“"Nearly" there”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

I called this "nearly" there because it is the word that perfectly sums up our experience. It was "nearly" excellent and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and would be happy to return again.

I gave detailed feedback to the resort via their feedback request form in the spirit that it will be helpful and give guidance as to some areas to improve so as to make it "properly" excellent.
For guests wishing to stay at TJ, there are many lovely aspects to this resort that make it worth visiting. It is on a beautiful stretch of beach ("nearly" clean) which had a bit of debris and various points of low tide and I would recommend the hotel staff do a little bit of a clean up when they see the litter (including sadly, one used nappy) washed up.

The gorgeous Anjung Suite (to which we were very kindly upgraded) was stunning and "nearly" perfect minus the aircon which was "nearly" functional (a button had broken meaning you couldn't change the settings or fan speed without a handy pair of tweezers) and the lights which were "nearly" all working (lightbulbs had blown). But I feel it's churlish to complain too much here because it was a very generous upgrade and we were totally delighted. I would probably consider it worth the money if these details were fixed.

Service was "nearly" professional, extremely friendly and welcoming staff in the restaurant areas but to some extent lacking managerial oversight, e.g. someone who was aware of the status of orders, who'd not been given a menu yet, who was on dessert, how long the meal would take to arrive, etc. From our personal experience, as a result of some chaos and confusion between order and delivery of food we waited a long time for our lunch (over an hour). When we raised it as a concern, we were then asked a touch rudely, "Oh you weren't served first?" This was not even "nearly" the point!

The food as part of the package deal we had purchased was "nearly" value for money, but we decided it was a bit too canteen-style for an upmarket resort and for our liking. We paid the additional 100MYR per person to eat at the finer dining restaurant and this was much better. The lamb dishes were some of the best we'd had in Malaysia and it is worth going at least once to this restaurant if you like the look of the menu.

The grounds of the resort are particularly lovely, beautiful greenery and water features and a sensible and extensive layout. They were "nearly" very well kept but we noticed cigarette ends (there's no manners from some of the other guests), crisp packets and fallen roof tiles which remained uncollected and not swept away even over two or three days.

So, to the lovely staff at Tanjong Jara, who made our family feel extremely welcome, you are so "nearly" there with making this a wonderful, luxurious experience. Don't wait for Management Systems and Processes to fix the niggles, show pride in your surroundings, and even if 'the boss' hasn't asked you to do something and you think it needs fixing - please take the initiative. Perhaps TJ Management if you're reading this, you might help make this possible!!

This is a very pleasant resort for a stay of about a week. We stayed longer and became a bit cabin-fevered since it's several miles from anywhere which we did not realise - 75 minutes from airport and miles from the city of Kuala Terengganu which we had not realised.

Good points: very high quality welcome, cleanliness, lovely jungle location with beautiful and large rooms, excellent breakfast and good food, if a little nouvelle cuisine in quantity. Some good excursions - esp. island snorkelling. Hotel beach and pools very good but just a few metres up the beach very litter-strewn! Iced water brought to you very frequently by pool or beach. Some nice personal touches: real effort to get to know you from many staff, leaving gifts, Malay wedding couple ceremony etc. We did not use the spa - they are never cheap - but had good reports from those who did.

Less good: no opportunity for snacks and meals rather expensive, internet OK in public places but should be free in rooms for this 5 star rating. Excursions were over-priced eg £7 each for 4km to evening market in a minibus of eight people.

We were glad we went but would research such a trip a bit more since it came out much more expensive as we had assumed cheap "native" eating out, rather than £50 - 70 per night without the extremely expensive alcohol (not their fault since this is a very Islamic area of the country).

Room Tip: Go for the sea facing 1st floor rooms in the 700 / 800 area

We stayed here for 4 nights as part of our honeymoon, in a Serrambi suite, and absolutely loved it. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very special (thanks to Nicole) and our room was clean, luxurious and beautifully designed with lots of simple touches. Our full board package included a 2 course lunch and 3 course dinner every day, and the restaurants were varied enough that we felt we ate very well (we definitely almost ate too much). The only negative is that the Malay restaurant is built over now stagnant water - the smell and mozzies are quite bad- but we just ate indoors. Chef Anne's culinary creations meant it was worth it though! We had private torchlit dinner on the beach one night and it was such a special experience. The spa treatments were fantastic especially the massage and scrub. It was sad to leave (especially the staff that we befriended during our stay) but we will definitely go back! Thanks for a brilliant stay!

Thank you for your recent stay with us and for this review. I am delighted to note that you had a brilliant holiday with us. We will be looking forward to your return to the Unmistakably Malay Tanjong Jara Resort.

