviewers have commented, does not have a menu. Guide prices for the main courses are displayed at the entrance but without a menu the starter and dessert prices are unknown and this is where it could get costly. On the first evening we had the steamed buns with chilli sauce, which are brought to you as an appetiser (but charged), then a shared starter of spring rolls (which were not spectacular, but nice enough – on the second night the prawns in garlic batter were far superior), followed by Sea Bream and Red Snapper with vegetables and desserts of chocolate lava cake and fruit salad with sorbet. We had one fruit punch and a Mai Tai plus a two-litre bottle of water. The total cost, inclusive of tax and service was RM304. The second night was RM254. On our tariff, all except the Mai tai and fruit punch were included so we weren’t concerned but on a no-meals basis, the evening meal costs could be fairly expensive over a longer stay. On our second night we declined the steamed buns because they deadened our appetite. Again though, the service was delightful, the ambience very pleasant and the food tasty. Chef Ann greets you as you enter and asks what you like. She then suggests a dish based on your preferences and what she sourced at the market that morning. This is great if you know what you like or are open to recommendations based on local ingredients but less so if you are dithery, unadventurous or new to the east coast style of preparation. Seafood is the speciality for dinner at the Nelayan but I can’t comment on prices as it wasn’t an option on our dining plan. There is also the possibility of dinner on the beach or the steamboat option but the latter’s not a favourite of ours.
As people have said before, the beach is wide, sandy and clean. The sea is warm and clear. At high tide the beach slopes quite steeply so you get out of your depth quite suddenly but at low tide the water is shallow for some distance and the waves are more gentle so it is easier to swim. We used the adult pool, which has a section at 3 metres depth – unusual in a hotel pool – but didn’t try the larger pool near the Spa. We didn’t sample the Spa facilities on this stay.
There is a small range of excursions that you can make and crafts that you can try but I think that the real point of this resort is to come and chill out within its’ confines. Don’t plan to wander out to local bars or sights as there are none. The very factors that make this resort idyllic would be tedious for some – it is peaceful because it is in the middle of nowhere, the beach is excellent because there is no nearby development. Come here for a few days to relax in a very special haven.
Our tips: (1) If you need to keep to a lid on meal costs, book a deal with meals included as it saves worrying about mounting bills. Malaysian and Singapore residents can try YTL Travel Services for special deals. If not, expect five-star-resort-in-the middle-of–nowhere–prices. (2) If you are prone to being eaten by the local mosquitoes, bring insect repellent and use it day and night – it’s the downside of the lush vegetation. (3) Check the climate data as this coast has a very distinct monsoon season when you could be disappointed by a lot of rain.
Would we come back? At the drop of a hat. We’re thinking maybe February…

Well worth the travel to get there, great location, great hotel, great facilities, great food and a great head chef, Anne! We went with all the family (23 of us) including children from teenagers to babies. They were so accommodating and to save us having to choose from the menu each night they prepared us a banquet (if we wanted it). The quantity and quality of everything was fantastic. We would definately go back again - the Malaysian people are so warm and friendly and nothing is too much bother. The villa's are traditional teak/wooden, spacious, clean, cool and with all mod cons. Pools are fabulous and location on the beach ideal. Spa was a haven particularly for those who had too much sun. Could not stay out of it! A bit of a trek to get there but with a few nights in KL it is well worth it.

My partner and I have just come back from a two weeks holiday at Tanjong Jara and we have spent the most amazing holidays ever! We were looking for quiet holidays, completely cut off from the stressful and noisy world we live in and we got exactly what we wanted. Don't expect nightlife because there is none, this is a holiday for people who want to resource themselves and re-energize. The resort is very clean and well maintained. The bedrooms are huge and comfortable, all mods & cons worked perfectly.

The staff is very friendly and always catering to your every need. Richard the diving instructor is passionate about what he does and is very professional. Aziz and Yo who take you to activities on the land are very knowledgeable and professional as well.

The food is of very good quality, especially impressed with Vivian, the chef from the Nelayan, who is outstanding. His food is out of this world and he can make you a "Vivan's special menu" if your request it. Evenings at Tanjong Jara are magical, with torches and garden lamps scattered all around the resort and the band playing at the Nelayan. I would recommend the diner on the beach which is extremely romantic.

The spa village is great and so relaxing. They give you a sarong and offer you tea every time you go for a treatment.

The service by the pool is great offering you complimentary cold iced water throughout the day and sliced fresh fruits.

You have two nice pools a small one very quiet and a bigger one where children are allowed, both are great.

The breakfast is fantastic, everything is made fresh at the buffets, juices, omelettes, noodles etc....

All in all an amazing experience and we would definitely go back and recommend this resort. Thank you to all the team at Tanjong Jara.

I just read the reviews from a guest of London that rated this hotel very bad and I am really astonished.
My husband and myself were there for 5 nights from Aug 17 and I loved this place.
I have been to many high level resort, last one was the awarded Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda, but I think Tanjong Jara is by far the best.
You have great service and accommodation but is quite cheap if compared to Caraibbean.

The hotel, the service, the rooms, the Spa are great.
The restaurants are very nice.
The pool is beautiful.

The only weak point is the sea, nothing special. I think this is the perfect place to stay after some trips to Malaysia island, if you want just to relax in a high level resort. And againg do not expect nightlife outsidethe resort, as this is in a very secluded area. But I really loved. I do not wish to find in Malaysia the same things I can find in Milano...

Regarding the english spoken by the people, I think that if you are in Malaysia you can not expect that people speak english as they were mother tongue. I'm Italian and really had no problem in communication.

The Tanjong Jara is absolute paradise and provided one of the most restful holiday stays we have ever had. My husband had been there 25 years ago and always wanted to go back and
we were not disapointed. Arriving at Kuala Trenganu, the resort organised a chauffer driven car to pick us up from Shahbanger jetty and we were whisked down the coast an hour from Kuala Trenganu in a big Volvo sedan with drinks, reading material etc.
This cost 175 M R's - quite reasonable (and incidentally it was only an hour to be chauffered back up to the Trenganu airport as well). On arrival we were greeted by charming staff, given a complementary cold drink while procedures were explained. A gong is sounded when each new guest arrives and the entrance lobby is beautiful with Malay architecture, flowers and water features. Our room was one of the less expensive ones, being upstairs, it was very pleasant being up in the trees and like most rooms we had a view of the sea from our window. The rooms have are large, have been newly decorated with swathes of muslin, a roomy day bed, Malay style furnishing and fittings, gorgeous bed, huge bathroom with tub, candles and bath oils etc. One of those places where you can't decide if you just want to stay in your room all the time! The staff could not do enough for guests and were attentive, friendly and helpful. While we were there, there were 2 weddings held out of doors in the attractive landscaped gardens. Every night the complex is lit with hundreds of lanterns and flares that amid the gardens and Malay architecture really adds to the magic of the place. The
food was exceptionally good and offered a wide choice though we made a point of eating Malay dishes. Anne, who rules the hotel's restaurants , is a real character and a local and offers a "talking" menu, each night she goes around the tables and
tells people what she has got and discusses how they would like it cooked, so there is individual attention for food. Anne also takes guests to visit the local markets in Dungen where she buys local produce and she also gives cooking classes.
The beach is lovely , golden sand and at night you can have dinner prepared and served in style right on the beach. There seemed a lot of honeymooners and I couldn't think of a better place for a honeymoon . We can't wait to go back and it was the perfect place for total relaxation and pampering.
