“Fantastic resort, top class food and unbeatable service”
Reviewed May 11, 2013 via mobile

Thoroughly loved every minute of our week long trip. We wanted somewhere to relax away from larger tourist resorts and this was the perfect choice. Food and service were absolutely amazing and we will be back to this first class resort.

A cosy little gem of a resort tucked away on Malaysia's East coast. It's not up there with the Amans and the Banyan Trees in terms of sophistication, but if you are looking for a quiet picturesque retreat then this fits the bill. The beach is great and what is particularly nice is the absence of vendors pestering you for massages, sarongs or water sports a la Bali and Phuket. You pretty much have this beach to yourself. It's clean too. Service is friendly and accommodating although at times it proceeds at its own somewhat leisurely pace. Still, nobody is really in a hurry so it does not really matter. Food quality is good enough without being exceptional. Rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable.

This resort is a secluded heaven half way up the eastern Malaysian penninsula. Two good, but different restaurants, a fine curving beach, attentive staff and stunning gardens.
There's not much to do in the surrounding area but the resort is somewhere you would want to not leave. Large rooms with verandahs look out over the Gulf of Thailand and there are monkeys in the trees.

Room Tip: The rooms on the northside are best as you are directly over the beach.

My 6th visit and I just love this place.

The pressure was on because I came this time with both my brother and one of my oldest friends from the UK.

Tanjong Jara just produces this incredibly laid back atmosphere taking you far away from the worries of day to day life. It really has everything you could want from a beach hotel.

The food is delicious, and I recommend getting food inlcuded in your package. Its good to see so many of the staff still here since my first visit: chef Anne, Hisham, and we were very impressed by a newer waitress - Ameera. In the evenings chef Anne will cook up for you a selection of chicken/beef/prawns/fish in a range of ways/sauces which are always outstanding, lunches are taken from an a la carte menu in the restaurant by the beach, and breakfast again, is delicious.

The hotel sits off a wide stretch of beach, and there are 2 swimming pools, one adults only, so kids can let off steam in the other one. We were all on a bit of a detox so used the gym and also the newly rennovated tennis court. The spa is also ideal for excellent massages. The layout of the hotel is good, really beautiful traditional architecture which compliments the natural surroundings. Also, its not a big hotel and it never feels full - there is a lot of space but everything is easy to get to.

The icing on the cake for me at tanjong jara is the day trips to tenggol island. Perhaps 40mins away by speed boat is the ultimate island paradise. Crystal clear waters, the ultimate white beach, coral reefs with turtles plus an array of other marine life. It is pure tropical heaven. My friends were litereally speechless. Also now a bbq lunch on the beach is provided which was very very tasty.

If you are considering Tanjong Jara I would strongly recommend it. Malaysia is obviously a long flight from Europe but I really think you'll find its worth it. No dis-respect to the Carribean or Thailand, but places anywhere as near as beuatiful as Tenggol island would just be over-run by tourists. Its a real secret. The diving/snorkelling is second to none, so combined this with all the luxury amentities at the hotel and the great atmosphere, and you're on to a real winner. Ideal both for a romantic break or a family holiday.

Room Tip: I think the best ones are called Serabam. Beutiful balconies looking out to sea.

Tangjong Jara offers you the feel of a luxurious eco resort where authentic Malaysian architecture gracefully embraces the truly amazing beauty of the tropical setting. The villas offer a high level of comfort and are beautifully conceived in a traditional exotic colonial style. The incredible kindness and warmth of it's employees ads a genuine human touch to it's already flawless service.

The resort's Asian style restaurant (one of two restaurants) offers exquisite and super fresh Malaysian cuisine. The chef will personally come to your table to ask for your preferences and propose a menu to meet these. Taking great interest in Asian cuisine ourselves we enjoyed the conversations with the chef, who also proposes excellent cooking classes and a private local market tour that we highly recommend.

The resort is perfect for absolute relaxation and the sumptuous and highly authentic Malaysian Spa treatments / rituals offer a genuine healing experience for soul and body. We highly recommend the special Spa package allowing you 50 minutes of treatments a day.

The resort also offers a number of activities such as mountain trekking and excellent scuba diving and snorkeling around the preserved spots of the the almost untouched Tenggol Island.

The location is quite "off the tourist track" (1hour south from Terengganu Air Port by car) so you won't find a lot of things to do that are not arranged by the resort. We recommend that you go into the nearby small harbor town of Dungun and experience the local food and market culture - you will be the only tourist.

Finally we recommend that you verify that you are visiting in the right season to avoid too much rain. You can expect even in the right season having a (minor) risk of rainy / cloudy weather. We had about 3 days of unexpected rain. The temperature was very nice though (around 30° C) and it didn't change the fact that we had an absolutely perfect stay.

Room Tip: The resort offers rooms with a view to the beach.

This is a truly wonderful hotel and has obviously heeded some of the criticisms made in recent years. Staff are helpful, food is good, beach clean and spa rather wonderful. Not all rooms have balconies at the moment (this, I understand, is being corrected with the upgradings) - so I suggest you recommend one - nor Wi-Fi except at a daily rate - rather surprising as I understand the hotel's owners are connected with telecommunications. But the rooms are spacious and well-designed. The beach is under-used but wonderful and there are two swimming pools one for kids only. Fantastic.

Room Tip: Request a balcony.

The hole setting is just perfect. We stayed in a room with sea view and a seperate terrace near the spa village and the beach restaurant. Breakfast and other meals are excellent but a kind of expensive....Beach strip is very clean and private and you can enjoy perfectly the atmosphere. Front desk is very helpful. Don't consider to take the private shuttle, you can go back and for with a budget taxi which is dramatically less expensive. From Terengganu don't pay more than 100 MR..but you have to insist at the reception...otherwise....!

Overall, we will come back!