We have experienced a dry spell of late. We will be seeking the cooperation of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to assist us with this. In the meantime, we have been pumping water into the river to regulate it.

Again, thank you and see you again soon.

The hotel lobby was inviting, but the resort sure needs refurbishment to keep up with its 5 star standard. Breakfast was quite disappointing for an award-winning resort. Same food served daily there, juz rearrange the location of the food items! Wifi is limited to restaurants and the lobby, disappointing! Wish they had it at pool area! The bubble spa treat at the pool is not auto, so u gotta constantly get up to press the button- irritating n half of the holes are stuck!! :( The Di Atas Sungei restaurant, river It did not flow as stated on the website, and stunk :( Activities at the resort are a lot but everything has a price and it is not cheap either!! Was bitten by mozzie in room even though they had lit up the mozzie coil.
For Dinner u can take a 10min walk to CB Wee Restaurant along the main road- food not that great but the only walking distant restaurant outside of hotel. or head to Dungun town for a meal @ Ban Yeow Seafood Restaurant.

**Saving grace is that the beach is quite clean and quiet! Enjoyed the beach while we were there!:)

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Unmistakably Malay Tanjong Jara Resort!

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and for the review.

Popular breakfast items are featured daily, which makes up for a large portion of the breakfast spread. We do have a quite number of items too that are changed daily which you may not have noticed. Nevertheless, we will strive to improve on this.

Yes 4G Wi-fi is available throughout the resort via a transceiver for a nominal fee.

Thank you for highlighting the jacuzzi pool. We will have the pool checked for clogs and the timer reset to a longer duration.

We have experienced a dry spell of late. We will be seeking the cooperation of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to assist us with this. In the meantime, we have ben pumping water into the river to regulate it.

The scenery is extremely breath taking. The beach is very clean and quiet.

The rooms are large with a very spacious bathroom. However, a few improvement defiantly needed as some features of the room were pretty run down. The main door was very difficult to lock and the washroom was little dirty.

There are some sitting area on the beach but some of it the sheets are extremely dirty.

The staff are very friendly and can see that they were trying their best to performed upon guests' expectation. However, is very obvious that the resort is lacking numbers of staff. The services was excellent but is very slow. I overheard a few complain form the tables next to us.

Overall, it was a very good place for relaxation, love the activities provided by the resorts. I would defiantly be back but maybe not on a peak season again.

Charm of serene Malaysian beach life captured in a bottle. That’s the experience provide by Tanjong Jara Resort. Overall a well rested stay pampered by exceptional services. Comfortable rooms, infusion of local cuisines and attentive staffs. The only drawbacks are mosquitoes, remote locations. Visiting the night market (Thursday night only) sharing meal with the locals was the main highlight of my trip.

Tanjong Jara Resort is certainly beautiful, however there were a few areas which could do with improvement. We stayed in the one of the Anjung Rooms (beach villa) we were lucky enough to have the one that was actually right on the beach, the others had a large strip of grass in front with pathways for people to walk along to go to the pool or restaurant or Spa, so not exactly 'private' as stated on their website. Our beautiful villa had a lovely outside bath, which was sadly overlooked by next door's balcony. This balcony could also look right into us sitting on the toilet (which had a clear glass door on it, we had to put a towel up so people could not see in). Again not very private. The food was the best food we had ever tasted in our lives, we simply could not fault it. The Di Atas Sungei restaurant situated over the river was stunning, however the river was not. It did not flow as stated on the website, and stunk to high heaven, not very nice when you are eating the most delicious food in the world. It looked even less inviting as though something had died and rotted in there. There was obviously some problem, as towards the end of the week work was being done to try and get it flowing again. At the beginning of the week the breakfast in this restaurant was pretty average, we had to ask for tea and coffee, there was no menu on our table, towards the end of the week as soon as we walked in we were asked if we wanted tea or coffee and if we would like anything cooked for us, there was a menu on the table, and the selection of food was far better than at the start of the week. Nelayan again a beautiful restaurant with beautiful food. We were told by reception they only served Western food, which put us off going, when we travel we like to sample local food. Anyway we thought we would have a look anyway, and yes they do serve Western food, but also an array of delicious local food too. When on the beach the service was pretty non existent occasionally you would get a glass of water depending on what waiter was on that day, which was a shame. We have also been lucky enough to stay at another YTL resort, Pangkor Laut, where the service was second to none, and made Tanjong Jara's service look quite poor in comparison.

Room Tip: If you would like a beach villa that is actually 'on the beach' that you can walk to from yo...
