We had a great holiday had 2 of the basic rooms next to each other. Room very largevand good bathrooms. We did 9 nights.
Breakfast food good but ordering was a shambles.
Tennis free and pool and pool service great.
Lots of good activities and the turtle watching was amazing.
The facilities and staff effort was great but not as slick as you would expect for the money.
Had bill issues, spa issues and activity booking probs. All resolved well but all to simple to should have happened.

Went for a dive which was great swam with turtle. Dive master was good.

Despite it I would go back.

Room Tip: All seemed good we were in 911/912 halfway to pool and lobby with distant sea view.

The first sight is the majestic board declaring you are now approaching the premise of the most captivating sea kingdom in the idyllic state of Terengganu , Malaysia – The Tanjung Jara Resort. You will soon find out by immersing in this landscape meant getting more out of it. In addition, you will definitely feel the presence of ecology that marked you with a special relationship you will want to maintain during your stay and ever. Telltale sign of regal smiles illuminating from other guests obviously subscribe to the service of Peter, Patrick and Jazz will hint you how satisfied you will be the next few days. What more can you expect in this ancient place manifested by freedom with the nature force.

In this place is situated a simple traditional Malay building but lavishly decorated with modern spoils for holidaymaking comfort. It has latitude of panoramic jungle view undeterred over hundreds of years that magnificently imprint in you like a representation of original healthy living. It has a golden beach wrapped by the unwavering sea to make you forget any brick and mortar feeling. My discovery is that it is so well organised it makes you hypochondriacally feel space is abundant and beyond your needs. As we all know, when space is limited it will psychologically defeat your holiday purpose if you check in hotels that seem mortified with full of passages that led you to either the lounge or lobby -but not in this case.

I urge you to step in to this paradise full of angelic staffs to pamper you to feel it is possible heaven is a place in earth. Take a short odyssey to Tanjung Jara Resort and I guarantee you will not step out until check out time. Briefly, to describe it is a legacy of Asian castle dressed up in shimmering nature delight.

Tanjung Jara is well laid out. It has the best of everything but what stood out was the bicycle tour that we took. The guide was knowledgeable and accomodating. He knew our love for local treats and went out of his way to help us find them.

As a repeat visitor, this 2N3D offered me just enough to think I could stay here forever. Pristine waters, clean beaches and a pool that looks out to the ocean does it for me. The pool (big enough to accomodate guests even during peak seasons) is great.

Tanjung Jara rooms are an amazing treat, we stayed at the Bumbung room that overlooked the ocean. Malay-inspired gave it a homey feel whilst the bathroom (which came with bath salts) were a real treat! You feel like this is what you'd like your home to be like! I like the small touches (a welcome note and fruits) in the room.

Bits to improve: consistency of water temperature in shower, consistency of service/staff and Nelayan's menu (less of the exotic dishes, more of the comfort food).

Room Tip: Pick rooms closer to the main swimming pool and Nelayan. The walk can sometimes be a little far.

We stayed in Tanjong Jara for a week, 16-23 july, 2012. The resort is beautiful. Spa is great. The kids loved the swimming pool. We played tennis a lot of times. They don't charge for tennis, rackets, balls etc. That's good! We could not swim in the sea because of jellyfish.
We went out diving to Tenggol Island, that was really very good!! Best place for diving in peninsular Malaysia. Watch for whalesharks and manta's in August and September. Special thanks to Richard, the dive instructor. He is great and knows tenggols spots very well, therefor we saw turtles, sharks, stingrays, barracuda's. He makes pictures and video's of the dives which you can get afterwards, really nice, again thanks to Richard!
We found one thing disappointing in the resort and that was the food... it felt like asian food made for western people...breakfast was ok but dinner belowe the level we expected. Too bad.
Despite that we had a great time in a great resort!

Dear guest

I am so glad you enjoyed your time with us and most specially the pool, tennis and diving at Tenggol Island. Over the years Richard has come to know the diving spots rather well and is delighted at sharing his experience with our guests. I take note as well of your comments about Di Atas Sungei and would just like to add that our Malay kitchens attempts to cater to guests from wide ranging backgrounds and I am sorry if this was not to your liking on this particular occasion. If you have the opportunity to visit the part of Malaysia some other time, please contact me personally.

