“Nice hotel, but too far from KL sites”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2009

This hotel was arranged for us through Malaysian airlines via our travel agent. A group of us were flying Malaysian Air from New Zealand to Mumbai, India and the airline did not fly direct but instead had a 24 hr stopover in KL. Not having been to KL I was happy to have a full day to explore the main sites, however this hotel was in Shah Alam, a completely different city from KL!. Therefore it seeing KL for a day was not going to be as easy as we thought! The hotel were helpful, although I think it was more about good timing for us than what they routinely offer, they gave us a complimentary van ride into KL, however we had to find our own way home, which ended up being on a very hot and crowded a train, then a taxi to hotel! The hotel was very nice, the breakfast was average, the location to other shops/eating places in Shah Alam was good, but this is not a hotel to stay in if you are short on time and want to see KL. As much as this hotel was "all part of our airline package" for which we were grateful, I would have preferred to have been put up in a lower rated hotel that was in KL city itself.

I stayed at the Grand Bluewave for an international conference.

In most respects, it's unexceptional: entirely comfortable, well-run, nothing to complain about. There's nothing to rave about either.

The reception and lobby service was efficient and helpful. Always shining and clean and welcoming. The room, likewise, was neat and well-serviced each day. Conference facilities were also more than adequate.

Breakfast was a mixed affair: the main food was Malaysian in style, thought there were some western bread items on offer. One day, I spied some cereal, but that didn't seem on offer every day. The coffee there, and at the conference, was vile. A coffee shop on the other side of the lobby makes reasonably decent coffee.

The gym is a little disappointing: a few cardio machines, a shaky "multi-gym" and a few dumbells. The pool is a good place to cool off, but not somewhere you'd hang out for too long.

Shah Alam is quite a Muslim sort of place - don't expect to find beer in the hotel (there may have been some, but I didn't find it). A shopping centre two blocks away has various eating options, and a supermarket (which even sells some alcohol, if you need it!).

I'm not entirely sure why you'd stay at the Grand Bluewave if you didn't have business in the area: Shah Alam doesn't seem like much of a tourist area, and the journey into KL, though easy enough, takes a while.

  • Liked — Efficient for a conference venue
  • Disliked — No beer!