We stayed at Tanjong Jara resort for 10 nights. I can only say good things about our holiday. All the staff were friendly and welcoming, and made us feel like we were part of their family.
The room (serembi) was spacious, clean and comfortable. And with so many activities on offer we were never short of something to do.
I would highly recommend the snorkelling and diving excursions. A day spent snorkelling with Jan and the team to Tenggol island was the best snorkelling trip I have been on. On previous holidays we have just been told "off you go" but not here. They guide you around the stunning bay and we were lucky enough to see turtles, moray eels, Christmas tree worms and huge numbers of reef fish to name but a few. Things we usually only see when diving. Also a special mention for the wonderful chef who cooked us a cracking barbecue lunch.
Richard, the dive instructor, topped off a 2nd trip to Tenggol island by looking after us brilliantly. We hadn't dived in the sea for over a year so he made sure we were safe in the choppy waters and took us on a gentle first dive, followed by a more exciting drift dive.
No review would be complete without mentioning the wonderfully barmy chef Ann. We hit it off straight away and enjoyed her humour as well as her delicious cooking. "Miaow". (Hope Wolfgang's teeth are ok.)
An excursion with her to the local market is a must, followed by a cooking lesson. We laughed a lot and loved being shown the local area where she lives. Another brilliant day.
I also have to highly recommend the waterfall trek with Zul. It was a challenging climb, especially in the heat, but so rewarding. His knowledge of plants and wildlife was just so interesting and his eyes must be amazing to spot the milipedes and lizards that he introduced us to. But again his humour just made the day extra special. We had such a laugh. And to say the waterfall had the 'WOW' factor seems an understatement.
Overall we enjoyed ourselves immensely so thanks to all the team for making it such a memorable trip. We hope to see you all again in the future.
Tim and Kate. Xxx.

good old tanjong jara....this must have been my 5th visit.

i can't describe how charming this hotel is. In all honesty the service at the restaurants can be a bit hit and miss, ie at lunch my meal arriving 20minutes before my wife's or our meal taking forever at supper. However, it was Malaysian school holidays and we should have just timed it better. I still would expect better from a hotel of this calibre.

Don't get me wrong, I love this place. Here's why:

1) It's so laid back - the lawns are immaculate and the architecture very attractive in the traditional Malay style.
2) A fantastastic location right by a golden beach on the sea
3) 2 pools, one adults only, so kids and families can have fun by the main pool, and couples can have some romantic quiet time by the other.
4) The food is outstanding, some people have complained about the limitations of the main restaurant for supper/dinner - but what more do you need than chicken/beef/prawns cooked any way you want them plus rice/noodles/vegetables (and really tasty starters and puddings).

Here is why on top, this is my favourite hotel in the world
1) The spa is better than world class, Malay messages are simply the best in the world and Tanjong Jara has the best in an outstanding spa area.
2) Tenggol island where you can go snorkelling/diving (day trip) is perhaps the most stunning place I have ever been to. I thought you only got this sort of location in the south pacific - towering cliffs with lush green vegetation, wite powder sands, crystal clear turquoise water and coral reefs. The first time i came here i swam with a turtle. Apparently now bbq on the beach for lunch. Life doesnt get much better.

Tanjong Jara can be a bit slow at times, but thats one of the reasons why i love it. Go for it.

Room Tip: bandung villas great

We stayed for our honeymoon in a villa on the beach which was expensive but very, very nice. The adult pool area is great and it makes a real difference being able to get away from the families with small children when you are looking for some real relaxation. The grounds are beautiful, the spa was fantastic and staff were very helpful. We enjoyed a cookery class with Chef Ann which was great fun especially with the naughty monkeys trying to steal the ingredients at the start of the class. Breakfast was fab, with lots of choice and everything made freshly for you.

However the main restaurant is a bit hit and miss for dinner. On the evening I had booked in for my husbands birthday meal, they managed to firstly bring us the wrong meal, they then gave half of our meal to the table next to us. Despite us informing them of the issue a number of times rather than prioritising cooking our meal again we literally had to wait until everyone else had been served and then they cooked our order again. This meant that we had to wait for 4 hours for our main, not great on any evening but especially not when you are trying to celebrate a special night. They also ran out of the house wine early on in our stay with only the much more expensive bottles remaining which was annoying seeing as we both enjoy red wine and do not drink anything else. Therefore we were left with a choice of not enjoying any wine or of paying triple for the pleasure!

Another annoyance was when we booked in to see the fireflies. After rushing our meal and not having dessert etc, as the kitchen is not the fastest, so that we could be ready to leave on time from reception, we were told at 10 minutes past the allotted leaving time that another set of guests were still eating and so we and another couple would have to wait for them to finish. We knew that these guests had not arrived and sat down to eat until at least 30 minutes after us and so had clearly not been considering their fellow guests convenience and instead expected us to just wait for them. After waiting for 30 minutes, instead of informing the other guests that they would have to miss the trip on that evening, we were asked to continue waiting and after an hour we gave up and informed them that we would no longer be going. Bear in mind this is a night trip with a long drive there and back so it was incredibly selfish of those keeping everyone else waiting and should not have happened.

All in all it is a lovely place but is quite expensive and not necessarily the best value for money. We stayed at better places for other parts of our honeymoon and would probably not return in all honesty.
